McCullough starts the book off with the American colonies wanting freedom along with the conflict against the British forces. In 1775 everything led up to the major war that occurred in 1776. Tension is heavily implied between the opposing sides, even before the conflicts. I feel that because of the Americans actions of rebellion and the British forces coming to fight brought up major war between the two. The major conflict is that the colonies in America where still under British rule, yet so far away from England. Of coarse eventually the American colonies will officially want the land for their own and feel confident enough to be their own country. Because the English opposed of this idea, war breaks out between the Americas and British, …show more content…
The Americans come back with a victory after Knox’s return with the cannons. The cannons allowed them to develop strong fortifications in Dorchester, which lead to the British pulling out and sailing back up to New York. In April 1776, Washington has his troops march into New York. New york has been a major threat to Washington due to the heavily loyalist population. The British troops arrive in Long island moving towards New York when they defeat Washington’s troops in Brooklyn. More attacks occur in Harlem where Washington faced another issue in which the British surround him. His troops drew back down to fart Washington. By the end of November, Washington brings the rest of his troops into New Jersey. By this time, all of his men are tired and done with the war, many people have died and the rest are barley holding on. This becomes a major setback along with general lee being captured by the British causing the American troops to almost collapse. But, on Christmas day, Washington decides to go out with his troops crossing the Delaware River, sneaking into Trenton, New Jersey. Finally, his troops successfully overpower the British and gain them another victory after launching a surprise attack outside of Princeton, New
Rise to Rebellion by Jeff Shaara provides a detailed account of the years leading up to the Revolutionary War and ending one year into the war with the creation of signing of the Declaration of Independence. However, despite the large portions of historically correct information, there simply are not enough records to create a word by word account of the countless conversations leading up to the war. Because of this, Rise to Rebellion is, as it should be, considered to be a work of fiction. The novel mainly follows three main characters, General Thomas Gage, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams. However, Paul Revere, George Washington, Sam Adams, and John Hancock also provide a great deal to the story.
The seven chapters consist of about three sub divisions per chapter. Throughout chapters one through seven, there are several key points that are discussed. Chapter one begins in October 26, 1775 with the first person introduced, King George III McCullough then explained the conditions of England prior to and during the deployment of British troops to America. The war under commanders Howe and Washington officially began in Lexington then continued with the battles of Concord and then Bunker Hill. After King George III heard about the Bunker Hill incident, he sent his British troops off to Boston to take park in the battle.
David McCullough, in his Quill award winning book 1776, takes readers on a 294-page journey, which provides a vivid description of how Virginian born General George Washington became the first commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, and led them to victory against the British Red Coat Army commanded by General Howe, in the year of the American’s Declaration of Independence. McCullough, a Pulitzer award winning writer, diverts from his renowned biography writing of major historical figures such as John Adams, Theodore Roosevelt, and Harry Truman, to focus on the war and politics that shaped the most important year in America’s long and storied history in his book 1776. The book 1776 is said to be a companion piece to its predecessor John
Spirits were high until the British kept arriving in large numbers. Washington had to split up his army numerous times to keep the New York defended. Spirits began to fall and disease set in once again. Washington had to plan to retreat, which is no easy task with an army of any size. However, the retreat was perfectly executed with a thick fog settling in as dawn came to conceal the soldiers.
The book 1776 of David McCullough is very interesting history book. It took you back to the most relevant history time of American history of 1776. The book captures your attention with well-written narrative and format. The New york Times reviewed the book as “ the book is nonetheless a stirring and timely work, reminding us that it is soldiers rather than tavern patriots and windy politicians who have always paid the price of American idealism and determined successes” in 2005. David McCullough is a native Pennsylvanian.

First of all, the battle of long island began on August 27th, 1776, was the largest battle of the revolutionary war. It was the first major struggle that happened after the Declaration of Independence. The battle of long island was in the southwestern part of Brooklyn, New York. During the battle, George Washington desperately attempts to save his army save; however, due to the fog and rain, making it hard for him and his army to see as he tries to cross the east river to Manhattan, but by the time he arrived his army banished. After Christmas Day the Hessian troops would be drunk and wouldn’t have enough time to form in their formations. They crossed the Delaware River and stayed in one spot for 3 hours and then they would go down a single road and split the fork and take the 1 ½ of an army down each road. the roads were River Road and Pennington. They arrived and charged into the city. The general was taken by surprise.
This battle took place after a demoralizing defeat at Long island. George Washington was forced to retreat all the way across New Jersey back in Pennsylvania. Due to the cold and harsh winter and the defeats in the previous wars, the Continental Army was one the verge of abandoning the rebellion act. Therefore George Washington needed to find something to build up the spirit in his troops. As such he then decides to cross back over the Delaware River and attack the Hessians (German hired troops) at Trenton, New Jersey.
Defining the Subject The Battle of Long Island, fought on August 27, 1776, was the first battle as a unified Continental Army and largest engagement of the Revolutionary war. Also called the Battle of Brooklyn, given its location on Long Island, the battle was the first in the British campaign to capture the key port of New York from the Continental Army. New York was the gateway to the Hudson River, which the British sought to control dividing the colonies in two and cutting supply lines.
The relationship between Britain and its American colonies was civil at first but began to strain in the mid-1700’s. In the beginning, Britain ruled colonies with little involvement because they were busy dealing with the French and Indian War among other things. As a result of this, the colonies were typically left in charge of themselves with little interference from British authorities. After years of being left alone, the colonists had developed a feeling of freedom and independence. When the war ended there was a significant change in the relations between England and the colonies.
The American Revolution would soon follow the French-Indian War, and the harmony between the colonies and Britain would go down the drain in the war that shaped
The winter of 1777-78 was terribly cold, bitter, and harsh. These conditions made things very difficult for General Washington’s military unit. The unit’s morale and physical strengths were severely tested throughout this challenging and historical time. On December 19, 1777, General George Washington, the Commander of the U.S. Continental Army led the troops to Valley Forge in Pennsylvania for a few different reasons.
As dawn approached, he and his army would attack Trenton with all the force that they had at the time. The author stated that Washington had thought the battle was already lost because they would lose the element of surprise as the weather slowed them down which was pushing them into the daylight. According to Fischer, Washington and his army arrived to Trenton at around seven-thirty in the morning. They succeeded in using the element of surprise and the weather helped the colonial army and they took Trenton.
