Within the original writing, King Hrothgar is portrayed as a wise and old ruler of the Danes, He stands to no mercy and enjoys a bloodbath if deemed necessary. In the epic Beowulf (Heaney) King Hrothgar is a man who categorizes into two, the good and the evil. The evil should be shown no mercy and the good is to be protected by the strongest. However, this characteristic and complexity continues only to be shown through the Beowulf epic and none of the modern day movie, Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarsson). Why that being? Today’s mindset of logic and values has changed greatly than years before these changes occur due to our mindset in culture differences throughout time. The movie throws in what is needed to give the character what today as seen …show more content…
Beowulf gives him uttermost respect, greeting him properly and advancing in affection. The man finds the king of Danes to be such an influence that even one day when he comes to rule, Beowulf’s ways of leadership are similar to those of Hrothgar. Even with this in mind, the modern day film belittles this with the added in drama in order to create friction between characters. Within the film we watch as Beowulf questions Hrothgar's reason for killing Grendel's father. We see a side of Beowulf that begins to lose his respect for the king. Instead of accepting the king’s wishes and accomplishing the task at hand, Beowulf continues to take notice of the witch and her views on the situation. Beowulf chooses to ignore Hrothgar's poor words about her, instead take into consideration that Grendel may have had reason for killing. Beowulf expects an answer to Hrothgar's action while demands for a reason to why he and his men should have Grendel killed. Unlike the epic, where the character Grendel is an evil being that should be eliminated, the movie gives Grendel a reason for being how he is. The change in the story and addition of characters takes away the fatherly figure that Beowulf should see in Hrothgar and replaces it with feelings of pity for Grendel. The film alternated the respect given to the king of Dane’s merely to add “more plot” for today's viewers. The …show more content…
Being seen as the wise king who sought to keep his people safe with power and knowledge for years, was turned into a soft, easily defeated, push around character in the modern day film. Years ago people were less complex; quick to do as they please while keeping their dignity strong. The differences between the two versions of the classic story of the hero Beowulf and the villain Grendel both have reason for their setup. The cultural values of today differ than from how they were years before. People today value pathos in characters, request heros who relate to pressure similar to themselves, and seek reasons for mistakes. The small adjustments to a character creates a large impact on the whole story helping viewers comprehend along with relating to what they view no matter the time
Beowulf is an anglo saxon story about an epic hero it's a story with a kingdom being terrorized by a scary monster and the story about the monster spreads to other kingdoms and then this hero heard about it and lend his hand to help them out and bring back the peace to that kingdom. Beowulf in this story is good and grendel the monster is evil and his mom is too they terrorize the hall in which they host their celebrations and at night the monster would come and slay and murder each and every person that was in that hall that night. Grendel is pure evil because he has no conscience , no quench for his thirst of blood and killing he simply does not care about the actions he commits. For that he is the epitome of all evil he does not care for
In the Epic Story Beowulf This movie, book drama Beowulf plays the Protagonist in the story who plays the hero of the Danes, and comes to assist Hrothgar who is King of the Danes. In the Movie and the Book, Beowulf aids the Danes as a favor after the Danes are attacked by Grendel who plays the Monster in the both the book and movie, who hated seeing the men celebrate their victories. In return of Beowulf going after Grendel after Grendel attacked the Danes, Beowulf went to kill Grendel. After the killing of Grendel, a strange woman who is known to be Grendel’s Mother comes to seek revenge on the killer who murdered her son. Grendel was known to have attacked innocent soldiers, however; Beowulf attacks, and kills Grendel whereas, his mother will soon take out revenge on his killer.
In Beowulf, the characterization of Grendel directly opposes his portrayal in Grendel. Because the point of view of Beowulf is third person omniscient, Grendel’s thoughts and emotions are not explicit. His philosophies present in Grendel do not appear in Beowulf. The citizens of Herot view Grendel as a wild, evil beast: “Till the monster stirred, that demon, that fiend/Grendel who haunted the moors, the wild/Marshes, and made his home in a hell” (Beowulf 101-103). The author of Beowulf created Grendel to be a malevolent and powerful being.
In the Beowulf poem, Beowulf is many things, Honest, Heroic, Strong, Loyal, and a gratifying provider. However, in the Beowulf movie he is not the person that you would expect like in the poem. Beowulf is almost the same as the poem Beowulf, he is not honest, he is only loyal to his own men, and exaggerates dramatically. Possible reasons why Hollywood changed these heroic attributes, people today expect more than just a story that contains pure good and pure evil. The Beowulf poem was created long, ago before modern time, which people then had a shorter crave of story.
