Formula fiction is defined as literature in which the storylines and plots have been reused again and again until they are predictable. One such piece of literature is A Secret Sorrow by Karen Van Der Zee. A Secret Sorrow as well as more serious fiction such as A Sorrowful Woman are fantastic stories that provide entertainment and pleasure. A Sorrowful Woman, however, is the better of the two stories because of the male protagonist, the female protagonist’s internal conflict and the child. Both A Sorrowful Woman and A Secret Sorrow have male protagonists whom are there for the female protagonist in their time of need. In both stories the male protagonists are receptive and understanding of the female’s problem. However in A Secret Sorrow Kai is the knight in shining armor that comes to the rescue and solves the problem. Kai sees the problem and confronts it head on; he grabs Faye and says “No, Faye, no. You’re going to tell me. Now. I’m not letting go until you’ve told me everything.”. In Contrast, the husband from A Sorrowful Woman has a meek personality; the wife says “...he understood such things.”, and the husband does understand the problem but he lets the problem fester and grow worse rather than find a solution. The flaws in the male protagonist makes him more realistic and more believable than the knight in shining armor from A Secret Sorrow. …show more content…
In both stories the internal conflicts partially or completely stem from children. In A Secret Sorrow it is the female protagonist’s inability to have children that causes her internal conflict. In A Sorrowful Woman the child is partially the cause of her internal conflict because he is very high maintenance. She has to make up a story out of the thin air while pretending to read it from a book after a long day of cooking, cleaning and generally taking care of him. After She snaps the boy only makes it worse for her such as when “ The boy followed them up the stairs, saying “It’s all right, Mommy,” but this only made her
In the short stories “A Rose for Emily” and “The Story of an Hour,” the authors use literary devices to create vibrant female characters. These literary devices include diction, imagery, language, and sentence structure. “The Story of an Hour,” written by Kate Chopin, opens with a woman, Louise Mallard, who has a heart disease, and her friends must gently break the news to her that her husband has passed away in a railroad accident. She mourns briefly, but then realizes that she can now live for herself, instead of just as someone’s wife. Shockingly, she walks downstairs after fleeing from her friends’ horrible news, and her husband walks in the door.
When she tells him she can't handle being a wife and a mother, he responds, "You're ill...you're not yourself" (Godwin, 1971, p. 2). This passage proves the husband's inability to comprehend and relate to his wife's difficulties. The quotes in these two novels depict the various relationships between husbands and wives. While Faye and Kai share a strong emotional bond, the husband in "A Sorrowful Woman" is portrayed as distant and uninvolved in his wife's
Ethan Frome from the book Ethan Frome fits the description of a tragic hero, but only in some aspects. In most aspects, Ethan more closely fits the description of a pathetic coward. Ethan Frome does have a reversal of fortune because of his error in judgement, but Ethan is not hubris, nor is his fate greater than he deserved. Conversely, Hamlet does fit the mold of a tragic hero well. He had a flaw of judgement in deciding to avenge his father, his fortune is reversed from a wealthy prince to a dead man, Hamlet does realize he brought about his own fate, he does have excessive pride, and his fate is the worst kind of fate; death.
3. The audience for the essay, “Laws Concerning Food and Drink; Household Principles; Lamentations of the Father” from the Atlantic by Ian Frazier is for parents. The audience is portrayed throughout the essay through the tone of the narrator. The narrator uses a superior and authoritative tone as he is speaking, much like a parent. Because the narrator is describing the house rules, responsibilities and directly speaking to “you,” it is indicated that when he says “you” he is referring to the children of the household.
(lines 93-98) It appears as if women are hard to understand and decipher when it is men who simply have a misunderstanding of the women’s needs. It seems as if the knight will never find his answer to such a simple question until he comes across an old lady who
The world is a hostile and violent place and the woman had a right to be fearful of him, but it troubles him that he cannot change the fact that he was the cause of this fear. He begins to understand that he has the opportunity to change the enviorment around him solely because of him being a
Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” Often times, when there is conflict that involves violence and threat of personal danger, people tend to become compliant to those who intimidate them instead of holding their ground and acting on their own beliefs and values. Such was the case for the majority of the French nation during the Second World War after Nazi Germany invaded and occupied the country between 1940-1944, only occupying a certain area until 1942 when Germany infiltrated all of France. The Vichy government of France, led by Marshall Philippe Pétain, ended up complying with their occupiers’ orders and signed a law that would allow
Perseverance means to me to keep on trying to do something despite the difficulty of how hard it is. And to stay spiritually strong and to never give up at anytime until you have reached your goal or your expectations. The 5 stages of grief are Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. I think everyone goes through at least 1 of the 5 stages of grief, because everyone has trials that they go through in their life.
With the wife being sensitive to the husband when she “was still crying” about the husband’s smart comment makes the reader think that she is easy to upset (Brush 19). With seeing this reaction the reader might conclude that the couple might have a past of predicaments. As for the husband, he comes across as a harsh man when he says the “punishing thing” to his wife (Brush 17). Just through this one statement the reader can feel a sense of dominance over the wife. The reader understands that the husband has more control in the family.

The human life is known in their stories to tell and these stories are written from their experiences in life. Marion got a recommendation to seek the help of a Narrative Therapist because she came to the point of feeling down, the children have grown and left home. A counselor must be aware that Marion, a 45 year old woman, plays a fundamental role in the creation of her realities, though it may seem true, it is just a subjective interpretation of her experiences. It is important that Marion feels understood by her counselor in order to work through her feelings. It is a fact that there are always events that may fall outside her story but narratives are drawn upon to become her dominant story.
Whereas of his second wife, Lady Rowena, all he had to say was that she was fair-haired and blue-eyed. The author takes the stance of the bereaved husband who fell into despair after the loss of his loving wife to the cold hands of death. He tries to numb his pain by turning to opiates but fails to find solace. He then thought that getting married again would give him a replacement of his dead
In contrast, the narrator and her husband are grieving the loss of their child and trying to come to terms with their grief. In fact, the contrast between two pairs of all intentions and goals aimed at emphasizing the loss of the most important emotions of the narrator and usually emphasizes the universality of sadness, which is very important. Another important comparison of history is the important shape between the narrator's internal monologue and her external behavior. The narrator's thoughts must be filled with sadness, and she certainly won't be able to enjoy the evening or really have a conversation with another beautiful couple, or at least they mean it. In contrast, her outward demeanor was calm and composed, especially as she maintained a nonchalant look throughout the night.
As a result both characters prioritize the oaths they give to each other and turn out to be ready to break their marital vows in favor of feelings. This essay will
