The principles of Sir Robert Peel are important for America today, and help shape todays modern police forces. Peels principles help keep order and peace to the police force of America. Peel drafted one of the first police bills in 1828, to improve the police in the Metropolis, it was passed in 1829 ( ). There are nine total principles in total that help guide the law enforcement. The first principle describes the basic mission to why police exist. The main reason we need police according the Peels first principle is to prevent crime and disorder. This is an important principle for all law enforcement. If the police did not prevent crime and disorder, then there would not be a reason for a police force at all. This is an important concept because it explains that officers should not follow society and pressure from the public and media but follow the laws that our country. This a good thing to have when dealing with persuasive criminals and individuals. Both officers and civilians benefit from this principle because it protects both parties. Officers also need to know the laws, so they can stay away form trouble and not be deceived by public persuasion. This is a good thing to have in America today, because many criminals will say anything to get out of punishment. Also, it good for civilians know the laws of the land as well, in case an officer goes against them, so the individual can protect them self’s and educate if …show more content…
The principle explains that police should use only the amount of physical force necessary to restore order and protect public if using warning or persuasion is not working on an individual. This is important because it is not ok for anyone to use physical force in not completely necessary. If using physical force is not required, then it should always be avoided. Although, if an officer must use physical force than it should be the least amount necessary to protect the individual and surrounding public. For modern police officers this an important principle, this is not always followed and not following this principle causes many unnecessary tragedies and conflicts. This principle should be used by the general public as well, in case of an incident, to only use self-defense if absolutely necessary. The seventh principle of peel is a really important for everyone to remember. This principal helps people understand that there is not much difference between the public and officers. The principal explains that the police are the public and the public are the police, the only difference is that police are payed and make it their full-time duty for modern police officers and public this is important for people to remember because of big divide between the
Summary In the journal article, “State-Created Danger” leading author Jeffrey J. Noble discusses the controversial issue of whether or not police officers should be held accountable for reckless actions. Noble begins his essay by explaining how police officers often encounter dangerous scenarios with “little or no warning, and no opportunity to develop a comprehensive plan. The police are expected to intervene quickly and make what are often citical decisions” (p. 481). Officers have such a challenging task when dealing with split-second decisions and the author points out that it is difficult to scrutnize the actions of an officer who is expected to produce nothing short of perfection in these kind of circumstances.
The first rule that is presupposed by the action of Officer Jankowski charging Samantha with a DUI can be formulated as; Officers should enforce the law no matter who the accused is. The alternative rule that can be presupposed by Officer Jankowski’s action of letting Samantha off with a warning would be formulated as; Officers should take into consideration who the accused is when enforcing the law. Now, it must be determined who the proper audience for the rule is. All people would be effected by this rule, specifically people who are prone to committing illegal acts. In this case Samantha, her family, Officer Jankowski, the police department, and other citizens driving on the same road as Samantha would be effected by the rules.
Number five was addressed simply to manage the principles that go on in a police department. This set up a centralized command and control for the type of personnel they tend to acquire as years progress. Then there is the last idea of creating special units to do different tasks that sprang up as crime happened. As police departments experience different kinds of crimes different units were created to handle the specific types of crimes. Now this movement had its pros and cons.
This means that police should treat everybody with respect and be courteous. If police deny and ridicule people, they are going against the constitution. Amendment 10 ¬ States’ rights- This amendment means that any power not given to the federal government is given to the people or the states. ¬ How do you know when federal forces should step in?
While these are tricky issues to understand at first, this manual will guide you towards what a society should learn and understand just as we Book People have. Individuals should conform to the law when it supports the common good of the people but rebel against the law when it infringes on basic human rights. Conformity leads to a sense of powerlessness,
Many states have Peace Officer’s Bill of Rights and it is argued that the Peace Officer’s Bill of Rights makes it very difficult to discipline or remove bad officers; only other officers many times judge officers, and it makes an investigator’s job of
There are other reasons why polices officers used excessive force and lethal force rather than just their own decisions. As it was anteriority mentioned, the community is not trusting any more in police officers. Surveys in recent years with minority groups – Latinos and African American- suggest that the confidence in police is low. In 2014 this perspective was expanded to all American races across the country. Community gave “low marks to the police departments around the country… for misconduct, using appropriated amount of force, and treating racial and ethnics groups equally” (Wehbey, 2015).
The duty of a police officer requires a special type of individuals with a unique ability to assume different policing roles and responsibilities. Law enforcement officers are required to perform duties that set them apart from the majority of the population. In a recent article addressing repeated legal test failures by Baltimore Police academy recruits Sgt Josh Rosenblatt stated “We’re giving them a badge and a gun tomorrow, the right to take someone’s liberty, ultimately the right to take someone’s life if it calls for it, and they have not demonstrated they can meet basic constitutional and legal standards” (Rector). Throughout this research paper, discusses the different training types required to create the skills to be a police officer.
When it comes to policing there is a huge struggle power struggle between individual rights and public order. You want to keep individual rights, but you also want to keep public order while keeping the public safe. It may seem hard to keep the balance between these two, but doing so is of utter importance. Here are some examples of why it can be hard to balance individual rights and public order when dealing with policing.
DNA Profiling antithetical to right to privacy. INTRODUCTION The ambit of privacy can get to the extent of your saliva, spit or anything from which your DNA can be traced down. While it can be interpreted as standing for ones beliefs, a police officer must uphold a high moral code in accordance to the society which is being served. The ethics to which police officers holds themselves, must include the character traits demonstrated in personal life, in addition to operating as public servants. If an officer is deemed untrustworthy at home, they cannot be trusted to work legally within the police department. Honesty within policing is just as important, where failing to admit a mistake can weaken a reputation and call previous cases into question. Although these traits can be trained into an individual, integrity must be developed personally before it can be applied
Peel’s third principle is police must secure the willing cooperation of the public in voluntary observance of law to be able to secure and maintain the respect of the public (Dempsey & Forst, 2016). This principle is evident today by statutory laws that are passed to secure and protect the public from harm. For instance, laws that govern speeding are enacted to protect and safeguard the commuting public from reckless acts committed by negligent drivers. Peel’s fourth and sixth principles are related to the use of force administered
When it comes to having and being able to maintain a strong moral code, front line patrol officers are the perfect example of what law enforcement requires. To ensure front line patrol officers maintain a strong moral code, they must be able to keep their integrity on and off duty. Officers should have this characteristic before they are hired and should be open for the police academy to repair and strengthen them. Law enforcement requires not only physical strength within the policing work field but also strength within one’s values and their ethical as well as moral beliefs. ‘’Values is the term given to those ideas, behaviors, and actions that are important to us.
Police organizational structures are entities of two or more people who cooperate to accomplish an objective. This type of structure must be parallel so that it can be effective in achieving the overall goal of protecting and helping the public. For the past several years police agencies have proceeded through a traditional structure but more recently that structure has started to evolve. Traditional structures are based upon principles such as specialization, hierarchy, chain of command, rules and regulations, and official working capacity. Principles such as this allow the structure to work effectively.
