Aspartame: Deadly to Us, Profitable to Them` Aspartame is one of the greatest accidental discoveries in the scientific world, or is it? Aspartame is an insidious thing. Many people are unclear to what it is, it helps large corporations since it is substantial substitute for sugar, and it also destroys the human body from the inside.
People around the globe are uneducated as to what aspartame is. Aspartame is an FDA approved replacement for sugar. It was accidentally discovered in 1965 by James M. Schlatter, a chemist working for G.D. Searle & Company. Aspartame was first used in a carbonated beverage in 1983 and in 1996 became a general table-top sweetener, replacing sugar in both categories. The FDA had approved its use in 1981 and made

Aspartame is the only suitable replacement for sugar (that has so far been discovered). Being 200 times sweeter than normal sugar, many corporations have concluded that aspartame is better to use since consumers won’t use as much of it. Although aspartame is very expensive at $85 per pound, whereas raw sugar is about $30 per pound, paying the extra $55 has proven to be cost-efficient. Soft drinks gain more and more popularity every year. Soft drink sales increase at an annual rate of 2% and diet soda’s increase at a rate of 11% annually. Aspartame is used by many soft drink companies, including Borden Inc., General Foods, H. J. Heinz, Quaker Oats and Coca-Cola. Aspartame has sent profits through the roof. Since these companies can market their products as “low-calorie”, the increase of sales has gone up 20% annually since 1985. That’s an increase of over 660% to this day. Also, aspartame does not require a health warning, so if the consumer is unaware, then the corporation can make more money. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), aspartame has been deemed safe, although studies have shown otherwise. The fact that these multi-million dollar corporations are using aspartame is just taking advantage of the consumer. People obviously don’t want to hear the truth, but they should be forced to listen. We need to rise up and take control by educating ourselves on the subject of aspartame and stop letting these corporate puppeteers control
. That it was cleared by the F.D.A in 1974 and then put it on hold in 1981, 1983. He stated that if you drink diet cokes such as: Diet coke, coke zero, and Dr. Pepper Zero you ingest 32 times the amount that the FDA recommends. And that there is Aspartame in Soft Drinks, Yoghurt, Chewing Gum, Cooking Sauce, Crisps, Tabletop Sweeteners, and drink powders. Ben delivered his speech confidently and clearly a little better than Ethan did, because he was able to make me see his stand on the topic.
. . . In this issue of the JCI [Journal of Clinical Investigation], Stanhope and colleagues demonstrate that consumption of fructose-sweetened but not glucose-sweetened beverages for 10 weeks increases de novo lipid synthesis, promotes dyslipidemia, impairs insulin sensitivity, and increases visceral adiposity in overweight or obese adults” (Abstract). Fructose sweetener is another way to say high fructose corn syrup. This study proved that fructose sweetened drinks caused harm to the body and signaled a starting point for diseases such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, insulin difficulties, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and ultimately coronary heart disease. Not only does high fructose cause stress on the body, but fructose can also cause serious
When the 1970s introduced High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), a cheap sweetener alternative to sucrose in a fructose-glucose liquid form (fifty five percent fructose, forty two percent glucose, and three percent saccharides), it brought extensive numbers of health problems with it (Bray, 2004 & Johnson, 2010 ). Prior to the 70’s, on average, sugar contributed to four percent of daily caloric intake, however over the past four and a half decades, this statistic has increased to whopping sixteen percent, leading some scientist to consider it an “addiction” as they observe the sugar substitute wreak havoc on humans’ bodies worldwide (Butler, 2011). Along with hooking those who indulge sweets to it, High Fructose Corn Syrup also leads to obesity:
First, Too much sugar can cause serious damage health probs, for example, there’s a chance of obesity, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes. and tooth decay. Like so, Robert Lustig pediatrician in CA, “sugar sweetened drinks are the biggest source of added sugar in the american diet”. Which means there is TOO much sugar in a “America
