I foresee both, advantages and disadvantages, about arming school staff members. I believe that this could be part of a solution for some smaller and rural school that cannot afford armed security or have limited access to law enforcement. I also believe that something is better than nothing because the sooner we can stop this event, the less citizens that are harmed. Law enforcement has focused heavily on advance training and preparing for these attacks since the Columbine incident in 1999. Over the past 19 years law enforcement continues to evaluate the tactics and mindset of the active shooters. Due to the active shooters evolving tactics, law enforcement has responded by changing their own tactics and training to prevent or at least improve …show more content…
I am sure that you already know that there is no profile for a school shooter, but there are things which everyone should be educated on. Educating and providing mental health intervention to those that might become a potential school shooter is where we should start. The Secret Service identifies 10 key finding in their “Safe School Initiative” study that might be useful in identifying a person who might be planning or thinking about an attack: 1. These attacks are seldom an impulsive acts 2. In most occasion, someone else knew about the shooters plan to attack 3. The attacker did not make threats their targets prior to the attack 4. There is no good profile for a school shooter suspect 5. Most of the time the shooter does something before the incident to cause other to be concerned or indicate that they need help 6. The attackers do not handle or cope with major losses or personal failure well and many are suicidal 7. Many of the school shooter feel bullied, persecuted, or hurt by others 8. There are other people involved in the attack in many case 9. The shooter is stopped by someone other than law enforcement in most
On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold left the world in a state of shock when they embarked on one of the most perilous school shootings in American history. The Columbine High School shooting left thirteen dead and a total of twenty-two injured. After this massacre took place, many wondered what triggered these boys to attack their own school, and if there was any way it could have been prevented. The novel “Columbine” by Dave Cullen illustrates why this may not have been possible. The attack on Columbine High School was inevitable because of the deranged behaviors of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold.
“Investigations of school shooters have often found that two characteristics emerge: peer rejection and social rejection (p.311)”. Typically school shooters are students who have been bullied, picked on and marginalized. The majority of schools shooters lack social and coping skill and are picked on by their peers. As a group, school shooters lack social support and prosocial relationships. Some school shooters show a history of cruelty to animals while others display affection, attachment and empathy toward animals.
Teachers can protect students, other staff members, and themselves rather than being unable to do anything 4. Teacher armament is less expensive than hiring trained professionals 5. Teacher armament will decrease incidents of school shootings, and set a declining trend for any violent crimes happening on school
A simple way to stop school shootings in our district would be by eliminating all the factors that form a school shooter. Most school shooter suffered from bullying or had some sort of mental illness. In order to minimize the chance of a kid becoming a school shooter, we need to increase awareness.
Since the year 2000 there has been 176 schools shooting incident in the U.S where one or more person resulted injured or dead. Should we really trust our lives to signs that say, “No guns allowed” or the two or three security officers that have to cover the whole campus? In 1994 the Federal Gun Free School Zone Act was introduced in attempt to stop gun violence in school, this law was introduced by the Clinton administration and it basically prohibits students and
I believe the biggest misconception I had about school shooters is their feelings, or what I assumed is a lack of. What I have learned about the feelings of school shooters is that there is typically a guiding factor or initial issue that festers in someone. Said issue causes this person or group of people to act out. From what I have observed, these students typically have the brightest futures yet remain the most misunderstood of all students. Most of these students who carry out shootings killing themselves in the end, giving them a lifetime worth of attention they were clearly seeking without any repercussions for their actions.
Violent criminals know that currently schools are gun free zones, and can use this factor to their advantage. Rather than falling victim to an attack on the school; teachers could protect themselves and their students. Students could feel much safer if their teacher was armed. Students would feel more safe if they knew they could be protected from an attack from an intruder or another student. Criminals know that teachers currently are not armed and could potentially see schools as a target.
Over the past few weeks, arming teachers has been a controversial topic throughout the country. School shootings have taken the lives of many over the past few years, yet they are becoming more and more frequent. In today’s society children shouldn’t have to go to school worried if they are going to be safe that day. If teachers are armed it will add that extra bit of protection to the children. A big question is if arming teachers is even going to matter if an active shooter happens to be in that school.
In the past two year, there has been 161 school or attempted school shootings which averages to nearly one every week. () It seems like every day there is a new article or story on another school shooting and because it is becoming such common news it seems just as if it was another static.(is this a run on?) Shootings are becoming more relevant in our everyday live than ever before and the government is taking no action on changing loose gun control laws in the United States. Now the schools and states are taking matters into their own hands by designing and adopting new programs to increase survival in case of a shooter. Schools are teaching young children to high school how to defend against a shooter and it is not a viable method of dealing with school shootings.
Someone bursts through the school, into the cafeteria, the library, an auditorium, or even in a classroom. Every day the threat looms over us. Haunting us with its increasing numbers. We live in fear of a school shooter. And I will not stand for it.
Teachers Carrying Guns By:Mark Roessner So far there have been shootings across the US in schools. To address the problem, President Trump has come out with a few ideas and suggestions that will hopefully preserve children safety at schools. Those ideas are not without their critics, pros and cons. Trump listened to a couple victims and parents of victims tell their mournful story and came out with a suggestion.
Equipping teachers with guns, who are little more than civilians, is absurd. This would not help prevent the type of deadly mass shooting we 've been seeing lately. All that would do is increase the possibility of innocent people getting caught in the crossfire. Instead of training for how to use guns teachers should be taught self defense and how to use items around them as weapons. It would also help if every teacher learned self defense and not just a
These terrible people make us all question what can be done to better protect the students and teachers that fill our nation 's schools. We need to make schools safer by, implementing more violence prevention, more school resource officers, and more metal detectors. Often times after a school shooting occurs, it is common to hear about the warnings signs that went unnoticed until after the tragic event had occurred. Since we have missed the signs, time and time again, we need to train one another to be more aware of what is going around us.
Most of the suspects of mass shootings are young males who usually commit the crime on their own with careful planning of the event. Most perpetrators have a fascination with weapons and the shootings usually occur in broad daylight in public places (Frances). There is an obvious difference in the brain of mass shooters to those of non-mass shooters. Low orbital cortex activity may be the main difference between the two groups of people. About 1 in 100 people are psychopaths, there was a study that was done at UC Irvine by James Fallon where he used a PET scan to measure brain activity.
Should children be taught gun safety? An instructor at an Arizona shooting range was teaching a nine year old how to shoot a fully automatic uzi and the kid lost control of the gun and accidently shot the instructor. Gun accidents like this shouldn’t happen. First, a nine year old kid should not start learning how to shoot a gun of that caliber. Once the trigger is pulled with that type of gun, the gun shoots a lot of rounds a second and it is hard to control.
