Fraternities and sororities how are they the same and how are they different? Fraternity come from the Latin word ‘fraternus’, which means brother. Sorority gomes from the latin word ‘soror’, which means sister. When someone is a legacy then they are almost always automatically accepted into a sorority or fraternity, this is because of the legacy system. A legacy is a person who is related to someone that was apart of a sorority or fraternity, before them. In order to get into a sorority or fraternity, otherwise known as ‘house’, you must rush.
