The Electoral College was created when the small states feared that large states would be more powerful in determining presidency. Therefore, the Electoral College was created and is considered to be a technique that makes it easier to elect a president and a vice president. The way it works is that each and every state gets electors. The amount of electors is the sum of the number of members the House and the Senate has. The states decided on how many electors are chosen. The Constitution felt it was the states responsibility to decide on the amount of electors. Overall, the Electoral College is made up of a total of 538 electors. In order to win the presidential election this candidate is required to attain more than half of the votes. A few criticisms the Electoral College holds is that it has outlives its usefulness and that the campaigns place more focus on the swing states. Although many believe we should not use the Electoral College as a method for choosing a president, this method has been used for decades and it should continue to be used. For those, that want to put an end to this method of electing a president and a vice president it will not be easy. The Electoral College was created to make it easier in an organized manner on deciding who the president will be. A reason why the Electoral College exists is because it is in the Constitution. It is stated in Article 2 Section 1. Next, it can be said we are a Republic meaning we don't directly represent but rather represent indirectly. We have representatives that choose and represent for us. Again, in presidential elections we don't elect our president but we elect our representatives. Also, shutting down the method, Electoral College, most definitely would not change the problems of campaign focus. If the Electoral College were to be not used anymore, all the elections would then be decided by court. That would simply be chaotic and …show more content…
Even though, today, many disagree and feel the Electoral College only make things complicated and that it has outlived its usefulness. Nonetheless, those that are against the Electoral College will have a hard time trying to change it because this is written in the Constitution. The Electoral College simply made the process of electing a president and vice president much easier although it has loop holes. The loop hole being that in the future we may be faced in a situation where the president and the vice president can be from two different political parties and forced to work together. The Electoral College consists of the votes citizens make. Nowadays, the young generations are not aware of how important it is to go out to a poll and vote. Without the votes, voter turnout will continue to decline. The citizens should be more aware of what is going on, fight for their beliefs and issues, and make a
I think we should keep the Electoral College. Electoral College is defined in our textbook as; “An unofficial term that refers to the electors who cast the states’ electoral votes” (Patterson, T.E., 2013). Electoral voting is tied in with the states popular voting. Choosing electoral college adds to the cohesiveness of the nation by obliging an appropriation of popular support to be elected President, improves the status of minority interests, contributes to the political dependability of the country by promising a two-party system, and keeps up an elected arrangement of government and representation (Kimberling, W.C., 2008). I think that the Electoral College system is a big part of the cohesiveness of our country and it requires the distribution
Another pro to the electoral college system is it helps keep a two party system in this country. If it were an election based on popular vote some say it would be chaos because of how many people would be running for president. The electoral college lets the winning candidate get the majority of the vote In the 1992 polls, Bill Clinton only got 42 percent of the vote, but with Ross Perot’s influence, he won the majority of the electoral college. Ross perot was famous for splitting the republican vote in this election he was a billionaire that ran as a independent. This is one of the reasons George Bush sir didn't have a chance in this election.
The electoral college can either be abolished or changed. With it being abolished all the power would go straight the American citizens, if changed it will allow the smaller states to have a say. By changing the electoral college system it will allow representatives of the people, smaller states
The Electoral College is unconstitutional and should be abolished because it gives too much power to states with over 20 electoral votes and ignores the voice of the people. Not many people are fully aware of what the Electoral College is, but just 538 people decide who will be the next president. Each
A debate that has existed in American politics for centuries has flared up again. The debate in question is whether we should keep our Electoral College for the purpose of electing our President or abolish it and elect our Presidents through a popular vote. Those who seek to abolish the Electoral College cite instances -recent and past- in which Presidential Candidates have won the popular vote yet lost the majority of the Electoral College. They also argue that the undemocratic philosophy behind the Electoral College, the thought that the American people aren’t competent enough to choose their own Commander in Chief, is an outdated remnant of a backwards past that has no place in modern society and law. Those who seek to preserve the Electoral
Beginning with modern technology, people are able to access information to make educated decisions, therefore the Electoral College isn’t seemed to be essential. Also, “Electoral College are now selected by the political parties and they are expected to vote along party lines regardless of their own opinions about the candidates”(procon.org). Meaning that their decisions are based on their party system alone, and the electorate personal opinion does not count. In addition to this, some may agree that the general people's opinion is being disregarded. This was seen in the most recent election in 2016.
Quiz #3 The Electoral College is a complicated and confusing system. It was created by the Constitution and is extremely outdated. The Founders wanted the the president to be selected by the elite of the nation instead of by the people.
The Meaning Behind the Electoral College The United States of America is one of the most powerful countries this world has ever seen and currently is the world’s superpower. The President of the United States has a very important job for this reason. Not only is he a very influential figure around the world, but he serves a very important role when it comes to domestic affairs. This is the reason there is a very distinct way of choosing the president of the United States. The electoral college has been the primary decision maker of who becomes president since 1787 (Kimberling).
All through the history of the United States of America, many people have discussed the abolishment of the Electoral College. For many reasons, some believe it is what makes our country have the type of government we have, some believe that it's what limits the power of the government, and many people such as Mitch McConnell believes it is what gives us our freedom and prosperity. While these are valid arguments there is a multitude of reasons to why the electoral college should be abolished. Such as there is only a need for twelve states in order to become the president, popular vote of the people for president can still lose, and the Swing states are given too much power and attention compared to that of the other states. This is why I believe in the abolishment of the Electoral College.
The Electoral College is here and here to stay because it's a great way to elect the most powerful man in the country. It's a fair way to elect the next President because the people elect the electors of your state. Which anyone really can be an elector, besides from the members of Congress, and the candidate that wins the most votes becomes the next President. So now think of a better way to elect your next President, which there isn't. The Electoral College is the best way to pick the president.
Although there are many objections, obviously the electoral college should be abolished. The electoral college is just a ticking time bomb of politics. Why let the electors ruin our right to vote? When a president is elected, think, were they voted by you, or the electors?
The Electoral College is a system, not a spot. The building up fathers developed it. The inspiration driving the Electoral College is to be a tradeoff between choice of the president by the vote of Congress and the surely understood vote of the all inclusive community The Electoral College system contains the decision of the voters, the meeting of the voters where they vote for President and Vice President, and the numbering of the constituent votes by Congress (Jerry Fresia February 28, 2006). The Electoral College includes 538 voters.
The electoral college was established by our founding fathers in the constitution as a compromise between the election of the President. The Electoral College was spelled out in article 2 of the constitutions in terms of the process on how that works. The electoral College it's an example of an important word. Indirect democracy; in which means that we do not choose our president directly. Why do we do that?
Several years after the United States came to be, the Constitutional Convention met to determine how the new nation should govern itself. The delegates saw that it was crucial to have a president and vice president, but the delegates did not want these offices to reflect how the colonies were treated under the British rule. The delegates believed that the president’s power should be limited, and that he should be chosen through the system known as the Electoral College. The Electoral College is a body of people who represent the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the electing of the president and vice president. Many citizens feel that the Electoral College goes against our nation’s principle of representative democracy, while others
Electoral college has been with us since the birth of the constitution, and to this day we are still using this type of system to this day. The Electoral College is a system that the United States uses to elect our upcoming presidents and vice presidents. Each state has electors equal to their senate member and house of representatives, however who ever gets the highest popular vote in the state gets the electoral vote. The issue is the Electoral College do not give votes to the people, but to the states. Which has some unfair consequences.
