Symbolism In Night By Elie Wiesel

The book night was written by Elie Wiesel in 1956 and is about the hardships that the Jews had to face. What is so significant about night? Why is the book called night? Night and darkness symbolize a world without god’s presence and for elie night, was very dark.

In the beginning, Eliezer is a very strong follower of the Jewish Religion. In the early part of the book, before they are sent to the labor camps, Wiesel shows that he is strong with his faith when he says: “I was almost thirteen and deeply observant. By day I studied Talmud and by night I would run to the synagogue to weep over the destruction of the temple (Wiesel 3).” This quote comes from the first page of the book, where Wiesel is talking about his life before the chaos started, circa. 1941.

In the story Night by Elie Wiesel, we follow Elie between 1941 and 1945 across Europe. Elie is an adolescent Jewish boy in tune with his faith. He would study Talmud by day and by night he would run to the synagogue to weep over the destruction of the Temple. In Sighet 1941, Elie was nearly thirteen when he met someone who everyone called Moishe the Beadle. Elie was so interested in learning more about his faith that he asked his father to find a master to help guide him in his studies of Kabbalah.

The motif that I chose from the book Night, by Elie Wiesel is “night”. This motif represents both physical and spiritual death, but it also represents death and despair. When Elie uses this word, it symbolizes when something in his life simply goes away, or when he enters a phase of darkness. For example, when Elie states, “Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed”, he is saying that the night that he entered the concentration camp, it of course changed his life forever, but it also was the night that he stopped trusting in God so much because he didn’t understand how God could be doing such horrible things to such innocent people. The tone of this story is intimate, and affectionate, it characterizes the extraordinary painful and personal experience of a single victim. The setting first takes place in Sighet, Transylvania, and then Elie is transported to several concentration camps such as Auschwitz, Buchenwald, and Gleiwitz; he spends the time there in the years 1941-1945, during World War II. Eliezer struggled to maintain faith in a caring God; Silence; Inhumanity to other humans. The first symbolism is fire; Madame Schachter foreshadows death and horror “look, look at it, fire, a terrible fire, mercy, oh that fire”.

Symbolism a lot is shown in the novel and winner of the Nobel peace prize Night by Elie. Wiesel. In this book the author is Elie and he tells about his life in the holocaust with his family mostly his dad. His mom died his sister was not with him but after the years they found each other and his dad died with multiple ways the first one the water the second was a bonk to the head the last is fire. Anyways he escaped and he wrote this pretty good book I liked it and with that let’s get started with symbolism in Night.

Through Elie Wiesel’s witness of a genocide of his own people, the horrors that became his reality for a period of time was a never ending series of darkness. In his memoir Night, Wiesel uses night to symbolize a period of suffering and despair during his experience through the Holocaust. Night also symbolizes the darkness and hole left in Wiesel after this disaster has occured. Many survivors of the Holocaust are still terrified to tell their stories based on the fact that what they experienced still remains shocking to express.

As portrayed in this passage from Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night, “night” is used numerous times as a central symbol. The nonfiction novel takes place during the Holocaust throughout several concentration camps. The word “night” literally means the period of darkness in each twenty-four hours; the time from sunset to sunrise, but symbolically it commonly represents sadness, fear, and negative commendations.

Eliezer is a young Jewish boy who studies Talmud and Kabbalah. The next day, his teacher Moishe the Beadle a group of deportees are on a train that get hijacked and everyone is taken captive. A very awful, tragic event occurs, the Gestapo (the group that hijacks the train) executes the deportees who were “used as targets” (6). Moishe survives the massacre but is very unstable and is driven to despair and cries “tears, like drop of wax” because the people do not believe him (7). There are now new laws to abide by, every Jew has to wear the yellow star and no longer has the right to perform certain acts.

The infamous Yin and Yang symbol, a balance between good and evil. There isn’t one without the other. Balance is the way it’s intended, for everything to be equal. However this is simply not accurate, nothing is perfect, the balance can tip towards any side. For some there is more light than there is darkness.

Symbolism can be seen through both good and bad alike. Though when it comes to instances that have to do with the holocaust, it’s almost always, if not always, a painful connotation. The holocaust is one of if not the the largest instance of mass genocide in recorded history. Leaving each Jew that survived with a different story to tell. While their story’s remained different, the pain that they each experienced was not.

At the end of the book Elie called himself a “corpse”. Why he said this because he went through a lot during the Holocaust, mentally, physically and emotionally. It all started when his family and him were placed in the ghetto. He was lucky enough to have his own house in the ghetto. He got to sleep in his own bed and live in his own house.

The Holocaust was one of the most horrifying times in the world for Jews. In the novel Night by Elie Wiesel, he retells his terrifying experience and existence within a concentration camp that was nothing more than the destruction of human life. As a thirteen year old boy, Elie Wiesel becomes got trapped in a world of hell. Auschwitz, a death camp for all Jews, was controlled by the German soldiers. Within Auschwitz all freedom and humanity is denied.

Prisoners in Auschwitz received about three “meals” a day. Half a liter of “coffee” for breakfast, and a liter of soup for the noon meal. For dinner, the prisoners usually received about 10 ounces of black bread, with 25 grams of sausage or margarine, or a tablespoon of marmalade of cheese. The small amount of food prisoners got in concentration camps caused them to starve. In the story, Night, the absence of food caused Eliezer and others around him to slowly change themselves and their morales, hoping for a little extra soup or a crust of bread.

The symbolism of“night” can be taken in as a way of making us feel an erie, dark, and domestic word with multiple meanings, in most cases when we use night we mean the time of the day when our sun fades away and our moon awakens. In this case though we can consider that Elie Wiesel wanted the word to have a meaning of darkness not just a meaning of nightfall. Wcan infer this because when reading the book Night we can visually picture where Wiesel was and even then all we see in our heads is the darkness of night and the horror of dehumanization and inhumanity.
