At the end of the book Elie called himself a “corpse”. Why he said this because he went through a lot during the Holocaust, mentally, physically and emotionally. It all started when his family and him were placed in the ghetto. He was lucky enough to have his own house in the ghetto. He got to sleep in his own bed and live in his own house. He was placed in the big ghetto, the bigger one of the two. When he found out he was being placed in the ghetto here’s what he said about it. “On the seventh day of Passover, the curtain finally rose: the Germans had arrested the leaders of the Jewish community. From that moment on, everything happened very quickly.” (p10). As time went on they didn't think of it as a bad thing. His family was then placed in a smaller ghetto before being taken to the camps. He was taken on a Tuesday. He describes the day before and that described the beginning of his journey. “Monday went by like a small summer cloud, like a dream in the first hours of dawn. Intent on preparing our backpacks, on baking bread and cakes, we no longer thought about anything. The Verdict had been delivered. They had to run for such a long distance. Whenever Ellie's father slowed down, Ellie did too they wanted to stay together. The had time to rest but he didn't want his dad to sleep because he thought he would never wake up. They ran without shoes and not the proper clothing. After arriving when they got to a concentration camp his dad slowly died in front of him. He did nothing. Ellie’s dad’s last words were his name. He went to sleep believing his dad died and then he woke up and his dad wasn’t
