The Battle Of Trenton: One Of The American Revolution

The Battle of Saratoga known as a battle that was fought over two battles totaling eighteen days apart in the fall of 1777. The Battle of Saratoga would be considered as another turning point in the American Revolution. On September 19, 1777, British General John Burgoyne pulled off a small, but high-priced victory over American Colonial army led by General Horatio Gates and General Benedict Arnold. Though his troop strength had been weakened, General Burgoyne again attacked the Americans at Bemis Heights on October 7, 1777, but this time his forces were defeated and compelled to retreat. General Cornwallis was a general for the colonies but eventually turned sides after falling in love with a loyalist. He then was a loyalist now becoming a general for Britain. General Washington had just won the battle of Trenton with the continental army and needed to resupply after defeating the hessians from Britain on December 25 1776. Cornwallis heard of the victory and went to Trenton with is 8,000 redcoats to overwhelm General Washington 's 5,000 militia men.

Therefore, the british could’ve attacked from just about any location they wanted to. Later in the war, the Hessians were quickly shot, most wounded or killed. In total of all of the Hessians, 22 were killed, 92 were wounded, 918 captured, and 400 of the Hessians found a way to escape the war. On all top the that, 2 American were somehow frozen to death and 5 were wounded. After this big battle in Trenton, The American Colonists took away prisoners, and supplies but withdrew from the Next war which was the Battle of Princeton.

Not only did he care about his soldiers at valley forge but many other times he had too. For example, “On a Christmas night, in a blizzard,he lead his men across the ice-flecked Delaware river to Trenton,NJ, surprise a drunken hessian garrison and seizes Trenton at the time…etc.” (the document “Timeline of George Washington) The battle of Trenton was a very good to successful battle that George Washington and his soldiers had. Not only did they win this battle but he showed that he really cared about his men.

The reason for this is General George Washington decided that on December 25, 1776 he and his men would cross the Delaware River and attack the Hessians. Washington tricked and trapped the Hessians by attacking them from behind. Since the battle lasted less than an hour, Washington and his army defeated the Hessians. These are some key points on why the Battle of Trenton was so significant.

The battle of Brandywine, also known as the battle of Brandywine Creek, took place in Pennsylvania on September 11, 1777. Some major people and groups in the battle of Brandywine were Major General Sir William Howe, General George Washington, the British Army, which consisted of the British and Hessians, and the American Continental Army. There were close to six thousand people in the British Army, and around eight thousand people in the American Continental Army. Before the battle of Brandywine started, British Major General Sir William Howe attempted to seize Philadelphia and General George Washington strived to delay the seizure.

This battle took place after a demoralizing defeat at Long island. George Washington was forced to retreat all the way across New Jersey back in Pennsylvania. Due to the cold and harsh winter and the defeats in the previous wars, the Continental Army was one the verge of abandoning the rebellion act. Therefore George Washington needed to find something to build up the spirit in his troops. As such he then decides to cross back over the Delaware River and attack the Hessians (German hired troops) at Trenton, New Jersey.

In the movie, George Washington makes an arcane decision to cross the Delaware River to separate the troops from the other British command and attack the Hessians on the other side of the river. Hugh Mercer, Henry Knox, and almost everyone else besides Gen. John Glover was skeptical of this decision because the troops weren’t well trained and ready for this type of battle that Washington was proposing, which wasn’t a very propitious argument according to others. The Battle at Trenton would be the first time that the army attacked someone first, which was a huge step into the foreseen. However, on the day after Christmas, 1776, George Washington’s coherent plan led him and the continental Army to war and this resulted in them defeating a formidable garrison of Hessian mercenaries. The first battle occurred on September 19, 1777. The British, upon beginning the first battle, “advanced on the American army… in three columns, one by the river under the German Colonel Riedesel, the main force in the center commanded by Burgoyne and the third, commanded by Brigadier Fraser making a wide outflanking detour to the American left. The aim of the British was to take the unfortified hill to the West of the American positions on Bemis Heights,” (British Battles). The fighting began near the farm of John Freeman, between American troops and the center British Column. With nightfall coming, General Burgoyne sent 500 German troops from the river to the British central column.

The British army in this battle, led by General Cornwallis, had caused the allies 72 deaths and 180 injured. Of course Commander Washington’s army left the British with more damage, killing 156 and leaving 326 wounded. After all of those men were wounded and killed, the rest of Cornwallis’ army, 7,018 men were taken in as prisoner to the continental army. Cornwallis surrendered on October 19, 1781. With a surprise attack, the Hessians wouldn’t even have time to form their famous formations. George Washington carefully thought out this plan, portraying the leadership quality known as intelligence and this carefully planned decision/attack makes George Washington a risk-taker. Despite the fatigue and the winter weather, Washington is able to lift his weary soldiers' spirits, enabling the army to cross the river on the night of December 25–26, 1776. The crossing is done in one night, allowing the troops to attack Trenton at eight o' clock on December 26, 1776, and obtain victory by capturing the Hessians. Because the battle was won under the command of George Washington, morale increased significantly.

The battle resulted in American loss of New York and Brooklyn and the retreat of Patriot General George Washington's Continental Army to Manhattan. The British used New York as their headquarters for operations for most of the rest of the war. The battle was one of the American colonies' worst defeats in the entire war. On the Christmas of 1776, Washington famously crossed the Delaware River to attack a Hessian garrison at the Town of Trenton in New Jersey. Washington's army had been getting battered and had retreated to Pennsylvania.

The Battle of Valley Forge was the turning point of the Revolutionary War. Although no actual military battle was waged here, George Washington’s Continental Army faced some physical and mental battles of their own in this Pennsylvania town. It was here at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania where the Continental Army Soldiers of the Revolutionary War chose to go after being defeated in the Battle of Germantown in October 1777. During this winter, Washington’s troops came to this encampment to recuperate and train for future battles with the British.

Fischer states that the remaining soldiers were made up of groups of state militias. As the Americans are becoming more and more discouraged, Thomas Paine writes another article called “The American Crisis”. Fischer claims that this article put the spirit back into many Americans and some went up in arms once again. As the cold winter months approached, Washington had a plan. On Christmas night, December 25, 1776; Washington would move his troops across the Delaware River.

The Battle of Saratoga in September and October of 1777 is the turning point of the Revolutionary War because the French joined with allies, British troops surrendered their arms, and the Patriots had crucial victories. It was a victory for the Patriots in the American Revolution and is the most decisive battles in history. The Battle began as a plan by the British to control New York and isolate New England from the Southern colonies and put an end to the Revolution. Which ended as an opportunity for the Patriots.
