Max Woodlief English 6 11/16/16 Hockey Speech Hockey is fast, exciting sport played by two teams trying to score in each others net. They play on a sheet of ice called a rink. Each team has six players on the ice, two wingers, two defensemen, one center, and one goalie. Hockey is a fast paced sport because players go across the ice hitting opponents, passing, juking, and shooting at the goal. On the ice players fight for the puck, a small rubber disk, and try to score in the opponents net. Players on each side get tired really fast and have line changes. Hockey is the only sport where you are allowed to switch out players while the puck is in play. A usual hockey player changes within forty five seconds. Sydney Crosby plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins and has been playing hockey for them eleven years now. Sydney Crosby also has had the honor to play for the Canadian team for six years now. Crosby has now a total of seven hundred and seventy one goals for his career in the NHL. Last season Crosby’s team won the Stanley Cup, which is like the Super Bowl in hockey. When Crosby said,” For me, I've learned that the best thing is to focus on the team you play for and yourself and what you need to do.” This is what makes Crosby the best forward in the NHL. He does not rely on his independent work to help him win, but has gotten his whole team strong to win the Stanley Cup. Crosby is a true team player and that is what makes him better than everyone else. As shown by what Crosby said,” I promise to play for the logo on the front, not the name on the back.” He likes playing for a team, not just for himself. Many players try to make great plays by themselves, but they are only one man. “I have been practicing since I was 4 or 5 years old, but that wasn't really practice. I was just having fun.... I just loved to play hockey.”(Crosby)Another reason Sydney Crosby is so good is because he has been playing pretty much his whole life and plus he loves every bit he does as a hockey player. He is one of the most coachable players any program will have. He is willing to do the little things or the big things whatever it takes to help the team. Stepping up as a freshman to become the team’s goalie was just a small sample size of what he is capable of
Players like Roberto Luongo and Pavel Bure have been a couple of the greats to put on the Canucks jersey. Pavel Bure, known as the “Russian Rocket” (Hockey Scouting Report) was a Russian winger known to have supersonic speed along with good balance and agility. Although not defensive, Bure contributed on the scoreboard, notching back to back 60 goal seasons with Vancouver. Disappointingly, Bure was traded away in 1999. Despite the trade, a new star would be arriving in a few years: Roberto Luongo.

The Miracle on Ice inspired many players around the country to believe that anything is possible and also introduced them to the sport of hockey. Part of the reason there was such a large increase in hockey participation after the game was because hockey became a national sport, instead of being a “northern sport.” The spread of hockey needed a tipping point, and this moment was it. The game also inspired many people to go on and play hockey including into the high levels, as they wanted a shot to do what that team had done. Hockey in America continued to grow into the southern parts of the country like Arizona, Nevada, and Florida.
Playing hockey has allowed me to meet new people, learn to work with others towards a common goal, and also be a leader to those who need it. Being a goalie is a position unlike any other. Why Hockey Should Allow Fighting The professional hockey league should allow players fight. This has been a long standing debate especially for the National Hockey League (NHL). Some administrators see it as unnecessary; some fans just want to see the teams play actually hockey; but many people feel that hockey would not be the same without the fighting. Players have said that fighting is fun, but actually part of the game.

Saul states, “In the spirit of hockey I believed I had found community, a shelter and a heaven from everything bleak and ugly in the world” (Wagamese 90). Thus, hockey serves as an escape route for all the emotional turmoil that Saul has gone through, and he uses the hockey spirit as a tool to facilitate his healing
As each day passed, Saul became that much better of a hockey player. It was obvious to many that he was put on earth to entertain, however Saul played for the pure enjoyment and freedom; “I would not let go of my dream of it, the freedom, the release it gave me, the joy the game gave me.
