The Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC)

The National Honor Society, NHS, was officially started by the National Association of Secondary School Principals in 1921. It started in a Pittsburg high school, but quickly grew throughout the nation. NHS has maintained a long history of admitting exemplary students into the organization. NHS developed four main tenants that have helped guide the purpose, as Zeiger (n.d.) explained: "to create enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote leadership; and to develop character in the students of secondary schools". I have chosen to do the National Honors Society, because it helped me throughout my junior and senior years in high school.

I am originally from Nacogdoches TX but was raised in Greenbrier AR. After completion of high school I joined the Army on October 19, 2004 as a 21D (Engineer Diver). I attended basic training at Fort Lenardwood, MO. Upon completion or basic training I moved into phase I of advanced individual training at Fort Lenardwood and then to phase II at Panama City, FL. My first duty assignment was with the 86th Dive Detachment in December 2005.

With the stroke of his pen, President Woodrow Wilson created the Reserve Officers Training Corps or ROTC when he signed the national defense act of 1916. However the story of ROTC started as far back as 1819 when Captain Alden Partridge established a program of military instruction called the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy which later became Norwich University. At the Academy, Partridge originated a system of education that combined civilian and military studies in order to produce citizen soldiers. The cadets at his school had rigorous educational courses and tiring physical training exercises. Captain Partridge’s academy became so successful that his practices spread to other schools in the United States.

JROTC took place in 1916 with President Wilson signing the National Defense Act of 1916.JROTC was expanded by the Vitalization Act opened JROTC in 1964.Vitalization Act replaced most of the active duty instructors with retried of the armed forces. The United States authorized JROTC in the U.S. Code in Title 10, section 2031.

Bradley is a leader in the Boy Scouts of America. Over the years he has held numerous leadership positions within his troop and led several campouts. One leadership example in particular was when he led his troop during his Eagle Scout project. The Command Museum at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot asked Bradley to create something for the thousands of families who come every week to watch their loved one graduate as a United States Marine. Bradley came up with the idea of creating a life sized photo opportunity of a drill instructor correcting a recruit.

In this essay I will talk about the Army Leadership Code and its application, and about my personal ideal leadership model and how this fits in with the Army Leadership Code. There are many leadership models. The British Army uses the Army Leadership Code (SO2 Leadership, 2017). It uses the acronym LEADERS to make it easier to remember, each letter standing for a tenet of the code. The first is Lead by example.

Importance of Rank Structure “Military ranks are a system of hierarchical relationships in armed forces, police, intelligence agencies or other institutions organized along military lines. Military ranks and the military rank system define among others dominance, authority, as well as roles and responsibility in a military hierarchy. The military rank system incorporates the principles of exercising power and authority, and the military chain of command – the succession of commanders superior to subordinates through which command is exercised – constructs an important component for organized collective action.”

A topic that the Marine Corps has been debating for the past decade is whether or not there should be a policy regarding tattoos. It has been a constant struggle to balance the personal desires of the individual Marine and maintain the appearance of professionalism that is expected of the Marine Corps. A tattoo policy definitely needs to be in place in order to maintain a positive perception, sustain good order and discipline, and provide a standard of uniformity. As one of the elite fighting organizations in the world, the American public expects the Marine Corps to maintain a sharp, professional military appearance. There are many reasons I believe I should be inducted into National Honors Society. First, I maintain an A grade average. Second, I am a leader in my school and community. Third, I am very active with actives in and out of school. These are all great qualities to have.

The U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) is a program that was designed to teach high school students citizenship values, personal responsibility, and leadership all while using a military structure to teach students teamwork and self discipline. JROTC prepares the future of our nation to be a law abiding citizens in society. With the passage of the National Defense Act of 1916, JROTC was born. Today, in the 21st century, JROTC differs from 100 years ago. Without a doubt, JROTC will change in the 22nd century to adapt to social norms like today.

During World War II, Woman’s were assembled for duty in the Canadian Armed Forces, for the first time. The armed force was shy of men in war services and administration, which lead the Canadian government to choose and declare on August 13, 1941 to give woman’s the privilege to take an interest in war utility. 50,000 women were enlisted and more than half provided service in the Canadian Army. Most were doled out occupations including customary female work, for example, cooking, clothing and administrative obligations, also woman had pioneer roles in the mechanized and specialized fields. The Canadian Women 's Army Corps (CWAC) performed fundamental administrations, both at home and abroad, that achieved Allied victory.

JROTC is going to continue being successful. From the beginning of 6 units in 1916, JROTC has expanded to 1645 schools today and to every state in the nation and American schools overseas. Cadet enrollment has grown to 281,000 cadets with 4,000 professional instructors in the classrooms. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-aptitude battery exam that evaluates developed skills and assists predict potential academic and occupational success in the military. The exam is invented to measure aptitudes in four domains: Verbal, Math, Science and Technical, and Spatial. This exam was developed and is supported by the Department of Defense. The Military use the scores from the ASVAB to classify careers that best match students’ abilities.

The transition from enlisted into the ranks of officer is not a situation that anyone should take lightly. With greater rank comes greater responsibility, I emphatically understand the prestige and responsibility that comes with this transition. In this essay, I will answer three questions. Why do I want to be a military officer? What does society expect from me as a military officer?
