The Breakfast Club Often times high school students align themselves with one set group of values or expectations causing a third party to assume one’s personality, otherwise known as a stereotype. These stereotypes whether a jock, a trouble-making jerk, a rich popular kid, a genius, or the weird student that that is very misunderstood; cause people to not take the time to get to know one another. Many people would fit into one of these social categories, as do the main characters in The Breakfast Club, produced and directed by John Hughes in 1984. Hughes argues that everyone is different and no one, not even adults, have the right to determine a person’s worth based on their looks or social status. The movie portrays different stereotypes ranging from the most popular student to the student that is constantly in trouble and comes from a rough home life. The main characters are Claire, Bryan, Andrew, Allison, and Bender. Principle Vernon plays a key role in the development of the plot in The Breakfast Club. His character is used to represent other adults in the world at this time and their opinion on teenagers. During the movie, the five students are put in the library to think about their actions and the reasons why they are there; however, they end up bonding and getting to learn about one another. The characters begin to genuinely listen to one another and make the most of the unpleasant situation they are put in. The students put aside their differences and end up becoming true friends. Just like in real life, the characters in books, whether they be side, main, or background characters, are misjudged to be something that they are not. This misjudgement usually has negative effects and authors use it to give the reader a moral. In the books The Outsiders by S.E.Hinton and Lord of the Flies by William Golding, two young characters are misjudged by their peers and the reader is taught a useful moral. John Hughes’ 1985 movie, The Breakfast Club, offers uncountable examples of the ideologies of interpersonal communication. Five high school students: Allison, the kook, Brian, the brain, John, the criminal, Claire, the princess, and Andrew, the jock, are required to devote the day in Saturday detention. At the end of the day, they discover that they have more in mutual than they ever grasped. I will begin by choosing a scene from the movie and using it to explain what interpersonal communication is. The interpersonal transaction I chose to isolate was the scene where we see Bender and Claire going through each other’s wallet and purse.
Overall, The Breakfast Club is a classic teen film by John Hughes that depicts the different perceptions of the five high school students who come from different sociological groups. However, people soon realize that when you start to eat bananas that have more spots and are imperfect they turn out to be sweeter and better. This connects to stereotypes because people who follow stereotyped will always eat the perfect bananas; however, people who choose to look through another perspective can realize that the imperfect bananas are better. This connects to The Outsiders because Ponyboy realizes this after he talks with two Socs, kids from a rival group named Randy and Cherry. In The Outsiders, S.E Hinton presents the idea that teenagers can break through stereotypes if they look at life through another perspective; as shown in the book when Ponyboy starts to talk to Cherry and Randy and realizes the stereotypes about them are false.
They all share their personal problems that they wish to escape. Bryn from The Breakfast Club, shares his feelings with four fellow strangers about being suicidal. Bryn expresses how he feels pressure from his parents to be “the perfect child”. This causes him to feel overwhelmed and stressed. When sharing his feeling and emotions with these four strangers, it creates a bond between them all.

In addition, it seeks to highlight the different identity statuses, as well as, the factors that facilitate or hinder identity formation.
The film “The Breakfast Club” exemplifies group dynamic because at the start of the movie they don’t know each other and they think that the personalities are the same as the stereotype linked to their social group, but when they get to know each other the stereotypes go away and they realized that they are very similar. B y the end of the film everyone in the group figures out that they aren't that much different and they are all struggling with being misunderstood, so they realize that they were judging the other people in detention when they weren’t so different. Mr. Vernon gave everyone in the group a piece of paper and a pencil and told them to write a 1,000 word essay on who each one thinks they are. The group responded to the assignment by writing one essay explaining that it was stupid to write who each person thought they were because each person was a basket case, criminal, brain, athlete, and a princess.
The Breakfast Club portrays elements of adolescent development very well. In this stage of our lives we are trying to figure out who we are. Some of us may explore different identities and there are others that just do what others tell them to do. The movie depicted role confusion in each of the characters. It also talked about peer pressure and how it influences how we act.
Society is built upon a grand scale of assumptions and misunderstandings, all of which tend to lead us in a path for the worst. There is, however, a remedy for our seemingly infinite list of problems that lead us to war, hate, and unrest. Unfortunately, this remedy is not very likely to be found because we have not been looking in the right places, which happen to be right beneath our noses. You see, we as a society have spent our lives writing books, directing movies, and painting murals, and yet we have overlooked our own genius; Footloose, The Breakfast Club, and Dirty Dancing. These three movies all share a common thread, and it’s not their epic soundtracks and classic ending scenes.
