Education is a system that allows those to receive information that will help you gain knowledge on developing new skills, techniques, and self-growth which usually takes place in schools. In early education, students are taught to do things to the best of their ability. However, how can a student do so if equity in education does not exist? Being that equity in education does not exist, some students are being negatively stereotyped due to race.
Specifically in education, “stereotyped individuals” begin to mentally internalize these inquiries that society has forced upon them and begin to “perform below their potential.” These students are being evaluated by society and academia based on race determining their chances of success in education.

Incidentally, some of these stereotypes are based on race. To further explain, African Americans are opted from educational success because of the negative stereotypes that they face as children. At a young age, African American students are being taught that their work will be unsatisfactory in school. For instance, Ronald Takaki states in his book, A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America, “Stereotypes of blacks as children were linked to notions of black intellectual inferiority (Takaki, 100).” Before African-American students enter schooling, they are being reassured that they are inferior to White students. By learning and understanding some of these stereotypes, African American students do not perform to the best of their ability through “practice so that future failure reflects less on their ability.” These students are preparing themselves for failure because the educational system has already prepared it for them. Regretfully, African American students are expected to fail instead of excel because of the stereotypes that they are being told, therefore proving them right by not executing in education to the best of their ability. When students of color start to internalize these ideals they begin to believe them. In many cases, some students are first exposed to race in education. For instance, in many schools that are placed in a diverse community, schools educators are not of the same race as the students, which can be a model of what race is superior to others. This is where race plays a huge role in education because students are being taught about the world in one races’ perspective. When educators ignore these facts that race is non-existent in schools, it blocks students from the truth. For instance, “schools that reward white students” usually “penalize minority students” which starts to create an environment “where students’ of color feel marginalized and excluded.” This can create the idea that educators are purposely leaving minority students out of praise and only praising the work of students their race. This can confirm for some students that education has a color line for both educators and students that are being praised. In the second chapter of the book, Whistling Vivaldi, the author, Claude M. Steele, makes a number of fair assessments on how people’s prejudices and preconceived notions can interfere with someone’s ability to live up to their full potential. Even those who don’t notices these preconceptions can be unintentionally placing them on others, unwittingly experiencing them, or both. There are several key points that Steele raises in his writings which reinforce the aforementioned thoughts, one being that the students are unconsciously aware of the biases they place on themselves, another element is that when students feel bigotry being placed upon them, they oftentimes underperform, and lastly the lack of balance which can be found in experiments.
There are certain tools that are essential in schools for the success of education. Whether it be reading, writing, comprehending, or problem solving; these are all tools that are advantageous to possess in one’s education. Unfortunately, not all groups are able to acquire all these tools as easily as other groups are. It is unequivocal that education plays a major role in one’s future, but certain students cannot achieve their ideal education because of the lack of a proper education system. This is what leads to the inequality in education for students of color who are from an underprivileged area, compared to students on the contrary.

For countless years, there has been deliberate bigotry against people of color all around the world. However, today in America the social prejudice against the African American race has become almost entirely a thing of the past. Researchers argue that the discrimination people of color face has lessened over time and the barriers between whites and blacks have weakened. Education in America has changed significantly to benefit all races since the 1920’s. Education is an essential part in any person’s life no matter their race and every person should be able to receive the same opportunities.
According to Voight’s, Hanson’s, O’Malley’s, and Adekanye’s study, many black children reported of having less favorable relationship between their white instructors compared to white students, while black and hispanic instructors tend to have a steady report of positive relationship and attitude with their students from all races (Voight, Hanson, O’Malley, Adekanye, 2015). Moreover, in a sample from the Texas school districts, districts with more Hispanic and Black teachers have better success in their students’ academic performance for all races, compared to districts that have a larger number of white instructors (Voight, Hanson, O’Malley, Adekanye, 2015). This goes back to the discrepancies in a student-teacher relationship when both parties do not share the same understanding of each other’s background and cultures. The rift in the relationship is mended when a mutual understanding manifests between the two. Culture of Exclusion Social exclusion has been noted to be a subtle phenomenon, that often goes unnoticed, and when it is noticed, often the individual who is being excluded receives the blame and not the environment or those in it (Howarth, 2006). In educational settings, people of color are made to feel as if they do not belong, either knowingly or unknowingly (Howarth, 2006). Often enough, schools and universities think that discussing racial exclusion is either of no use, outdated, or already taken care of because of the measures that are currently in place by their administration, but they could not be more wrong (Kohli, 2008). The audacity of whites came their various oppressions before landing in America, Douglass states, “that they had conquered the sea, and had conquered the land, but that it remained for them to conquer their prejudices,” (Douglass, 568). Educated philosophers preach the Negro inferior to the white man, Du Bois states, “Many Americans social philosophers still persist in ascribing to Negro inferiority,” (Du Bois, 42). In today it is not directly stated, but rather suggested. White is still ideal, from personal experience, some private schools in Washington D.C have a minority cap to only allow an exact number of students of color. The schools where more students of color were allowed had funding issues, thus making it difficult to have the latest tools and labs to teach in.
Another thing that places students of color at a disadvantage in college admissions is the persisting cultural bias in high-stakes testing. “High-stakes” tests are those that are tied to major consequences, such as admission to college, or even high school graduation. Fair education reform advocates have long been citing an extensive record of standardized testing concerns, many of which relate to racial bias and discrimination. Many people come across roadblocks through their journey of life. I know I've had my fair share of them. The biggest bump in my academic life was changing it completely upside down. Growing up african American or with any skin that holds the slightest of pigment is not easy, but that's obvious due to our nation's past. Racism and stereotypeing has always been there.
Racial inequality in education is predominant in black students and is perpetuated further by educators. A theory that explains this could be the “hidden curriculum” theory which conditions students to believe that their cultural backgrounds must be silenced to resemble the model white student. Studies show that training educators in cultural sensitivity and establishing trust between students and teachers allows students from varying cultural backgrounds to improve in classroom settings. RACE INEQUALITY IN U.S. EDUCATION Considered the “melting pot” of the world due to its high diversity, the United States has been renowned for the varying cultures and races populating the country.
Racism and classism management in schools today What if you were not offered the same opportunities based merely off of the color of your skin? What if your peers thought lesser of you because of how much your parents made? It may seem like something of the past, but these manifestations of racism and classism continue to lurk among the depths of schools across the globe. Andersen and Collins’ purpose is to have students think about race, class and gender as systems of power, how the three categories matter in shaping everyone lived experiences, and to understand race, class, and gender are linked experiences. Furthermore, Anderson and Collins adopt an unbiased, and assertive yet friendly tone for his/her audience, the readers and others interested in the topic of race, class and gender. By doing this, the readers can relate to the struggles that the issues bring up, however the authors can still get their point or message across

“Racism distorts our sense of danger and safety. We are taught to live in fear of people of color. We are exploited economically by the upper class and unable to fight or even see this exploitation because we are taught to scapegoat people of color (Kivel, P).” This quote from the article, The Cost of Racism to White People, barely digs at one of the reasons why racism still occurs in today’s world. There are many motives out there for why racism still occurs.
