Action, fantasy, horror, musical, romantic comedy, these are all well know genres of films, and many popular and epic films can fit into these categories. The term genre is well known to many, but what is the difference between genres and genre films? Well, genres are a type, or category, and genre films are usually easily recognizable as part of a certain genre, (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014). Genre films are easily recognizable because they tend to use familiar story formulas, character types, settings, and iconography (visual imagery with symbolic implications), all of which lead viewers to have certain expectations about what the movie will be like before actually watching it, (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014). The film, Sweeney Todd: The Demon …show more content…
This is what is can be classified as a film-noir musical. According to (CITE), the formal aspects of film noir are disconcerting camera angles, expressive use of chiaroscuro, and realistic urban settings. All of these aspects are evident throughout Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007). Furthermore, according to (CITE), when the music is deployed in film noir, it typically signifies discord, danger, or psychological disturbance. Which is also evident in the musical scenes in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007). This sub-genre of musical pushed the boundaries of the musical genre because it strays away from the conventional light-hearted and fun stories normally portrayed by musicals. This is what according to Mittell (2000) how genres often develop in process from "adjectival" additions to other genres (like the "musical romance") to fully realized "noun" forms ("musicals") to potential vehicles for new adjectives ("backstage musicals"), or in this case a film-noir
One film example that will have a sub-genre is a fantasy film. This type of film usually overlaps or crossover with other genres, like science fiction, and sometimes historical dramas (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014). While going forth with my paper on “The Wizard of Oz”, I will help the viewers understand
Painful stories that “force people to confront their most dangerous internalized philosophies” (Weakland). Without the production of West Side Story, other shows like Urinetown and Assassins probably wouldn’t have been produced. Because of Jerome Robbins and West Side Story, musicals could show the ugly side of human nature and plots could be
For this reason, the musical was more entertaining than challenging. While the musical did explore major themes of the movie, the exploration and portrayal of these themes fell short of that in the movie. This can be attributed to the musical numbers and their influence on the tone of the musical. If the tone and the music had been darker, more themes could’ve
The question “ How much of what happens in our lives do we actually control?” is present throughout the story Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, and the story of Chris McCandless, named Into the Wild. Both stories demonstrate this theme through the choices the main characters make in their lives, Macbeth was told his prophecy from the witches, which set him on his path towards his chosen destiny. In the case of Chris McCandless, he chose to live a very minimal life, which to led the camping trip that caused his death. The choices that these two people made answer the question of “How much in our lives do we actually control?”.
The two movies I will use in this analysis are “Girl Can’t Help It” and “Grease” they both are musical. “Girl Can’t Help It” is a romantic musical about down and out talent agent, washed up gangster, and a beauty. The washed up gangster has plans to marry the beauty but first he wants her to be famous because he doesn’t want to marry a nobody. So he hires the talent agent to make her a star. Due to here great looks he has no problem finding that to book her as talent but soon finds out that she lacks talent.
Genre is a label that categorizes a film to the audience, but not to assess the artwork. It can be defined as a hint or trigger that makes the viewers willing to purchase the tickets and to spend their leisure time watching it. Sometimes movies contain more than one genres which is hard to be identified. Nonetheless, Singing in the Rain and La La Land, the two well-known musical films had created great impacts in the musical movie industry. Both films use “singing” to create love stories along with the plots and cinematographies by making the female character the famous movie star at the end.
When people think of musical theatre, they imagine jazz, kick lines, high notes, and jazz hands. This stereotype of musical theatre largely began in the 1920’s with the Ziegfeld Revues, though this art form has gone through a metamorphosis since those days the stigma stays (Lubbock). Hamilton contains almost none of these archetypal images of musical theatre. Perhaps that is why Hamilton has won 11 Tony Awards, a Pulitzer, and tickets are selling for $850 each (Lopez). However, as anyone who has been following the Broadway scene knows, there are hundreds of shows that break these conventions and think outside the box.
Sweeney Todd and A Little Night Music especially, normalized the musical/opera hybrid that can be seen in many of the popular musicals that followed it. Into the Woods was a musical that all
They created this film as a backstage musical by showing the protagonist’s situation and cutting to a jazz performance, emphasizing the protagonist’s point perspective or mindset of the situation. In the textbook “Looking at Movies”, Richard Barsam says, “During the process of envisioning and designing a film, the director and production designer are concerned with several major elements. The most important of these are (1) setting, décor, and properties; (2) lighting; and (3) costume, makeup, and hairstyle” (183). The overall design of this movie is portrayed to be dazzling; how the actresses dress in flashy costumes and actors dress up in classy costumes, how each scene somehow connects to a stage performance by everything set up prior to the performance, and how light brings the overall design of both setting and costumes to create the showy theme. Composition is what brings the design together, organizing and balancing everything used to set the viewer’s mood.
The plot of the film revolves around Kathy Selden filling in as the voice of Lina Lamont, a silent film star with a voice not appropriate for sound. Before WWII, it was not important for musicals to have realistic aspects, and the plot was not needed to hold the numbers together. As time passed, in the mid-1950’s, film became more authentic and psychological. Along came the “integrated musical”, where one tried to imagine a situation where an individual would sing in the real world.1 Singing in the Rain was a realistic depiction of what the film industry went through during that transitional time. Many of the incidents in the movie were based off real people and experiences.
Since its production, the book has been overshadowed in notoriety by a progression of musical-showy adjustments, which are additionally among the most prevalent shows in the standard of musicals, proposing a liking in the middle of musicals and Oz (Bunch, 2015). Beacon Readers
Topic 1: Film genres Through the 1995 film “Clueless”, written and directed by Amy Heckerling, the idea that film genres are located in industry and texts and audiences is clearly shown. “Clueless” is an American typical romantic comedy. This film can be seen as a hybrid genre as it include different characteristics of two film genres. In this movie, elements of humour and romance are both illustrated by its generic formulas and story content. The film talked about the heroine Cher goes through her perplexed teenage and finally realizes she is interested in Josh, her stepbrother.
The word genre comes from the French word for 'class ', (Chandler, 1997). Film genre refers to a specific style or subject matter. A movie may have several different components that may make up a specific genre. Genres makes it easier for the audience, as the categorization of genres lets the audience pick what sort of movie they would like to watch. Film genres give the audience information into the type movie it may be, this in turn helps them to decide whether the movie is suitable for them or not.
A Streetcar named Desire written by American playwright Tennessee Williams is a Marxist play that depicts the socio economic status of the characters and people living during that time. The play was written in 1947, two years after the second world war. The historical time leading up to the Second World War known as the Interwar period from 1918-1939 was an era classified with economical difficulties for a majority of American citizens. After the new economic system based upon capital emerged succeeding the Industrial Revolution, the United States saw a massive prosperity in the early twentieth century only to be demolished by the stock market crash of 1929 also known as Black Tuesday (source). These unsuccessful stock markets were one of the signs that showed that the new system, which depended on an extensive labor force and an open and unregulated market, was not as reliable as previously thought, this period was known as the Depression.
In conclusion, the modern-day motion picture La La Land has achieved success in a variety of ways like winning a variety of awards for its efforts, either from the cinematography and directing, to the acting and vintages ways of shooting the film. One can see how a modern-day musical can achieve such success with going back to basics and learning from the golden age of Hollywood to make such a wonderful
