What Path Will You Take? You have different paths you can take in life, for highschool, for sports, for college, for classes, even for the friends you can make or have. But, sometimes you want something to happen before it will happen. In sports, if you want to win that much, sometimes people cheat the game, or people may cheat on tests, or just try to get ahead. But, if you do that your life may not end up the way you want it to be. The short story “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs explains the White family ends up with a magical monkey’s paw and interferes with fate. Another example of this is in the article, “What Do You Wish For” by Kristin Lewis and Adee Braun which explains how to work toward your goals that you wished came easier to …show more content…
We as humans control our own destiny by the choices we make. One reason humans choose their own destinies is by making choices in life that can lead to an end result. Humans choose their own destiny, by choosing the paths they want to follow. This idea is shown throughout the short story “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs on pages 20-21 which explains how Sergeant Major Morris wants to “wash his hand” of the Monkey’s Paw and he wants to get rid of it. Mr. White takes the paw from Morris and explains how if Morris doesn’t want it he should give it to him, yet again Morris doesn’t agree but gives it to Mr. White. Mr. White asks how to make a wish and Morris explains it to him, at the time he doesn’t make a wish. When Morris leaves the White’s son Herbert tells his father he will be happier if the house was paid off, so Mr. White wishes for 200 pounds. This clearly shows that Mr. White chose to take the paw from Sergeant Major Morris and used it. Another example of this is in the article “What Do You Wish For?” on page 24 which …show more content…
One example of this is in the short story “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs on pages 22-23 which explains, Mrs. White wants Mr. White to use their second wish and wish their boy alive again. Mr. White knows it's a bad idea and tries to fight it. When he wished for Herbert to come back he came back, but what we thought was friendly, kind little Herbert was not. This ghost of Herbert was banging on the door very loudly, and Mr. White knew it was going to happen. He was searching for the Monkey’s Paw and finally found it and wished for it to go away. In the end of the story Mr. and Mrs. White still had a dead son and unhappiness. This shows that Mr. and Mrs. White were very greedy with what they wanted and ended up losing someone they loved. Another example of this is in the article “What Do You Wish For?” by Kristin Lewis and Adee Braun on page 25 which states, “If you don’t reach your goal, don’t sweat it. “It’s not a matter of succeeding or failing,” Desautels says. Remember, if you fail today, you can always try again tomorrow. In the words of Thomas Edison, who invented the incandescent lightbulb after many years of trying and failing: “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” This shows that sometimes the consequence to your action is failing. Even though that is very tough for
Destinys and Decisions “You are always only one decision away from a totally different life”(Unknown). Your destiny can be such a fragile thing, you slide between the path of success and the path of failure daily with the decisions you make. Often when you make a bad decision you are give a second chance. And these decisions and chances all lead up to your destiny.
“I did have some idea of selling it, but I don’t think I will. It has caused enough mischief already.” This was the perfect time for Sergeant Major Morris to enlarge on how the paw makes life miserable but he only expressed this vaguely and without emphasis. The family wasn’t aware of the mischief mentioned because they were so thrilled, but if Sergeant Major Morris talked the things that happened – especially to him – more, it could consequently deter the them from being so eager to wish. This shows how Sergeant Major Morris wasn’t as determined to prevent the family from yearning to
I personally believe that we have control of how are destiny will work for us. We can do the right things in life, or do the not so good things that sabotage the way our destiny is suppose to work out for us. In The Sports Gene, by David Epstein, Donald Thomas was led to his destiny by a bet from a current track member who did high jump. He then found out that he was naturally good at high jump, because of his giant achilles tendon. But in Macbeth, by Shakespeare, Macbeth sabotaged the way he was going to become king of Scotland.
“And suddenly the knocking ceased” -Page 9 nobody knows exactly what Mr. White wished for, but we think we knew what he made a wish for. In conclusion, the monkey's paw by WW Jacobs proves that greedy can take over your mind. By the end of the night the Whites accepted their fate and learned their actions were wrong. As soon as the Whites knew they had the possibility to be greedy they took their chances and they wished for money and once her son was taken from them, they realized what they did and they couldn't fix it. The Whites learned greed was a very evil sin.
In the short story The Monkey's Paw, the outcome in the wishes that were made by Mr. and Mrs. White did not turn out the way that they wanted to them to. They had been warned by Sergeant- Major that they needed to be carefull with the wishes they make. The story portrays that it is important to be content with what we have. Just because we think we need or want something, we might have to consider what we need to do or what may happen in order to make it possible.
#1 about “The Monkey's Paw” The cause is that Morris said If you keep it, don't blame me for what happens. Sargent-Major Morris was the when Mr. White the paw, that night he gave it to him because he wanted it for it's power, Morris told Mr. White that the last wish will be evil. The fear in the charters words what they say it is like they
Furthermore, when asked if his wishes came true, he replied, “I did”. ( 9). This started all sorts of ideas and possibilities in the Whites’ minds, thinking of how with the paw they can get all they ever wanted. Knowing what happens to the family later in the story, if we think about it, if Sergeant-Major Morris had never told the story behind the paw or that it worked they would have never wanted it. In short, if Sergeant-Major Morris
This paragraph is going to about the differences of the stories, “The Monkey’s Paw”, and “The Third Wish.”. So the differences of the moods are “The Monkey’s Paw.” is horror. The “The Third Wish” was happy
The experience with paw adds doubt to anything else to knock at their doorstep. Point 3: But the Whites explained their displeasure for the paw after experiencing the consequences. Explain: Placing blame on this foreign object, rather than taking responsibility for the selfishness the paw granted.
and after someone makes a wish. Telling the White family not to hold him responsible for what happens and saying it would be sensible to get rid of the paw. Jacobs uses
With Morris’s face whitening, it tacitly tells the audience that something terrifying happened when Morris made his wishes. This foreshadows that something dreadful will happen once the Whites make their wishes. Question 2: Compare Mr. White’s feelings about the monkey’s paw when he makes the first wish, second wish, and third wish. How does his attitude change?
Mr.White is selfish with his wishes and is inconsiderate for what others might want. Mr.White uses his first wish to ask for 200 pounds to pay off the rest of his house mortgage, which is only beneficial for him. Although the stories consist mostly of differences, there are also a few similarities. In both stories the characters get 3 wishes from personified objects.
The outcome of her hopes and wishes resulted in her life. Therefore, a message or theme can be drawn for both of the passages. The theme that I got from two stories is that not everything is what it looks like or portrays to
At the beginning of the story, Mr. White approaches the game of chess with carelessness by putting his king into the open revealing that Mr. White does things carelessly and doesn’t think them out. “putting his king into such sharp and unnecessary perils” When he learnt about the monkey paw he acts without thinking of the consequences. He immediately thinks greedily even though he has everything he wants. If Mr. White never acted the way then they would have never messed with fate and learned this lesson which creates the theme of don’t mess with fate. Setting contributes to theme also.
In all conclusion, the Monkey 's Paw shows the theme that you should never mess with fate. Even if you need more because you never know what you
