T. C. Williams 'Racial Tensions In The Film'

Williams Titans finished the season with an undefeated record, a Virginia AAA state championship, and they finish the season ranked 2nd nationally. Coach Boone would continue coaching The Titans for four years after this season along with Coach Yoast. Both are considered to be football legends. The Titans not only defeated every team that they stepped on the field against that season they also defeated racism and united a community with their inspiring play on the field. They also showed everyone that skin color doesn’t matter and that all the players and coaches regardless of skin color and ethnicity had a common goal that they all wanted

With all of these soul-shattering, life-changing conditions, it is less of a war and more of a test of strength for the soldiers, here at Valley Forge. Some men were going home and not returning. Other men just completely deserted. Even George Washington’s position was uncertain, the members of congress didn’t trust him. Life at Valley Forge was obviously horrible, and the ugly truth is that it wouldn’t get much better.

Gettysburg Speech In 2000 at Gettysburg, Coach Herman Boone presented his football team with a heartwarming, pathos speech about a historical war event to cause his players to fathom the importance of acting as a team. Coach Boone’s Gettysburg speech was a mesmeric allusion to President Lincoln’s famous dedication, and provoked a comparison between one of the hardest fought battles of the civil war and the need for teamwork. His morning practice speech is meant to inspire by arousing images, to appeal to their emotions, on the consecrated field of one of the most difficult times in American History. “Anybody know what this place is?”

In the film Remember the Titans, racial prejudice and stereotypes are evident throughout. At the start of the movie we are taken back to 1971 where we are introduced to the town of Alexandria in Virginia and the new high school that resides in it, as two schools recently combined to form one desegregated student body called T.C. Williams High School. Football is an immense part of this town and for the people residing there. Shortly into the film, head football Coach Bill Yoast, nominee for the Virginia High School Hall of Fame, is demoted to assistant football coach and the school board hires an African American man by the name of Herman Boone to take his place. Dolores del Rio was frequently casted for movie roles that embodied the “exotic” and “foreign” appeal popular in the 1920s. In the silent drama film The Loves of Carmen directed by Raoul Walsh in 1927, del Rio is depicted as a Spanish gypsy, Carmen, who has the power to seduce any man. She has her heart set on Don Jose, played by Don Alvarado, and plans to win him over. Their relationship begins to take a downfall, and Carmen falls for another man--a bullfighter named Escamillo. Saddened but determined, Don Jose embarks on a journey to make Carmen his true love again.

Violent abuse of the African American race sparked the Civil Rights movement. The movement defined the struggle that people of not only color, but all different walks of life. The integration in schools caused both races to form a realization that they aren’t different through a common interest like football. In Remember the Titans discrimination happens a lot with black students being told to go back home to Africa and during this time of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s and 70’s; this sparked controversy between the adults in this story and were concerned about the future of their kids with these new black families were forced to move into these white neighborhoods during this time. Remember the Titans does indeed depict different forms of hate crimes and racism such as, members of the community racially profiling, people who aren’t extremists, but contribute to the idea of racist beliefs and acts,and

“I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something,” (Graham, Crash 2004). Is part of the quote said in the opening scene to the movie Crash released in 2004. The movie deals with many social topics that were big at that moment in time and still are thirteen years later in 2017. Three of the main topics are racism, prejudice, and stereotypes. Racism has been seen throughout years and is still being seen today in 2017.

According to the original 1971 Titans, there was conflict prevalent during training camp. However, most of the disputes arose from the competitive spirit of the camp- not racial issues

At Gerry’s funeral, you can see that unity is there as Sheryl points out “People say that it can't work between black and white, while here we make it work every day, we have our disagreements of course, but before we reach for hate always, always remember the titans.” That even when death happens unity is unity and it doesn’t go away no matter how long. The book I have chosen to review is Boy 21, a fictional read that is written by Matthew Quick. Quick is a New York Times best-selling author debuting in novels such as The Silver Linings Playbook and Love May Fail. To best describe this book, it is a captivating read that is comforting for the mind, as it canvasses the raw and unflinching life of a high school senior who displays love for basketball and life relationships. Furthermore, set in a troubled Belmont city of Philadelphia, Quick incorporates the presence of mobs and violence which is captivating towards the reader and audience. I was intrigued about how the novel was written through Finley the main protagonist, which was Quick’s childhood perspective of life in Philadelphia and his passion towards basketball.

The film Boyz N the Hood is a story about life in South Central Los Angeles. The film was wrote and directed by John Singleton in 1991. I chose this movie because of its relevance to the course and how it reflects pop culture in that time period. The opening line in the movie “one out of every twenty-one Black American males will be murdered in their lifetime” really catches the audience attention (Nicolaides & Singleton, 1991). This movie goes into detail and shows the life of three young males living in the hood of Los Angeles battling a life surrounded by drugs, violence, and questions of race.

Boaz Yakin, the director of “Remember the Titans”, tell us the story of an American football team of a recently integrated high school. The team transitions from hating each other to becoming a brotherhood. A turning point in this transition is the run to Gettysburg, where coach Boone leads the boys on an early morning run before delivering a powerful speech. After this scene the boys start to respect each other, respect the coach and overcome adversity. Using visual and verbal techniques, Yakin teaches us to respect everyone no matter what race, and to be resilient in the face of adversity.

The film starts out with an African American man walking in the suburbs. He sees a car and is frightened. A person in a hood strangles him from behind and kidnaps him. This illustrates the fear African Americans have in a white society. The movie then fasts forwards to New York City and turns the focus on Chris who is a successful young photographer.

Remember the Titans is a film based on true events that took place in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971. Two groups of people were forced together by the desegregation of T.C Williams High School. Despite the indefinite integration of the black and white students, the town was still living in a racially divided society. African American football coach Herman Boone’s arrival to T.C Williams further complicated things. In an attempt to tranquilize the escalating racial tensions he was given the head coaching position in hopes to placate the African /American community.