Beowulf was making sure that they knew he was going to fight Grendel with no fear of losing. Grendel was an evil creature that was all about him-self, he wanted to seek revenge on the people who hurt him. Grendel also had no support from his mother which caused him to want to kill. Grendel was an evil creature that lived in Herot, he is all about himself and didn’t care for others. Throughout the story you can see that Grendel does not speak to anyone but when he tries to they do not understand him.
How does point of view affect the theme of Grendel? John Gardner’s Grendel reveals the opposite side of the story depicted in Beowulf by making Grendel the narrator. Grendel, a monster, is the only source of information the reader has, which forces the reader to gain trust in Grendel’s thoughts and memories. Although Grendel and Beowulf share the same storyline, but switch perspectives, the themes happen to change, solely because the reader reaches a deeper level of connection with Grendel by discovering the similarities humans have with him and pities his loneliness.
Beowulf only went by what everyone said, but in reality Beowulf is the monster for not even having the conscious to try to keep Grendel from being killed. Beowulf was the monster not like everyone Believe that Grendel was. Beowulf has qualities that a monster has such as , has no mercy, ruthless and only wants money and fame. The real monster is Beowulf not Grendel like everyone
In the epic poem, Beowulf, there are clear distinctions between an epic hero and a monster. Beowulf is the prime example of a epic hero possessing characteristics such as superior strength, courage, and loyalty. On the other hand, Grendel and Grendel’s mother are characteristized as evil and immoral based off of their actions. These characteristics are presented throughout the poem, and monsters are given grotesque, hideous appearances to further prove that they are evil. After Beowulf kills Grendel, Grendel’s mother reaction revealed how the full presentation of a character can allow readers to react differently than before and even sympathized with them.
In the epic poem Beowulf, the protagonist, Beowulf, faces three “monsters” at different times in his life. The poem begins with Grendel, a monster who attacks only in the dark of night, tormenting the kingdom of Hrothgar. The last two sections of the epic detail the conquering by Beowulf of Grendel’s mother and the dragon. The battle between the monsters and Beowulf represent the theme of good versus evil in the poem, as well as the fusion of pagan and Christian ideals in the changing Germanic society. Grendel’s mother’s actions directly juxtapose the role of a woman in this time period, and the greediness of the dragon with his treasure contrasts with the virtues of what would be considered a good king.
Grendel in the novel is different from the Grendel shown in the epic poem Beowulf because Grendel shows a different side of himself. Grendel in the novel is much more complex, whereas in the epic poem, he is much more epic and destructive. However, in both the novel and the epic poem, the reader is able to see how short tempered he is in both. This helps the reader get a better insight of how Grendel actually feels throughout the novel rather than the way he is perceived in the poem, because it takes into perspective on how he lives his life and feels throughout the entire war. Grendel is much more epic and destructive in the poem, than the novel.
Thus allowing the reader to interpret the tone better because of how Grendel expresses his feeling. On the other hand, Beowulf gives the reader a generalization of how he sees society. Plain and simple. Beowulf only sees the world as good and evil, black and white, there is no gray area, causing the tone to be bland and boring due to no detail or unexpected turns. Beowulf overlooks society as a horrible place that only " the vicious raids and ravages of Grendel, his long and unrelenting feud, nothing but war...young and old were hunted down by the death shadow" (line 151-160).
An Understanding on Beowulf: An Analysis on How Beowulf Contrasts Good Versus Evil Beowulf is the typical story of good versus evil.in this poem, good is portrayed by our hero, Beowulf. Evil, on the other hand, does not have one representation, but rather several, most are in form of monsters. To be good, you need to be the opposite of what evil is and what it does. Beowulf does that several times throughout the whole poem. Grendel, the first monster Beowulf encountered, attacked because he was exiled form the rest of society and probably felt angry and jealous out of the peoples joy(87).he was probably jealous of the happiness of others, and like many people, he decided that if he was not happy, no one should be happy.
Beowulf is the main hero in the poem, and he travels to the land of the Danes to help King Hrothgar get rid of the monster Grendel. After having slain Grendel, there is still a huge crisis present. Grendel’s mother comes to the Hall of Heorot to avenge the death of her kinsmen by killing Aeschere. Aeschere is one of Hrothgar’s most trusted advisors, and his loss bear’s heavy on Hrothgar’s heart. In the culture displayed in Beowulf, the bonds of friendship and kinsmanship are very important to the characters.

evil. Beowulf is the archetype warrior hero whose one purpose is to defend the innocent and vulnerable of his people. Whether it is the devil incarnated, the mother of the monster, or a fire-breathing dragon, he is capable of defending the Danes and Geats. Without his heroism and bravery, these people would’ve faced certain death under a weakened, but good, King Hrothgar. Beowulf uses the same selflessness as the military that defends our country, and is as great of a warrior as each and every one of the soldiers in the United States armed services.
