In the 1930’s there were many horrible things that went on. Harper Lee wanted people to be more aware of that so there are many things in To Kill a Mockingbird that were inspired by the 1930’s. This made the book more realistic and helped people really understand what it was like and how much society has to change. Some examples of horrible things that occured would be the Scottsboro trial, the Jim Crow laws, and the racial tensions. At these times people believed that white people were better than black and that black people are untrustworthy and below everyone else. These laws existed in order to tell the African Americans what they could and could not do. People believed that even God believed in their segregation and that black people were born to be servants to the whites. People believed that black people were cursed but the white people were blessed. “Under Jim Crow, African Americans were relegated to the status of second class citizens”(What was Jim Crow). Some of the Jim Crow laws include: a black man cannot shake hands with a white man since this shows social equality, white motorists have the right-of-way at any intersection, and never dispute dishonorable intentions with a white person. The article lists many more horrible laws that black people were expected to follow just to show that white people are better than them. These laws inspired Harper Lee since these laws also showed how hard black people had it and what they had to go through. This shows how they they were looked down upon and how in a trial people would always side with the white person since they are not cursed like the black person. Another tie between these laws and the book is that Tom Robinson broke one of these laws. One law states that a black person should never imply that a white person is lying, well the trial is about how Tom Robinson is stating that Mayella is lying about him raping her. To Kill a Mockingbird was written by Harper Lee in 1962 during the Civil Rights movement, but was set in Alabama in the 1930s. Lee’ father, who was a lawyer in the South during a time of racial prejudice paralleling Atticus, defended an innocent Black men in a case he later lost. Similar to Atticus, Lee’s father lost the case because his client was Black. Having experienced this racial prejudice first hand, Lee chose to write this novel to highlight the racial injustice that took place during the 1930s and the many effects that occured from the racism. Lee uses ethos and logos in Atticus’s speech to the jury, to inform the reader of the injustices of racism.
It’s an awful feeling knowing that no matter how hard you work, you’ll never earn as much money as your white counterpart. Sadly, this has been the case for hundreds of years for African Americans living in the United States. Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird, wrote the book in 1960’s while the events in the book take place in the early 1930’s. During the 1930’s, the Great Depression just hit the United States, the unemployment rate grew and many families lived in poverty. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee describes the childhood of Scout, also known as Jean Louise Finch, and her older brother Jem which is short for Jeremy Atticus Finch. The Finches were fairly wealthy compared to the rest of the residents of Maycomb County, Alabama, which is due to Scout and Jem’s father, Atticus Finch, being a lawyer. Throughout the beginning of the novel, Harper Lee uses symbols to foreshadow the loss of innocence leading up to Atticus’ big trial with Tom Robinson and Mayella Ewell.

When the Scottsboro case was happening, Harper Lee was six years old. So thirty years later, she had written a book based on the Scottsboro case. Nine black men had been accused of rape by a white woman, and in To Kill a Mockingbird, there was one black man who had been accused of rape by a white woman. Harper Lee was inspired by the Scottsboro Boys’ case when writing her novel due to the similarities between them.
The Jim Crow Laws were a series of rigid anti-black laws throughout the southern states. These laws follow a belief that whites were superior to blacks (Jim Crow Museum: Origins of Jim Crow 1). Jim Crow was rooted from an African American culture song and made sure that blacks used different schools, prisons, transportation, telephones, housing, bathrooms, and even games. Whites and blacks were never allowed to marry and black were not allowed to vote (American Historama 1). Many states could impose legal punishment if a person with a different race were to consort with a white (Jim Crow Laws 1).
The ever present distaste from whites in Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, shows the issues that blacks had to deal with constantly. Lee was able to portray this hatred by putting and important character, Tom Robinson a black man, on an unjust trial for the alleged rape of a white woman, Mayella Ewell. To Kill a Mockingbird was a book written in 1960 by Harper Lee, the novel commented on and exhibited the social injustices of the early 20th century. More specifically speaking, the horrid displays of prejudice and racism in the Scottsboro Trials of 1931. The Scottsboro Case involved two white women accusing nine African-American teenagers of raping them in the back of a dark train car. The trial occurred in southern Alabama and held an all-white jury. Although the boys were very clearly innocent they were still convicted and given the death sentence.

Blacks were treated equally in the book. Tom Robinson was accused of rape but he truely didn’t do. The reason why people thought he did do it was because of his race. Tom Robinson was a black worker that had an arm that didn’t work so he couldn’t use it.
The Scottsboro Boys Case and To Kill a Mockingbird were cases of the injustice of black men. Harper Lee was trying to point out that a person 's skin color or race does not justify the actions they done, that anyone who practices prejudice is foolish. That prejudice is an actual reality that a person experiences first hand and hurts others in the process. Like Harper Lee with her father being a lawyer she must’ve experienced it first hand. These stories teach us that you shouldn’t judge a person by their race.
Although the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, took place in the 1930s, it ties closely into the Civil Rights Movement. This novel displayed the obvious superiority whites had over blacks. It took place during a time when colored people faced discrimination, prejudice, and racism. When the book was published in the 1960s, it made whites furious, resulting in a lot of controversy. Harper Lee had a goal when writing, she wanted to show the relation between actual events that happened during the civil rights and incorporate it into her own novel to show how cruel colored people were treated, specifically when whites accused blacks of doing sinful acts.

Living in Maycomb, in the midst of a conservative society of the 1930’s and 20’s Southern America Scout Finch is an extra ordinary child.
