In "Strange Creatures," Susan Blackmore mentions the notion of "Successful Memes" and "Unsuccessful Memes," but does not go in detail to explain what really makes a meme successful or unsuccessful. However, through Malcolm Gladwell 's "Small Change" Why the revolution will not be tweeted," we are able to interpret in detail that what really distinguishes a successful meme from an unsuccessful meme. Gladwell 's essay provides solid evidence of successful memes when he mentions the Greensboro lunch counter encounter and the lost cell phone case. Furthermore, the phenomena of "Strong-ties" and "Weak-ties" help us better understand why memes are successful in being transmitted. Along with that, the timing of carrying out a meme is significant …show more content…
However, Blackmore tends to go against that idea as she implies "Instead of thinking ideas as our own creations, and as working for us, we have to think of them as autonomous selfish memes, working only to get themselves copied"(Blackmore,37). For a meme to be successfully transmitted, one must generate new ideas constantly. Through Gladwell 's essay, we are clearly able to interpret that we do have the ability to generate ideas. As Gladwell implies, "It was McNeil who brought up the idea of sit-in at Woolworth 's"(Gladwell,137). It shows that we are able to generate ideas on our own. This idea can perhaps be termed a successful meme, as the sit-ins were spread to different states in order to evoke a change. A meme is most likely to be successful if it tackles a real problem, a historical event, which requires self-sacrifice, asking us to be bigger and have the guts to actually take on a challenge. The challenge which the four college students take on is huge, which is taking on the whites by performing the sit-in. They perhaps though the time is right to bring a change as they were frustrated at being left out and being …show more content…
It is clear through Gladwell 's essay that successful memes are those which have a significant importance in history, and those which address real problems. Blackmore terms meme into two categories: successful memes and unsuccessful memes. The example mentioned in Gladwell 's essay of a successful meme, such as the Greensboro lunch counter encounter, addresses a real problem which is racial discrimination. Unsuccessful memes based on Gladwell 's essay are those which have weak-ties, such as activism through social media. However, as Blackmore describes memes, she says that they are something that are imitated and transmitted to one another, but if unsuccessful memes are not able to be transmitted, how can they even be called memes? Gladwell disregards the use of social media as successful memes, suggesting they do not have strong ties, but really, does one need strong ties to bring a change? Gladwell himself mentions the case in Moldova, in which thousands of protesters were brought together to the streets by the use of social media. Supposedly by "weak-ties." the protesters able to bring a change, and hence dubbed the "Twitter Revolution." So it is seemingly alright to term memes through the use social media as to successful memes. Furthermore, Blackmore seemingly disagrees with the fact that us humans can be creative, whereas Gladwell 's essay contrastingly suggests that we do not lack creativity, indeed our potency is progressing the world further. MHHS Parking Spot Painting Controversy September 19, Mountain Home High School began experiencing issues with a fundraising campaign allowing students to paint their parking spaces after a “#blacklivesmatter” portrait was produced. Students began doing a sit-in in the MHHS parking lot after complaints were filed under a mural dedicated to black lives matter was produced in the parking lot. Because of MHHS allowing for a prohibited fundraiser to take place, students are now disregarding their educations in an effort to shed some light on the situation being presented.
Elements like diction and syntax plays an important role in the development of Malcolm Gladwell's thesis. This summary of his thesis is ‚We are so caught in the myths of the best and the brightest and the self-made that we think outliers spring naturally from the earth. To build a better world we need to replace the patchwork of lucky breaks and determine success. Gladwell uses diction and syntax to give depth and understanding to the target audience. In Outliers, Gladwell examines several different groups of people or individuals who went from rags to riches.
I agree with James Baldwin’s argument, because like me, he sees sit in protest as something that shouldn’t be labeled passive, but something that should be seen as an act of bravery he explains this by saying: “I don’t agree that it is necessarily passive. I think it demands a tremendous amount of power, both in one’s personal life and in terms of political or polemical activity, sometimes to sit down and do nothing-or seem to do nothing” (Baldwin). The sit in movement as I see were black taking action and demanding what they want in a country that has oppressed them for hundreds of years. An example of the power of the sit in movement is The Greensboro Protest of 1960 when four students from black Agricultural and Technical College of North

Are We Living In Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451? After reading the article Are We Living In Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 I have come to the conclusion that I do agree we are living in Fahrenheit 451 for many reasons. Over the past couple of years many people have forgotten what real communication is all about, it is not about tweeting and texting to each other it is all about real face to face interaction. According to the article it states that “similar kinds of arguments about the dangers of the web and social media” (Ingram 2) have also been made.
They expressed their protest by sitting. It was highly effective because it initiated by black students. When Martin Luther King was in jail, the leaders in Birmingham decided a new strategy. A group of black children would march in Birmingham to protest against racism. If the children of Birmingham couldn’t awake American’s conscience, they thought, then nothing would.
Secondly, intelligence is dynamic innovation. The third is distinct.” A child’s intelligence will not be diverse, distinct, and diverse if creativity is not focused within public school education
n today’s society the internet plays a huge role in the everyday lives of many people, therefore many individuals’ main form of communication is over sites like Facebook, and twitter. In Malcolm Gladwell’s essay, “Small Change, Why the Revolution will not be Tweeted,” he explores the different methods used by activists nowadays versus those used by the activists in the 1960s. Gladwell argues that social media is not an effective tool to initiate revolutionary movements or any change at all for that matter, based off its weak ties formed over different social networks. Gladwell illustrates multiple cases of protests and adds that without the assistance of social media, these protests were stronger, prearranged and based off deeper emotional ties. Throughout the article Gladwell continuously returns to the Civil rights movement and why it was effective.
In “Small Change”, Malcolm Gladwell explains how activism is affected by social media. Gladwell looks negatively upon new “tools” of social media for activism, in particular social activism. She thinks this form of activism is weak and perhaps not even activism. She defends activism as unions of people who have a personal relationship and fight against a conflict that involves them all. An example of this in the text is the Civil Rights movement, where African
Sit-ins were a justified act of civil disobedience during the civil rights movement because they were non-violent, they spread the news, they brought people together, and they helped people to stand up for themselves. One of the most important parts to civil disobedience is remaining non-violent. Sit-ins during the civil rights movement were great examples of remaining peaceful. There was a sit-in in Chicago that only happened because they were refused coffee.
He refers to Picasso’s statement that every child is born an artist (6:05). Robinson urges the crowd to rethink the strategies they use to educate the world. The speaker quotes that people do not grow into creativity but out of it or rather educated out of it. Robinson asserts that education
Social media has a major effect on today’s society. People are being manipulated, influenced, and even brainwashed from apps and websites they use every day. Social media is used to hold social interactions, promote events or products, and keep people up to date on all kinds of news. Because social media can do so much for its users, it basically controls every aspect of their lives. In Aldous Huxley’s, “Brave New World”, social media wasn’t controlling their society, but other technologies like the Bokonovsky’s Process, the Feelies, and Soma were.
These needs demand to be encountered beforehand we can thrive. After these needs are encountered we can grasp self-actualization and are nowadays free and cosy plenty to express ourselves in a creative manner. Social media was developed to link people to the world and is an effortlessly convenient method for communication. Due to this, people are able to get in touch with just about anyone from all over the world and it no doubt has an incredible amount of influence on our lives. However, not all of it may be positive.
