152074 Lit 14 – Introduction to Poetry and Drama Memory of Yesternight: Analysis of Sorrows of the Moon In Charles Baudelaire’s Sorrows of the Moon, the moon is imagined as a woman. With this attribution, the moon is given the privilege of being seen and treated as a lady throughout the poem thus referring to it as a “she” rather than an “it”. In the first two lines of the poem, This evening the moon dreams more lazily/As some fair woman, lost in cushion sleep, the moon is at once imagined as a beautiful lady about to go to sleep through the use of the associative word “As”. This association is further supported by rest of the lines of the first stanza wherein the poem used the words “hand” and “breast” which are special features of a human. In a special case, the poem defined the hand as gentle and the breast having contour or edges. Such distinct features are conventionally attributed to a lady. The poem also related the actions of dreaming and sleeping to the moon thus making it …show more content…
The tear drop was also described as “where rainbow hues appear” thus it could be said that it is full of colorful memory of the moon’s appearance. In this situation, it is assumed that the poet considers the tear drop of the moon as a memory of the rare situation he witnessed with her (moon). He keeps this in his chest, near his heart, showing that he pays importance and value to such rare tear drop. He hides it from the sun which wakes the unconscious people of last night’s moment. Sorrows of the Moon by Charles Baudelaire This evening the moon dreams more lazily; As some fair woman, lost in cushions deep, With gentle hand caresses listlessly The contour of her breasts before she sleeps On velvet backs of avalanches soft She often lies enraptured as she dies, And gazes on white visions aloft Which like a blossoming to heaven
It’s detailed like a memory and provides the audience of just one incidence the narrator was able to recollect. The poem’s main focus is to take a little look into the disparity between traditional feminine
In regards to the historiography of gender politics in the Victorian era, the social position of women and femininity had become a problematic issue. Similarly, the gender apartheid instilled prior to the civil war in Afghanistan. A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, initially published in 2007, is set in Afghanistan from the early 1960s to the early 2000s. In this, it explores the story of Mariam and Laila as the protagonists, who teach the reader the reality of life as a woman in a backward Islamic country. The story covers three decades of anti-Soviet jihad, civil war and Taliban tyranny seen from the perspectives of these two women and observes how they become to create a bond, despite having come from previously living in very different backgrounds.
“The moon rose over the bay. I had a lot of feelings.” - A poem by Donika Kelly With a purpose and message being the goal for their work, poets are often found using many specific qualities in their writing. By making use of these devices the poem is a piece of composition that connects with its writer. Strategies like the ones used in this poem have been utilized since the beginning of writing.
‘Annabel Lee’ by Edgar Allan Poe is an eminently beautiful yet tragic poem centred around the theme of a forbidden love between two people, and the many obstacles that they overcome in order to be together. At the same time the poem relates back to a man’s undying love for his wife in which even death is unable to hinder. From the beginning of the poem, I realized Poe to be an articulate person who has a beautiful way with words, as he describes the origin of his love story between himself and Annabel Lee. This was shown in Stanza 1 where I identified him to be a kind and doting person, as he continues to talk about a maiden from the kingdom by the sea whom only wished to love and be loved by Poe. As this was written by Poe and shown from
After viewing Moonlight, which was personally my favorite film of the year, I choose to analyze the scene when Blue takes Chiron to the ocean and teaches him to swim (17:20-19:30). This scene first drew my attention because of Blue’s character. The dynamic of a crack dealer with a heart-of-gold has this duality about it where my heart tells me to love him as a person, but my head tells me that this person is Chiron’s mother’s dealer, and I should despise him for it. Yet, when I watch this scene I can’t help but think of how much I love Blue as a character. He is able to fill in for the role of a father figure, and teach Chiron about life.
