“It was cruel and slimy and its eyes shone green. A part of the night it moved through, its wicked heart was darker than the darkest place in that night. Even the moon would not look at it.” (pg. 7)that, was Grendel. I think that Beowulf is a book worth reading because it is exciting and meaningful.
Beowulf is a book that takes place in Denmark. There once was a man named Hrothgar. He had a dream to build the biggest and glorious hall in the country, called Hall Heorot, so he did. That night, a strange, slimy creature appeared in the hall, it was Grendel! Grendel, a monster from the fen, filled the hall with blood, and when Hrothgar woke up that morning, he was devastated. Grendel killed the warriors, and the ivory floors and walls were dripping

Grendel would snap their backs and eat them. Hrothgar thought that there was nothing to do until Beowulf came. Beowulf came to Hrothgar and told him that he wanted to fight Grendel. Hrothgar didn't have much faith in Beowulf when he came. Before Beowulf was about to fight, Hrothgar asks Beowulf where his sword was. He said swords were no use against Grendel in the past, so he wasn't going to use one. Beowulf and Unferth(a weird, drunk man), wanted to see Beowulf fight Grendel, so they stayed in the Hall to wait for him. Grendel came smashing through the doors, but when Grendel tried to attack, Beowulf held onto his arm. Grendel's struggled to get loose but he couldn't. He was getting weaker thought the lightness and power of Beowulf. Beowulf still held on, and then, from all of the struggling, Grendel's arm …show more content…
Wealhtheow is a very humble person who wears blue, and is very kind. Hrothgar is a strong king, who build a spectacular Hall, and Beowulf is a brave hero. What makes him different is that he admits the bad things about himself. Unferth is a drunk man, who doesn't want Grendel want to die. Grendel is a monster from the fen(a dark, wild, and ugly land with monsters), who doesn't like the light. He is slimy and gross. The ¨She¨ is Grendel's mother, who lives in the fen as well.
Gilgamesh(a character who is part human and part god) is similar to Beowulf because they were both heroes and very brave and courageous. Beowulf told his flaws, but Gilgamesh did not. Gilgamesh also used swords and weapons to defeat his enemies, but Beowulf used his hands, the power of lightness, and beehives.
I think that Beowulf is a book worth reading because it is exciting and meaningful. Beowulf is a great book because it tells us that even the best people admit their flaws and what they're bad
The battle between good vs. evil in Beowulf is portrayed through Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon which helps us get a better understanding of the good and evil. The poem Beowulf does a very good job in representing good and evil. We get to see how they take action and in some way how good always wins. Also how a religion was extremely important during this era. Loyalty is shown as well it proves how not everyone has your back.
He then arrives in the hall, which was well protected more firmly than before, tearing the door off its iron fasteners with a touch. He then saw the sleeping warriors, such a sight he relished, to which, his heart laughed and intended to “tear the life from those bodies”. He then grabs a sleeping geat and tears him apart with his jaws. Next he grabs an alert Beowulf but was instead seized himself and his claws were bent back by one of Beowulf’s hands, which struck fear into the monster. Beowulf then has both hands and his men proceed to attack Grendel with their swords but it doesn’t harm him.
In the story “Grendel” by John Gardner, the monster Grendel is portrayed as a beast. Grendel is shown as a villainous monster in the epic poem, Beowulf. Throughout the story, Grendel shows characteristics including jealousy and bitterness. These features substitute Grendel's murderous intentions and turns him into an evil creature. Near the end of the novel, Grendel’s villian trends transforms his life into a never ending battle for acceptance.
He carefully strategized his plan to defeat Grendel. He waited for Grendel to come to Heorot, then surprise attacked him. Grendel put up a fight, but Beowulf was stronger and more intelligent. Beowulf ripped the arm off of the beast, sending him away to die. Not only did Beowulf have to defeat Grendel, but Grendel’s mother came back for revenge, so Beowulf set out to the darkness where Grendel and his mother lived.
Beowulf sets sail with fourteen of the Geats to battle Grendel. Grendel is so powerful that mere steel cannot injure him. Despite knowing this, Beowulf still chooses to fight him. Not with a sword and a shield, but with his bare hands. “ My lord Higlac might think less of me if I let my sword go where my feet were afraid to, if I hid behind some broad linen shield: my hands alone shall fight for me,” (166-174).
Beowulf puts his wisdom and knowledge as an epic hero to the test when he battles Grendel. When he and his men are fighting Grendel, they realize that no sword can penetrate him. When Heaney writes, “The monster’s whole body was in pain, a tremendous wound appeared on his shoulder. Sinews split and the bone lappings burst. Beowulf was granted the glory of winning; Grendel was driven
In the epic poem Beowulf, the protagonist, Beowulf, faces three “monsters” at different times in his life. The poem begins with Grendel, a monster who attacks only in the dark of night, tormenting the kingdom of Hrothgar. The last two sections of the epic detail the conquering by Beowulf of Grendel’s mother and the dragon. The battle between the monsters and Beowulf represent the theme of good versus evil in the poem, as well as the fusion of pagan and Christian ideals in the changing Germanic society. Grendel’s mother’s actions directly juxtapose the role of a woman in this time period, and the greediness of the dragon with his treasure contrasts with the virtues of what would be considered a good king.
Beowulf is a very heroic character, with few flaws that are revealed until the end of the story. He is exceedingly strong, and this is shown in many ways. He possessed the raw strength needed to rip Grendel’s arm off barehanded. Grendel was a powerful monster capable of killing dozens of men in a single night and known as a horrible creature, yet its strength completely failed when faced with Beowulf. While other men had been mauled and crushed, Beowulf rather easily ripped an entire arm off of this monster, leaving it to die of its wounds.
She is seen as an ugly, brutal sea monster seeking revenge on the act of Beowulf killing her son. Grendel’s arm is also torn off by a door in the movie, rather than being ripped off during the fight with Beowulf. Another difference is that Beowulf does not stay in Hrothgar's town and marry his queen. As soon as Beowulf has killed both Grendel and Grendel's mother, he returns home
Beowulf gives him uttermost respect, greeting him properly and advancing in affection. The man finds the king of Danes to be such an influence that even one day when he comes to rule, Beowulf’s ways of leadership are similar to those of Hrothgar. Even with this in mind, the modern day film belittles this with the added in drama in order to create friction between characters. Within the film we watch as Beowulf questions Hrothgar's reason for killing Grendel's father. We see a side of Beowulf that begins to lose his respect for the king.

It is evident that in Beowulf, Beowulf himself has both the characteristics of human and monsters. Beowulf is not the only character who struggles with showing both human and monster characteristics. Beowulf is shown as a hero but has dragon like monstrous features that shows through the text, "And keeper of his people counted on Beowulf, On the warrior’s steadfastness and his word. Where as, Grendel is a monster that struggles with understanding the human identity. " Grendel set out for the lofty house, to see how the Ring-Danes were settling into it after their drink, and there he came upon them, a company of the best asleep from their feasting, insensible to pain and human sorrow.
Due to Beowulf’s natural strength, Grendel was taken by surprise and did not know what to do because no one has fought against him. This is explained in episode four, “Beowulf grasped his arm and sat up. The criminal knew he had not met in this middle-earth another with

In the book he attacked while everyone was drunk and passed out sleep. When Grendel attacked Beowulf was laying on the table naked. The soldiers tried to use weapons on Grendel; however, his skin was magically treated so no weapon could harm him.
