Gun control has been a heated debate for several decades, recently, the discussion surrounding this matter has intensified. The argument seems to be divided into liberal and conservative views, thoughts, and values. A majority of liberals desire stricter gun laws, required mental health check-ups, and longer waiting periods when it comes to purchasing a gun. However, the general census among the Republicans is less governmental interference because they feel that there is already too much governmental control involved. The Republican Party often does not want stricter gun laws because the problem at hand is not the gun itself, but the individual wielding the gun. The fight for gun control has been a never-ending battle in recent years amongst the Republican and Democratic Party. How the media portrays gun control has a lot to do with how people view guns and the gun laws at hand; for example, CNN and Fox news are best known for having completely different views and reporting styles. In a CNN article titled “NRA chief accuses Democrats of pushing ‘socialist’ agenda in the wake of the Florida shooting” written by Lauren Fox it discusses the tension between the NRA and Democrats when it comes to gun control. (Fox, 2018) The NRA accused Democrats of trying to take away guns from gun owners after a speech that was delivered only a week after the Florida shooting. Wayne LaPierre, the CEO of the NRA did not make any attempt to retract his accusations after he got into a heated
“The lobbying arm of the NRA” was established as members believed that, in order to protect their right to bear arms, they had to directly impact decision-making in Washington (NRA-ILA n.d.). Due to the contemporary debate of whether the number of gun regulations should increase, the Institute has retained the media’s spotlight since 2008 because of their prominent public influence, especially during the former presidency of Barack
Proponents of more gun control laws believe that the Second Amendment was intended exclusively for militias, that gun restrictions have always existed, and that gun regulations would prevent criminals from possessing firearms. However, Opponents claim that the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to own guns, that guns are needed for self-defense, and that gun ownership helps to dissuade crime. Because of this obvious difference, proponents of stricter firearm regulation demand more laws to help prevent mass shooting, and want reform in the area of background checks. Meanwhile, opponents of gun laws often accuse the proponents of manipulating a mass tragedy in order to further strengthen their fight. Gun ownership has been a tradition within the united states since before the country itself was formed.
Pro gun-control activists argue this as they are of the point of view that gun access is too easy and that this access is causing danger in society; they clearly value safety, particularly for human life. They follow the ideology of socialism because they want social order and for everyone to be able to access the same things, including a limited access to guns. Socialism is about control and pro-gun control advocates are all about control, specifically of the distribution and legality of guns. Pro-gun control advocates often believe the the NRA are the cause of most gun related incidents; there is even a website that is attempting to stop the NRA. This website ‘Stop The NRA’ use the campaign line “join StopTheNRA.com and the millions of Americans
The murder rate for adults over the age of twenty-five has decreased in part because American homes are now better armed compared to two decades ago. ”It has become a bipartisan article of faith that more handguns cause more violence. Such was the unequivocal conclusion of the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence in 1969, and such is now the editorial opinion of virtually every influential newspaper and magazine, from The Washington Post to The Economist to the Chicago Tribune” (Polsby). Polsby takes a logical approach with the use of pathos on how gun control laws are hurting us more than they are helping
But the system has major holes in it, among them incomplete listings of criminal cases. Perhaps the biggest hole is that small-scale sellers...are not required to do background checks”(PÉrez-peÑa 2015). For years, Democrats have fought for stricter gun control on firearms. After more than 60,000 gun violence incidents in 2017(gunviolencearchive 2017) and already almost 10,000 incidents in 2018(gunviolencearchive 2018), Democrats have only raised their fight for stricter background checks, a stronger focus on mental health, and have even been looking to ban semi-automatic assault rifles from the everyday human being. Even with the recent mass shootings, Republicans have stuck to their claim that every American has the right to own and carry a firearm.
The PBS program “Gunned Down: The power of the NRA” highlighted how the NRA continues it’s stranglehold on the government and gun policies. It is quite clear that gun control advocates attempt to play off the emotion of citizens whereas pro gun advocates fear the public into believing the government is attempting to steal their guns and liberties. The side of the gun control advocates can be seen through the likes of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. Conversely, the pro gun effort is shown through Ringleader Wayne LaPierre who continues to save the NRA and second amendment rights. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were both portrayed as compassionate, caring individuals that were fighting for a life or
(Enten). This demonstrates that the congress is unsure on what to do about gun policys because of the different thoughts and opionons of the citzens on the policys. To add on, the gun rights advicates are more passionate. An example from the text, “Gun owners are 9 points (21% to 12%) more likely to have contacted public officials about gun policy than those who don 't own guns. Americans who favor loosening gun laws have been 7 points (22% to 15%) more likely to contact public officials than those who favor stricter gun laws.”
While Novak does not necessarily appear to support any side of the gun control argument, he does imply that Republicans have largely derailed efforts to enforce the law regarding gun violence cases. The writer’s main purpose for writing the article is to show that there is a different way of looking at the gun control debate and to also show the wrongs, in his opinion, that are committed by the interested parties in this debate. Novak takes the risk of appearing subjective in his article which can make him appear less professional. As a journalist, he is supposed to appear
One of the most controversial issues our nation faces today is gun control laws. This controversy has been created due to the different interpretations of the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution which states the right of citizens to bear arms; “a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” (Cornell Law School). Anti-gun control laws believe that the amendment guarantees the right to bear any kind of firearms. On the other hand, we have does that believe that more controls laws should be implemented since the 2nd amendment was for the right of States to have an armed militia during wartime. Both sides have strong point, however, the safety of our children comes first, and a firearm means death in the wrong hands.
26 Oct. 2015. This article talks about the supporters and non-supporters of gun control and what all of it could lead too. It talks about our Second Amendment rights and how the Democrats as well as The Republicans wanted to make it harder for the mentally ill to get firearms in their hands. They would increase the funding for the prosecutions and they would even get more strict on the control of gun trafficking. This article also states that The Democrats were very quick to blame The Republicans for the broken gun laws.
Gun Control Gun control has become a polarizing and controversial issue around the globe. Therefore, they are always ready to scoff at anyone trying to control gun ownership.
In today’s society, one of the most alienating issues in American politics is gun control. More specifically, the issue is whether or not guns should be banned in the United States. Some people would say that guns should be banned because it would reduce crime as a whole and keep citizens safer. These people, enthusiasts of stricter gun laws, fear being safe in their country where there are so many people who have access to guns. Opponents of this argument, however, also fear losing safety.
