Texas Social Peculiarities

Ma and Pa Ferguson both left a mark in history when they were Texas governor. I would like to cover who they were, what they did, when it happened, and why they are important. Miriam Amanda Wallace also known as Ma Ferguson born June 13, 1875 in Bell County Texas. Once she graduated high school she attended college at Baylor college for women in Belton. She is also the first women to be Texas governor and the first women to have two separate terms.

The political culture of Texas can be described as being both Individualistic as well as Traditionalistic. Such descriptions as democrats or republicans divided into certain areas of El Paso compose the diversity over political beliefs, thus expanding a multicultural area by taking many other opinions into consideration. Education also divides people into certain groups, not segregating them, but rather classifying them into more groups that add up into more diverse and complex organizations. Education is a good factor when talking about diversity because it directly affects the citizens’ lives and relates to whom they are and what they do. Norms and values aggregate to the list of one of the many factors that cause cultural diversity in El Paso. Every known civilization has always relied on its norms and values to make progress because of a meticulous organization that keeps peace and union within the borders of each nation, state or city.

The Earth is such a gigantic planet, it is filled with so many different types of places, people, and culture. As humans started occupying the earth, the differences among them started to become interesting to other people across the globe. Tiny societies that later grew into giant cities throughout time started developing their own culture, religions, values, practices, etc… Carl Sauer mentions that cultural landscapes is the characteristics and tangible outcomes of the complex interactions between a human group and its natural environment. Over time people throughout time shape the natural landscape and accommodate their needs. El Paso, Texas is located on the border between the United States and Mexico.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like in the early 1900s during the oil boom in Texas? This wasn’t just the oil boom that started a boom in Texas it was also all of the other jobs that came up because of it. The three main social changes in Texas during the oil boom were, the jobs it created for Mexican-American and African-American people, the growth of state colleges because of the oil found underground, and the increasing divorce rates. Oil being found in Texas is what caused all of these social changes and shaped Texas into the great state that it is today.

The history of political parties in Texas is marked by nearly a century of Democratic Party dominance followed by a realignment that shifted the balance of power in favor if the republicans. Political science professor Cal Jilson noted that the dominance of one party in Texas has been a result of the state’s dominant values. Both parties in Texas today reflect more conservative versions of their national counterparts. The other chapter talks about the Interest groups in Texas. Interest groups plays a critical role in all democratic systems of government.

During my experience at Texas Boys State I was able to collaborate and interact with different young men across the state whom many had various beliefs and opinions especially in politics and society. This difference in opinions showed how my perspective of the world is not the same for some other person living in Houston for example. At the time it was a little overwhelming listening to all the debates and opinions for hours but fortunately I came to respect the beliefs of others and not let my personal opinion interfere with theirs. Overall, I had a wonderful experience communicating and working with these young men from various high schools across Texas where I learned that resepct is necessary when dealing with one who belief 's are different

In my essay I will provide three reasons why I do not believe Texas is operating within a democracy-a political system where the many rule. According to Author Robert Dahl, a democracy should provide opportunities for effective participation, equality in voting and inclusion of adults. There are socioeconomic factors- such ethnicity, education and income which are mentioned by author of our textbook, that impact voter participation. To begin, let’s look at the role a person ethnicity plays in a democracy. Next, examine the level of education and how it correlates to voting.

Briefly, in the evolution of the Texas political system, Texas’s history has been through many situations that shaped the political structure in Texas to become to what it is today. Many changes were responsible for the impact in the history of Texas such as the Texas revolution, the Alamo war with Mexico, military reconstruction act in 1867, etc. Before the war with Mexico, one of the most important impact in Texas history was the Republic of Texas Constitution in 1836. Texas and Mexico have an escalating tension and is responsible for the new change in the Texas state constitution. For the cause of the Republic of Texas Constitution in 1836, Texas begins by declaring its independence in 1836, established the Republic of Texas, and decided to adopt the new constitution.

From the very beginning of “American” history, other groups of people who were not of European decent were discriminated against and treated inhumanely and without the smallest regard for their lives. Native American populations were decimated by diseases brought oversea by Europeans and forced from their ancestral lands by settlers to make room for their expanding populations.

When I was 14 I had to move to San Clemente, California. I had already recently moved temporarily to Texas while a house was made ready for us on the military base. “The house is ready!” my mother had said excitedly, after being on the phone for a few minutes. “It’s time to go back?”

Laws and rules that date back to times when it made it difficult for people to stand out and have a voice. Texas based their laws on family values, school prayer, against abortion, and against gay marriage. Another negative aspect of Texas its location next to Mexico. Since Texas is bordering Mexico, there has been a lot of illegal Mexican immigrants crossing the border unto Texas seeking jobs that belong to legal Texas citizens. Though has been stricter laws put in place to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing over into Texas, there is still dispute over the issue
