Susan B Anthony Dares

In John Kennedy’s Profiles in Courage, he defines political courage as one’s willingness to take action on personal ethics, even though it may trigger public criticism, retaliation, and political death. (Kennedy 7) Shirley Chisholm, the first African American Congresswoman used her voice to advocate for racial minorities, women, and the poor. Chisholm was a bold woman who wasn’t afraid to raise current social issues that many avoided talking about. On account of her strong sense of justice, she faced numerous obstacles in her years in office for doing what she believed was in the best interest for our country.

She held her ground she also had a lawsuit after a railroad company kicked her off of her first class seat. Although she won in court, the case was reversed on appeal. Being a woman only made the obstacles she faced she was very determined. No content will bring her confidence down.

The novel “In the Time of the Butterflies” by Julia Alvarez explains the many ways the Mirabal sisters overcome fear and oppression.

Rosa Park once said “I have learned over the years that when one's mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear.” She was determined not to give her seat up. (Rosa Parks Biography) She stood up for what she had believed in and she had got arrested for it. The next day the whole world heard about and they started to have riots and tear up

All Sarah ’s life she was taught that slaves are not equal to whites, but she still fought for them. She stood up to anyone that was against her even her family. Sarah went out way of her and sacrificed things to save others. Throughout the novel courage helps the characters get through difficult situations.

The story Susan B. Anthony Dares to Vote and Jim Carrey both share the theme of perseverance. In the story Susan B. Anthony Dares to Vote, Susan shows perseverance by never giving up her fight for women's rights to vote. Jim Carrey showed perseverance throughout his life since he was homeless and had no money. In contrast, in Susan B. Anthony Dares to Vote, Susan persevered to fight for what she had believed in. But in Jim Carrey's life he persevered in order to save his life and his family.

Jemima and Lucy, her servant who used to be a slave, were the only people in the house when the Hessians and British came to town. Instead of fleeing, she stood her ground and stayed in her home in Trenton unlike many citizens of the town. When she was speaking to Mr. Moore, against his wishes, she stood in Trenton and kept the shop open with Lucy (Rinaldi 168). Also, when the Hessians came into her home and ransacked the home, she still stayed at her home. These examples show courage.

Courage is one of the defining elements of the human spirit. It is one of the driving forces of human progress. Without it, human beings would not be able to move forward and discover new things. It is through courage that humans ask questions and dare to seek the answer. Throughout American History, we see these examples of courage at work, but perhaps we see the greatest concentration of these events in the lives of the American slaves.

From the Bible to made-up stories; very old stories to Hollywood movies,our culture is rich with excellent stories of courage for the greater good. From David fighting Goliath in the Bible, the cowardly lion in The Wizard of Oz who gathers the courage to face the witch, to Harry Potter and stars war, kids are raised on a diet of heroic and motivational stories. History books tell colorful stories of social advocators, such as Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King , who chose to stand out against terribly unfair treatment at great personal risk.

Susan was the main leader during the suffrage movement along with Elizabeth Stanton. Many men were against the woman's movement and were not going to deal with what was going on. But some men were pro for the movement. The woman were very strong leaders throughout this time period and were not going to give up in any conditions. Many women were put in jail due to the fact that they were just fighting for

By the age of 17 she was collecting anti-slavery petitions. This, combined with many of her stances proves that Susan B. was not a racist for not supporting the 14th and 15th amendments. On the other hand, Susan B. was devoted to winning freedom for all of America’s citizens. Along with Elizabeth Stanton, Susan B. Anthony helped lead the women’s suffrage movement. In 1872, Anthony was arrested for voting in Rochester, NY.

Courage is being brave and taking the risk of doing something. In the book Witness by Karen Hesse many citizens did not like African-Americans , Jews and Catholics. Leonora Sutter, a character in the book, is a 12-year-old who is African-American and everyday deals with many citizens not liking her because the color of her skin. Courage comes in many ways and Leonora keeping her head high and not paying attention to it is an example. There are many racist people in the town like the KKK.

In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, Calpurnia, and Atticus stand out when courage comes to mind. These characters show courage in many unique ways with different situations. In the early 1930s, in the deep south, racial discrimination was a huge conflict, for example, the Jim Crows Laws were in play, and it legalized segregation between blacks and whites. Courage isn’t always shown in situations, but simply throughout growing up.

Courage can be found where it is least expected. In her book, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Mildred Taylor uses Cassie as an example courage. Courage is the ability to do something, even though you are frightened of doing it, which Cassie shows a lot throughout the book. Cassie is a little girl, who is very smart, sassy, and courageous. She stands up for what she believes and helps others that need a voice.
