“Ferguson Effect Is Real and Hurts Minorities” An anonymous (2016) author of the Wall Street Journal wrote an article about something called the Ferguson effect. The Ferguson effect is officers backing off proactive policing in minority neighborhoods, and the resulting increase in violent crime. Then the author goes to say this “effect is exclusively in black communities. Where the Black Lives Matter narrative about racist, homicidal cops has produced virulent hostility.” Then the author goes to give numbers and statics on how much the deaths have rose in cities like Houston, and Philadelphia. Then a Mr. Stringham dismisses the argument. Then he goes to give his own numbers and statics on the situation. Mr. Stringham concludes by saying “his …show more content…
According to the author Hillary Clinton made an attempt to portray Donald Trump as a racist. Only days after the riots in Milwaukee. Trump said that many people was negatively affected during the riots. Trump said " The victims, as in other cities with rising crime, were overwhelmingly black. Mr. Trump also said: "Our job is to make life more comfortable for the African-American parent who wants their kids to be able to safely walk the streets and walk to school. Or the senior citizen waiting for a bus. Or the young child walking home from school." Mr. Trump says he going to make these communities safe again." Co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement Alicia Garza believes that it is a terrifying vision that Mr. Trump is trying so hard to put him alongside some of the worst fascists in history,”. The executive director of the Advancement Project, Judith Browne Dianis, has been a huge complainer of Trump speech. Judith goes on the record says his thoughts and speech tries to segregate the minority communities. Political commentator Sally Kohn post an article in The New York Times that said Trump has reused the thoughts and ideas of a “White America” a former President (Richard Nixon) used to get …show more content…
Author Lichblau said the NRA has long ago turned down the idea of tighter laws will help America. The NRA has showed a large group of evidence from different backgrounds that have supported the link between gun restrictions and Lessing number of gun violence. Eric Lichblau then goes to say that this presidential election plays a huge role for the near future of the NRA. The author says the NRA has spent more than 20 million on campaigning support for Donald Trump. Mr. Trump goes on record voicing his support on gun rights. Oppose to Hilary Clinton who believes in Mr. Webster studies at John Hopkins which lead to the conclusion of gun homicides. The data from past and present still does not convince the NRA. Eric Lichblau conclude his article by saying that the NRA spend millions a year on ads, and other things trying to keep gun laws the way they are
The author’s methodology first includes a discussion of the issue at hand leading to a synopsis of why this problem even originated. Additionally, the author presents information on how other people in the field perceive the issue and who is to “blame” through the use of quotes. For example, Mark Rosenberg, the founder of the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control argues that it was the leadership of the CDC who prevented further research on gun violence. On the other hand, another primary speaker, current Injury Center Director Debra Houry has been thought to have defended the agency’s decision by saying it still partakes in data collection of firearm research. After discussing the CDC and the need for it to address an issue like this, the NRA’s influence on the organization is explained.
“The lobbying arm of the NRA” was established as members believed that, in order to protect their right to bear arms, they had to directly impact decision-making in Washington (NRA-ILA n.d.). Due to the contemporary debate of whether the number of gun regulations should increase, the Institute has retained the media’s spotlight since 2008 because of their prominent public influence, especially during the former presidency of Barack
Trace L. Meares(2015) is the one who claims that the increase in crime is because of the “Ferguson effect”, and that long term data most likely will show a decline in crime. She uses a visual chart showing the shootings in NYC since 2004. She says that there has been frequent raises and declines in crime, and this particular raise is not because of the police backing off because of criticism. I found it really persuasive after seeing the visual to support her argument. James Alan Fox uses statistics to support his argument and says, “Reported jumps in crime in some cities reflect only a few months, a statistically unreliable indicator of a trend.”
The article, "America's Unique Gun Violence Problem," by Michel Martin considers that though there is more support for gun control in America, "the NRA's power comes from a lot of single issue pro-gun voters because they're very intense…" (Martin). This intensity is a major reason for the lack of success against anti-gun control parties such as the NRA being that most constituents of the NRA are very active in the voting and political process. Thus, when it comes down to it laws are being passed in the NRA's favor usually because at the voting stand NRA support is much higher than those advocating for gun control laws. In order to see a change, support for gun control has not increased, but rather its supporters have been more active in the voting process and at the political
If Richard Wright were writing an autobiography about the life of a black boy, today in 2017, he would write about the brutality police violently perform on African Americans. In the article, “Appeals for Peace in Ohio After Two Days of Protesting”, written by Francis X. Clines, he states that after two days of irregular protests, the unfortunate shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white policeman occurred. City Councilwoman Alicia Reece uses her surveying of the 66 arrests and the damage to city stores as evidence to prove the terrifying tension between white policemen and African Americans, who have complained about the racial profiling of white police officers (Francis X. Clines 2001). Many Americans have dealt with the issue of police brutality, although a majority of them are African American. Two civil rights groups collaborated to file a racial profiling suit in a Cleveland federal court against Cincinnati.