The article, Is Sugar Toxic?, by Gary Taubes is about how sugar may be the reason why we are all unhealthy and how sugar is not good for the body. This article is similar to the book, Year Of No Sugar, because in the book Eve, the author, talks about Lustig who was someone that she listened to on youtube and the article mentions him. Mr. Lustig states, “It’s not all about the calories”(Taubes), which in Eve’s memoir she says that it is also the sugar that is making us fat. The article exclaims that health effects about sugar go back longer than one may think. Taubes says that high fructose corn syrup has been replacing regular added sugar in soft drinks and other products because refined sugar, “had the reputation as a generally noxious
_Riley Trahan __ “Sugar” CWT 2/9/23 Sugar has been around since about 500 B.C, however, there is a history behind it. sugar changed the world by marc Aronson and marina Budhos is about the discovery of sugar and its contribution in ending slavery. The authors’ purpose for writing sugar changed the world was to inform how the discovery of sugar and its contribution in ending slavery changed the world. It is believed that many of the soft drink companies are the main reason for the rise of obesity in America. As stated in the article Coca-Cola and the fight against the global obesity epidemic, “The soft drink industry as a whole, and Coke in particular, has received harsh criticism for contributing to the global obesity epidemic. ”(Gertner 15).This suggests that as soft drinks and other processed foods are becoming more popular it is heavily contributing to the recent rise in people becoming overweight. Before fast food and soft drinks were popular, less people were obese which leads to the speculation that it is a cause for the problem. On the other hand there are studies that reveal that dietary factors don’t always affect a person’s weight.
Nevertheless, there could be people that follow the beverage industries inaccurate findings and believe there is no connection. Therefore, the industry needs to stop covering up the truth and allow the population to choose if they want to drink sweetened
Sugar in America Many people have a sweet tooth, and historically, people have craved sweet foods. Before sugarcane, the only sweetening product was honey. It was not until the early 1600s that sugar made its way to the US. We were a new country, and the United States did not have much knowledge of it compared to other countries.
Fructose is found in a lot of foods and goods such as breads, sauces, cereals, breakfast bars, fruits and vegetables. Why is fructose used so widely instead of a natural ingredient? Fructose is a very sweet sweetener based off and made from corn syrup. Fructose is added to a lot of foods because it’s very cheap. Even though fructose is not very good for the body a lot is still added to foods.
Although marketed as the ‘diet aid’, aspartame has chemical nature. It defeats its purpose of facilitating weight reduction. In fact, it instills the craving for the calorie rich diet. The result is eating more food. The aspartame free gum will not alter the chemical levels in the
People with diabetes cannot use normal natural sugars and have to use sugar substitutes, artificial sweeteners. Aspartame concerned me the most among many other artificial sweeteners in terms of its complexity and danger it imposes on people, who know no alternative for it. It is considered one of the most dangerous for health, and is even banned in some countries like Japan (Arizona Center Of Advanced Medicine). Having seen my grandmother struggle from diabetes and having learnt about the artificial sweeteners from my family members, who come from the medical field, my interest in this area was established early on.
Also sugary drinks are contributing 25,000 deaths in the U.S every year. That's crazy right!! Candy used to be very rare in America until Oliver Chase invented a machine that changed American's lives in a big way. Basically American's ideas about sweets has drastically changed in the past 100 years. Candy used to be an expensive luxury and thought to be nutritious for health, but today it is consumed more then ever.
I have selected to discuss Sucralose ( Splenda). I will provide evidence to support Sucraloses toxicological safety for consumer use. I am submitting the following evidence to support my position: The director of communications of Tate & Lyle PLC makes a statement on those opposing the safety of Sucralose “Sucralose is a chlorinated carbohydrate. Yes, if is made with chlorine; but, no, it is not a chlorinated hydrocarbon like DDT, as critics often suggest. It is a chemical fact that not all compounds containing chlorine are identical.
Summary Low calorie sweeteners when approved are approved post rigorous assessment by the regulatory bodies. The regulatory bodies are painstakingly scrutinising the evidence from all scientific studies and keep themselves updated with the relevant new studies when published. In this way, the approved sweeteners can be guaranteed to be safe within the limits established by the organizations. Therefore, low calorie sweeteners are a valuable and a safe tool for providing consumers the opportunity to choose foods without compromising on the sensorial benefits of the same.
