The Electoral College is a terrible system designed for electing the president of the United States. For the people who do not really know or understand the Electoral College, it is a body of people who ultimately decide who wins the presidential election. Each state holds an election for the popular vote. The candidate who wins of the state's popular vote gets all the states allowed electoral votes. How many electoral votes a state gets is determined by the population of the state. So New York, a state with 54,556 square miles of land and a population of 19,795,791, has 29 electoral votes while Alaska, a state with 663,268 square miles of land and a population of 738,432, has 3 electoral votes.
The Electoral college was founded in 1787. Reason being, people were spread out and could not really find out who the presidential candidates were or what they stood for. So the Founding Fathers formed The Electoral College, so the …show more content…

Do you think that separating Mill Spring, Columbus, and Tryon and giving them a certain amount of votes based on their population would be fair? Well, let's take a look at the different populations of these towns. If Tryon has the good majority of Polk County’s population, the people running for office would campaign more there because that would be the best place to gain votes. Columbus would be the second most campaigned area, with Millspring being the last. So, how would the people of Mill Spring feel if their votes didn’t matter as much as Tryon or Columbus? Imagine the protesting for equality! Why are states such as Alaska not protesting their votes do not matter as much as anyone else's? So why not get rid of The Electoral College? Why not base all elections off the popular vote? Maybe it’s because people aren’t as informed on the severity of this failure of an election system. Who exactly does the electoral college hurt? The answer to that question is everyone it doesn’t