This becomes evident in a lack of information about the type of society, and the reader therefore lacks a complete understanding of how the women are oppressed. As a whole, this poem sets forth the idea that female gender is fluid, and asks its readers to questions what it means to be a woman in a male dominant
The different key features also plays an important role for example the tone that is being formed by the lyrical voice that can be seen as a nephew or niece. This specific poem is also seen as an exposition of what Judith Butler will call a ‘gender trouble’ and it consist of an ABBA rhyming pattern that makes the reading of the poem better to understand. The poem emphasizes feminist, gender and queer theories that explains the life of the past and modern women and how they are made to see the world they are supposed to live in. The main theories that will be discussed in this poem will be described while analyzing the poem and this will make the poem and the theories clear to the reader. Different principals of the Feminist Theory.
The poet also characteristically shows a solemn and serious tone, showing the reader that there is no room for humor, petty or frivolous thoughts. Also, the poets’ personality is shown through her chosen theme of boots, bearing wide
In “Acquainted with the Night”, poet Robert Frost examines the inner workings of a lonely, depressed mentality. Through his extensive use of symbolism, Frost demonstrates exactly how confined and flustered someone in that conditions feels. There are two specific symbols that, if analyzed, unravel the meaning behind the poem: the symbol of darkness, the symbol of walking, and the symbol of large distances. Darkness is a perpetually popular symbol, and in this poem, it is certainly prominent/ Historically, darkness has been used to symbolize malice, evil, sadness — generally, anything adverse.
Abstract women have been living very miserable lives throughout the history somewhere because of gender differences and somewhere base on lame excuses of religion. They do not have equal rights, freedom, opportunities as men and have been suffering gender-based violence perpetuated towards them in the male dominated society. Afghan women show great strength and resistance in the face of adverse circumstances. They have developed traumatic problems and in reaction to their problems, they have grown very resilience to the Afghan tradition and men harsh treatment. The research entitled “Trauma and Resistance of Afghan Women: A Critical Study of Khaled Hosseini’s Novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns”, was intended to critically analyze the novel to explore trauma and resistance of Afghan women.
Formula fiction is defined as literature in which the storylines and plots have been reused again and again until they are predictable. One such piece of literature is A Secret Sorrow by Karen Van Der Zee. A Secret Sorrow as well as more serious fiction such as A Sorrowful Woman are fantastic stories that provide entertainment and pleasure. A Sorrowful Woman, however, is the better of the two stories because of the male protagonist, the female protagonist’s internal conflict and the child. Both A Sorrowful Woman and A Secret Sorrow have male protagonists whom are there for the female protagonist in their time of need.
The moon is an object of darkness as it only appears during the night in darkness. The moon always carries “a small valise of darkness”. The moon’s valise is equivalent to the mother’s small handbag. A small handbag is used to carry essentials showing that the darkness is a part of her, so mother’s dark and negative aura is a part of her and therefore is shown wherever she travels. The darkness that mother brings infects the environment making the speaker sad.
When the narrator first noticed the so-called love of his life, he says, “my body was like a harp and her words and gestures were like fingers running upon the wires” (Joyce np). With this, the narrator is provided with a newfound purpose in life, yet this does not last long.
The first stanza of the poem personifies Africa as a woman of her beauty. The second stanza shows the history of Africa crippled of her powers. The third stanza shows Africa is rising from the suffering of her past. First, the poem personifies Africa as a woman to define the continent’s beauty. The poet uses the earthly method to compare Africa to a woman.
“Bishop’s carefully judged use of language aids the reader to uncover the intensity of feeling in her poetry.” Elizabeth Bishop’s superb use of language in her introspective poetry allows the reader to grasp a better understand of feeling in her poetry. Bishop’s concentration of minor details led to her being referred to as a “miniaturist”, however this allows her to paint vivid imagery, immersing the reader in her chosen scenario. Through descriptive detail, use of metaphor, simile, and many other excellently executed stylistic devices, the reader can almost feel the emotion being conveyed. Bishop clearly demonstrates her innate talent to communicate environments at ease.
