Essay Should Community College Be Tuition Free

Obama’s Free Community College Plan is a bill waiting to be processed through Congress enabling post-secondary education to be a little or no cost to students. The bill consists of the federal government and states splitting the cost of subsidizing tuition, leaving the students to pay zero. The estimated cost of the Obama’s plan is $80 billion in just over ten years. States would pay 25 percent of the bills while the government pays the remaining 75 percent.

A lot of people want to learn, but don’t think that going to a university is right for them. This may be for financial reasons or just because they think that it’s too much for them. This is where community colleges come in. Instead of focusing on finances or background, they accept people and teach them where they’re at. This is similar to the speech made by Sir Ken Robinson called “Changing Education Paradigms” when he talks about the education system needing to change their priorities.

Currently, student debt in the United States is at an all-time high, with the average student graduating from college with tens of thousands of dollars in debt. By making community colleges and trade schools free, students can avoid accumulating large amounts of debt, allowing them to start their careers and lives without any financial burden from their education. Thirdly, free community colleges and trade schools can provide training and education in essential industries such as healthcare and skilled trades. These industries are in high demand and provide excellent employment opportunities, but students may not have the resources to attend a four-year university to receive the necessary training.

Now, where would all of the money come from? Well, the answer is taxes. Like many other educational programs in the United States of America, a majority of funding comes from the federal government. In fact, “In the fiscal year 2017… state spending (on major higher education programs) was $87 billion, and local funding (mostly to community colleges) was $10.5 billion” (Community College Research Center, 2022). Now when you apply that information to the fact that much of that money comes from taxpayers, it should cause people to slow down and think about what free community college would entail.

Education is widely regarded as a key factor in the economic and social development of a country. With the extremely rapid development of the society, in order to enhance their competitiveness, increasing young people choose to accept higher education. Yet, there are different attitudes about whether students should pay or not. Some people regard education as a basic right, which should therefore be provided free, while others think the individual student should have to shoulder some of the costs of his or her education. However, it is still an issue for students to cough up that money. The idea of making community college free to any student in America has been a dream for low income students for a while. President Obama’s desire to make the tuition of community college to everyone in the nation would only make it difficult for students to get a free education, limit them to essential resources, and discourage students from applying to four year universities. Granting free community college tuition to incoming freshmen will draw “more students to already crowded community colleges”. Along with the overcrowded campuses, a very long waiting list will soon form making it just as competitive to get into a four year university.

Most students are eager to leave home immediately after graduating high school. However, the reality is, most students aren’t ready to start at a four-year university. Community college is an easy way to obtain basic classes for less money, give students who aren’t ready to leave home a chance to become independent while still living at home, and for those who are first generation college students make the transition easier while allowing the same students to figure out whether or not a university will be a good next step. According to College Atlas, Money is the number one reason high school graduates don’t end up furthering their education.

However, it would be far more beneficial if the American government simply provided free tuition at community colleges than have students go through a program. In conclusion, there are several emotional and logical appeals to support free community college tuition. This proposal will give more opportunities for many people and allow them to have a better future. President Obama has provided Americans the opportunity to advance their careers and education.

Long ago, there have been massive arguments about whether or not community college should be free. Nowadays, a college education has become fundamental in today's society. As stated earlier, students success will decrease and they will not learn to develop good habits like being resilient. Additionally, people who pay for their college degree are put at risk of losing their job opportunity to a person who got their college degree for free. Furthermore, free public colleges are not free for taxpayers because they pay for students enrolled in these programs, which can also be other people’s children, rather than their own. Free public college education hurts people rather than helping people.
