The time period of the 1930s included The Great Depression, Jim Crow laws, and the Civil Rights Coalition, leaving hardships and crime in their wake. Harper Lee’s famous novel To Kill a Mockingbird that was published on July 11, 1960, gives the readers an insight of what it was like for her growing up in a small southern town in the 1930s. The events she witnessed growing up as a lawyer’s daughter during this time had significant influence for the best-selling novel To Kill a Mockingbird that won a Pulitzer Prize in 1961, and became an Academy Award winning film in 1962. Another influential highlight of this time period in Alabama was the Scottsboro Case. In the 1930s, there was ample attention towards the “Scottsboro Boys”, nine black youths falsely charged with raping two white women in Alabama. No crime in American history-- let alone a crime that never occurred-- produced as many trials, convictions, reversals, and retrials as did an alleged gang rape of two white girls by nine black teenagers on a Southern Railroad freight run on March 25, 1931. This case depicted the extent of barbarous treatment of blacks. One of the main events in To Kill a Mockingbird is Atticus Finch’s case involving a black man, Tom Robinson, and a white female, Mayella Ewell. She was known for being part of one of the most disgusting families in town and accusing Mr. Robinson of raping her after she asked him inside the house to help her with a chore. Since she was white and Mr. Robinson was black, no matter what was said, the jury would take the white persons side of it due to the discrimination of blacks during that time. With Lee being the daughter of a well-known lawyer in the county it is evident that she was aware of the happenings of the Scottsboro Case enough to have been the influence of the Robinson Case in To Kill a Mockingbird. It’s an awful feeling knowing that no matter how hard you work, you’ll never earn as much money as your white counterpart. Sadly, this has been the case for hundreds of years for African Americans living in the United States. To Kill a Mockingbird reveals the everyday struggles that African Americans endured during the 1930’s. Many of the events in the novel were based on the author, Harper Lee’s life. Nine young african american men were accused of rapping 2 white women in 1931 (Scottsboro Boys) and a black man was accused of rape in To Kill a Mockingbird. The men were falsely convicted due to the fact that they were black men and the victims were white women.
On March 25, 1931 the lives of nine black teenagers changed after they were allegedly accused of being involved in a gang rape of two white females. This began when a fight broke out on a train after a white male named Orville Gilley stepped on the hand of a black male named Haywood Patterson who was hanging from the train itself (Linder, “The Trials of the Scottsboro Boys”). The white males involved went to a stationmaster to report the alleged assault which resulted with posse members coming to take the nine black males away. (Linder, “The Trials of the Scottsboro Boys”). Two white, female mill workers named Ruby Bates and Victoria Price also accused the nine black males to raping them.
In The book To kill a Mockingbird I think Atticus is Scouts biggest influence. Atticus has the best beliefs in May comb in my opinion and Atticus tells his children Scout and Jem his beliefs about racial things with complete honesty. Atticus doesn't lie or sugar coat anything to neither of his children. A brief example of this is when Atticus tells Scout " That you can't judge someone until you crawl into their skin Atticus is Scout biggest role model but what makes him her role model is not him specifically trying he tries for everyone for instance taking the case he is trying to prove a point, but he also did it for himself. The author separates her ideas by piecing them in different sections of her writing using headings. However, she mentions the main idea of her informative writing throughout the different paragraphs. The main idea of her short writing was that the Scottsboro Boys' trials showed an enormous degree of racial inequality that existed in the United States' criminal justice system and most of the Southern United States. The Scottsboro Boys' trial sparked African-American protestors and activists to push the government to improve the racial equality in justice systems.

Their names were Olen Montgomery, Clarence Norris, Haywood Patterson, Ozie Powell, Willie Roberson, Charlie Weems, Eugene Williams, and Andrew Wright. All nine of these men are said to have raped two women on a train going through Jackson County in northeastern Alabama. During their trial, they got the name the, “Scottsboro boys”. The men all denied ever seeing the two women on the train, but an all-white jury found them guilty and eight of the nine boys were sentenced to death.

The story mainly revolves around the Finch family, that include Scout, Jem and their father, Atticus, who is a lawyer and as a single parents try to raise his children with all respect to their individualism. As the novel proceeds, certain characters are connected with the three top characters to form a dramatic story of events, attitudes, prejudices and values.
