The Pros And Cons Of Paying College Athletes

The thesis in this text is clear and noticeable, it is “One of the most controversial questions; Should college athletes be paid?”. It is the second sentence, it states in the beginning what the author will be talking about. The central argument of the essay was why college athletes should not be paid. The author provides support for his opinion by stating some of NCAA’s rules. The author told an anecdote about when he was a college athlete.

College Varsity Athletes Should be Paid In this paper, I argue that college varsity athletes should be paid for playing sports that bring in revenue. In particular, College football and basketball because they bring in the majority of the revenue for the schools. The revenue accomplished by college sports programs continues to increase, due to the growth in interest of the NCAA basketball tournament and the college football playoffs (Berry III, Page 270). Throughout the past few years, one of the main topics debated in college sports is whether or not the athletes should be paid.

The NCAA policies for insurance with student athletes is absurd. They let the colleges decide whether or not they want to pay for medical insurance. It doesn’t even cover everyone, only a select few sports. Thus, leaving the athletes and family confused. This shows that the NCAA, a “non-profit organization”, who makes millions off college players, refuses to pay for the students athletes hard work and sacrifice they put in.

Those who support the compensation of student athletes tout fairness, claiming that transitioning teams into essentially a business, where players would enter an employment agreement with universities and be paid a salary, would be more beneficial to the athletes. These supporters fail to realize that business is inherently unfair. Businesses set to maximize their profits and, in the process, cut programs that underperform and bolster their most productive ones. Would this case of colligate sports teams prove to be different?

College athletes put in a lot of time, effort, and work into the sport they’ve played since they were young, but they aren’t getting paid for it. These student athletes deserve to be paid because they put in countless hours of hard work and balance sports with school work. The first reason athletes in college do deserve to be compensated is because they don 't have time to fit in work with a school and athletic schedule. College athletes don’t have time to get a real job. Student athletes have a very busy schedule, they don’t have time to fit in a job.

One would think that given these unacceptable yet commonplace problems, the universities simply couldn 't afford to help their players obtain basic needs, right?

And most of them work hard in practice and play great in the game. Colleges should help their athletes by paying them. College athletes should be paid. Some athletes go to the pros before graduating college. Paying the athletes will make them work harder in practice and in school, because if they work harder in practice they will play harder and maybe get paid more.
