Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, is a story about Melinda Sordino. Melinda was an incoming freshman at Merryweather High, and was entering ninth grade with no friends. During the first school assembly, the new girl in town, Heather, introduced herself to Melinda, sparking somewhat of a friendship. Melinda also came across her ex-best friend, Rachel. Rachel had mouthed the words “I hate you” to Melinda, even though all she wanted to do was to tell Rachel what really happened at the infamous summer party.

Speak The book I am responding to is called Speak written by Laurie Halse Anderson. This book is about a teenage girl named Melinda Sordino, who begins her high school year with a big secret. Over the summer she and her friends went to a party where Melinda was raped, she called the police, causing her friends and everyone at the party to reject her. Later Melinda befriends a girl named Heather, a new student at her school.

I recently read the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. The main character Melinda Sordino went through a lot during her summer. Her freshman year isn't off to a good start. During the summer she called the cops at a party, no one knew why she kept it a secret, but she soon tells of what really happened. She changed a lot throughout the story from being depressed, staying home and hiding in a closet at school, to becoming open and telling her secret of what happened to her.

“Speak,” is a novel by Laurie Halse Anderson. The setting is in Syracuse, New York in the early 2000’s. Melinda Sordino is the narrator of the story and is a freshman at Merryweather High School. During the summer before her freshman year, she goes to a party with her close friends filled with alcohol and music. At the party, she drinks many beers and becomes intoxicated.

Throughout the book, Melinda struggles with opening herself up to people and being able to tell her story.

And all she can do is think to call the police for help, but she doesn't realize that she is about to get almost everyone in there school busted for drinking. Everyone finds out she called the police at the party and everyone neglects and hates her for getting them in trouble.

Melinda starts school off with no friends, she lost the ones she had over the summer. A traumatic event causes Melinda to shut everyone out, and not speak to anyone. Growing up usually takes time, but Melinda is rushed into maturity too soon and must help others do the same.

Walking down the halls getting dirty looks, after what seems like attending a fun party over the summer when everything goes downhill. Getting raped. Sure enough, this is exactly what happens to the main character, Melinda, in the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. This book was an amazing choice that leaves an impression on the audience to never give up. Throughout this novel, a very important message is relayed to the audience, never give up.

Peer pressure affects teenagers because they feel like they have to do it and they are expected to do something that they don’t want to. I feel that in “Speak” Laurie Halse Anderson is practically saying that peer pressure is everywhere and a lot of people do it.     In the story, Melinda was pressured into drinking, having sex, and skipping class (Halse). I have been pressured into skipping class a few times, but I have never done it. Melinda and I have both been pressured into skipping class (Halse).

Peer pressure can make you do bad things that can have terrible effects on your future and you will not be the same person you once were. Being yourself is an amazing accomplishment, many people fail to stay the same and become drug addicts or possibly suicidal and that is why peer pressure is so dangerous. If you change as a person it will not end well and your future could be ruined.

Experiencing peer pressure is a way to learn how to overcome pressure and to discover ourselves. We can not become perfect, but we definitely become stronger, more confident and are willing to cope with difficulties. Exposure to peer pressure also gives us an opportunity to think about other people’s outlooks towards life. It is a chance for us to choose the best from what the masses do as well as lead us to make right choices in life. To minimize the bad effects of peer pressure, parential involvement plays a very important part – it promote healthy behaviors and decrease the chance to engage in risky behavior.