The point of view of the NRA in this campaign is that “The only thing stopping a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” (Wayne LaPierre, 2012, Washington DC speech) which is exactly what this campaign is trying to enforce. They follow the ideology of conservative libertarianism as they are looking for change in community and government action to bring in new laws and change current policies to protect children, also showing their value of children 's
Racial issues are sometimes dismissed as history; they are thought of as issues of the past. People sometimes believe that since the government preaches equality, that most racial issues are resolved. This is not the case in today’s society, as racial issues are still prevalent in everyday life. Not only facing discriminatory practices in the job market, minorities face racism in many different aspects of everyday life. In the world we live in today, people tend to judge a whole group of people based on the actions of only a few.
And I can see from the outside in, driven by the old voices of childhood and lost in anger and fear.” This quote explains how a child could be effected with racist comments. Although it happened when she was a child, the racist comments came back to her because that’s what she believes she was. This ties in with Americans having equal opportunities because it shows how one could be affected by racism. If the American government was to restrict every race
Giuliani, who said her performance was an attack on the police officers who protect her every day. Like many, he feels that because she is someone of standing and fame, she is heavily dependent on the police to keep her safe and therefore should not be turning her back on them. The “Black Lives Matter” campaign rides heavily on the issues of police brutality and the shooting of harmless African American people just because of the color of their skin. Much of their fight is to defeat racist ideals within law enforcement and
NRA has supported laws since 1934 such as the National Firearms Act, Federal Firearms Act, Gun Control Act, Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, and Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act. I personally support the NRA because they make sure that my right to bear arms in the constitution are protected. I carry everywhere I go because you never know what some idiot is thinking about doing and I feel the need to protect my family no matter what it takes. Observers and lawmakers see the NRA as one of the top three most influential lobbying groups in Washington, DC. After 1977, the organization expanded its membership by focusing heavily on political issues and forming coalitions with conservative politicians, most of them being
The PBS program “Gunned Down: The power of the NRA” highlighted how the NRA continues it’s stranglehold on the government and gun policies. It is quite clear that gun control advocates attempt to play off the emotion of citizens whereas pro gun advocates fear the public into believing the government is attempting to steal their guns and liberties. The side of the gun control advocates can be seen through the likes of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. Conversely, the pro gun effort is shown through Ringleader Wayne LaPierre who continues to save the NRA and second amendment rights. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were both portrayed as compassionate, caring individuals that were fighting for a life or
Ferguson asserts that when blacks are seen anywhere, for example television, the radio, or even plain out in the streets they have “come to signify danger and a threat to personal safety”. The other
The fight for gun control has been a never-ending battle in recent years amongst the Republican and Democratic Party. How the media portrays gun control has a lot to do with how people view guns and the gun laws at hand; for example, CNN and Fox news are best known for having completely different views and reporting styles. In a CNN article titled “NRA chief accuses Democrats of pushing ‘socialist’ agenda in the wake of the Florida shooting” written by Lauren Fox it discusses the tension between the NRA and Democrats when it comes to gun control. (Fox, 2018)
An occurrence observed by the population of Los Angeles, California conveys the existence of racism and police brutality. According to The Polls-Trends: Racial Differences in Attitudes Toward the Police, “…three quarters of blacks, but only 38 percent of whites, continued to view police brutality as a common occurrence” (Tuch and Weitzer
Everyday in the United States, ninety families are changed forever; guns claim an average of ninety lives every day in the United States, 33,000 lives in a single year. Gun control has been a debate in the United States for many years and is constantly thrusted back into the public’s attention by horrific shootings. These shootings constantly cause individuals to petition the government to place stricter and stricter regulations of guns. However, these policies cannot be the solution to this problem. To determine a solution that will be both effective and constitutional, we must look at statistics and research that has been conducted to determine the best course of action.
