In “Crime and Punishment: The saga of Richie Parker” published in Sports Illustrated, Gary Smith helps to explain just how many people are affected by a single sexual assault case. He does this in a very unique style by giving 12 sections explaining the incident from different points of view and the effects of a single crime. One person affected was Jill Agostino, the sports copy editor for Newsday. Her unnamed colleague had given her a copy of an article he was writing on Richie Parker and called asking if she liked it. Little did he know, stories like his were keeping her up at night, reminding her of the time she was raped nine years earlier.

The reference to the articles being published and other examples are used as a reference and reasoning technique to show and build credibility toward the movement, its existence, and support from many. The reason technique is used to build credibility towards the article and the primary argument that the movement is being misused. By providing this examples, it justifies the argument that the author has presented. The reference is also showing the audience that there are many stories out there and again building on the issue that sexual assault is happening all around us. What is even more shocking being the number of women to this day that gets abused. The characters, especially men, in Courage Under Fire and Boys Don’t Cry do not accept or respect the characters who have different genders. They believe that they are better than the other characters, just because they are men. The men in Courage Under Fire either see Captain Karen Emma Walden as a hero and someone who deserves the Congressional Medal of Honor, or as someone who does not deserve the award just because she is a woman. “In the old days, strong sturdy women were almost admired” (Silko, 66), this quote from Yellow Woman and the Beauty of the Spirit show that just like the strong Laguna Pueblo women are admired, Captain Walden is also admired by multiple men in the film.

A book that I recently read that showed a reflection of my self-understanding was Missoula by Jon Krakauer because it extended my perspective on women’s safety on college campuses. The book Missoula shares stories of five women who were sexually assaulted at the University of Montana, Missoula and follows their cases all the way to trial. As a girl who has always been told that a college education is necessary to succeed in life, the idea that colleges arent safe for me felt like a secret that I wasnt allowed to know until I experienced it for myself. Reading the statistics and seeing how all of the rapists walked away unpunished strengthened my understanding of the fact that sexual assault is a normal occurance on college campuses.

Maria Cabrera Documentary Reflection The Hunting Ground is a documentary film targeting the frequent sexual assaults on college campuses in the United States. Colleges across the United States have failed to meet justice for victims with confrontations. The film is concentrated on Annie. E. Clark and Andrea Pino, two graduates of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who decided to file a complaint about their assaults while they were attending the University.

According to the textbook, date or acquaintance rape occurs when “the victim and offender know one another and are engaged in friendly, non-combative interaction up until the attack,” (Doerner, 2021). These types of crimes are especially prevalent on college campuses in the United States and the documentary alleges that universities and colleges across the country take significant steps to cover up these crimes in order to maintain a certain image. I think this documentary is a very important one to watch for everyone, not just people taking the “Victimization” course. Learning about a crime that is especially prevalent in our community and understanding the context and controversies surrounding it can be very eye-opening.

It looks scary how vulnerable the survivor can be at the time of assault. However, as long as the matter of violence is associated, the students at college campuses are safer than their non-college mates. Some training and education has been administrated to the students for awareness about the violence and sexual assaults. Even, with increased training and education, most of the college campuses have much longer way to go for decreasing the intensity and number of assaults and the incidents have immense negative impact on the society and people around us.

Unfortunately, not every student will have a positive mindset or respect of others. Nowadays, the most assaults happen on a college campus and this is a serious issue that can be prevented. I hope that during my undergraduate years at George Mason University I will be able to investigate the problem affecting many colleges that is date rape drugs. Rape on college campuses is a horrifying epidemic that our country is facing. According to healthresearchfunding.org “Up to 90% of college campus rapes occur through date rape incidents.” Almost every day on the news there is a new story about a woman who was a victim of rape or sexual assault, and most of the time the perpetrator gets away hands free. A major reason why date rape drugs are commonly used is because they are easily slipped in to drinks at college parties and are undetectable by the victim.

Think rape and sexual assault cases are being handled seriously? 1 in 5 women will be sexually assaulted while pursuing a higher level education. Even when sexual cases are reported, colleges suppress them, deliberately deny victims their trauma, and encourage the victims to "keep quiet" in order to preserve their institution 's reputation/brand. I recommend everyone (especially parents and future/current college students) to watch The Hunting Ground, an outstanding documentary regarding this current epidemic, found on Netflix and other sources. I couldn 't help but become infuriated while watching this documentary.
