The Alchemist is a famous book written by Paulo Coelho. It’s about a shepherd named Santiago who travels from his homeland Spain to the Pyramids in Egypt. He does this to find a treasure he was told about. Along his hard journey, he meets some people along the way like a gypsy woman and a king in disguise who all direct him towards his quest. He doesn’t let the obstacles stop him toward his goal and eventually he finds his treasure. He found love with a woman in the desert, a treasure chest buried under an old tree in an old abandoned church where he first was, and a lesson learned about how the world and the people surrounding him have affected him in his life. I think the main theme of this story is self-discovery and how it can affect one’s life in the real world. Self-identity can affect you and others. I think this is a critical thing when finding self-discovery. An example from the text relating to this is “‘Why do we listen to our hearts’ the boy asked when they made camp that day. ‘Because, wherever your heart is, that is where you’ll find your treasure.’ “The alchemist is trying to tell Santiago that listening to his heart can lead him to what he is destined to find, his treasure. Sometimes we have doubts and feel like trying to pursue our personal legends isn’t worth it. Santiago then tells the alchemist: “My heart is a traitor. It doesn’t want me to go on.” The alchemist replied with a smart answer and said “That makes sense. Naturally, it’s afraid that, in pursuing your dream, you might lose everything you’ve won.” A fear of uncertainty is what Santiago is feeling and he worries he’ll lose everything he’s accomplished so far. Our hearts and inner thoughts help lead us to a goal or destination but, they also have some skepticism and worry if your goal isn’t possible to

It is the longest and most intimate of all relationships we will ever have but the problem is self doubt that happens because we constantly neglect ourselves ,Self-doubt brings fear, such as the fear of failure, of the dark, of being out of control, of not being good enough., and the one we take most for granted. Yet it 's extraordinary how often we feel as if we 're living inside a stranger. That’s the fear that everyone has ,a fear of being rejected ,fear of being broken ,that’s how the story connects and that’s what we find common between ourselves and Santiago ,at one point he gave up ,he doubted himself ,isn’t it what we do every time we fail but he didn’t give up ,he wanted to test his boundaries. That’s what life wants to teach us. The book -The Alchemist makes you think twice about are you giving you dreams your everything or are you loyal towards yourself, and the question lies
When Santiago meets the Alchemist, he transforms into a new and improved person. With this, he realizes many things and confesses that his love for a woman named Fatima is worth a lot more than the treasure his needs to find. The alchemist
Santiago's temptation is when he has the choice whether or not to stay with Fatima and abandon his Personal Legend. After leaving Fatima he has a difficult time coping with the separation, even if Fatima is a woman of the desert, who knows he will return. The Alchemist offers him a sole piece of advice, “love never keeps a man from pursuing his Personal Legend.” (120) Santiago’s heart is aching for the loving arms of Fatima. He realizes that he needs to focus on what he needs, pursuing his Personal Legend and not what he desires to be with Fatima.
The Alchemist- How do you manage the expectations of the outside world versus who you would like to be? In The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho shows to his readers that Santiago’s way of life is incorrect and that Santiago should change his ways because the expectations of the outside world are higher than what he is currently meeting. The world expects Santiago to be more than what he is now. The people around Santiago think that he is not contributing to the world enough especially someone that is very knowledgeable.
Chemist recounts the tale of a youthful shepherd named Santiago who is ready to discover a fortune beyond anything he could ever imagine. En route, he figures out how to tune in to his heart and, all the more essentially, understands that his fantasies, or his Individual Legend, are not recently his but rather part of the Soul of the Universe. Santiago is an unassuming shepherd whose wants are few– he needs to be allowed to wander with his sheep, to have some wine in his wineskin and a book in his pack. Destiny intercedes, in any case, as the repeating long for an awesome treasure concealed a great many miles away at the base of the Egyptian Pyramids.
… The boy was shaking with fear, but the alchemist helped him out of the tent. … the alchemist continued, “usually the threat of death makes people a lot more aware of their lives.”” (Coelho 140 6 8, Coelho 142 2) Just like before Santiago is afraid and doesn't know what to do in a situation of adversity. But he does not give up he perseveres and developes
He is setting himself up for destruction. Destruction of his heart and all of his emotions. Why plan your life around a girl, all that 's going to happen is you are going to get hurt in the end, that’s what always happens. Santiago also is too trustworthy of people. In his adventures he comes across many, some who do him great good and more who do him great destruction.
Introduction The concept of identity has been a notion of significant interest not just to sociologists and psychologists, but also to individuals found in a social context of perpetually trying to define themselves. Often times, identities are given to individuals based on their social status within a certain community, after the assessment of predominant characteristics that said individual has. However, within the context of an ethnicity, the concept identity is most probably applied to all members of the ethnical group, and not just one individual. When there is one identity designated for the entire group, often times the factor of “individuality” loses its significance, especially when referring to the relationship between the ethnic
During the whole story Santiago is trying to find his personal legend, he is trying to find his purpose in life. Therefore in the Alchemist, the most important thing is personal legend. Everything is based off Santiago’s personal legend, if he wouldn’t of became a shepherd the book wouldn’t be all about him following his personal legend and trying to figure out what his was. Beginning with the question, how to understand the concept of ‘Identity’, the first thing we need to understand is that, at an individual level, the formation of identity involves a number of factors including the fact that how we see ourselves and how the world interprets us. When it comes to the formation of identity, we have to think in terms of such formation at the level of self and its implications at social level are ignored. If we look at Erving Goffman’s work on the question of formation of identity, he talks about identity in link with the self and the society. To him, identity relies on our own consciousness and on active presentation of self, along with the notion of thoughts about which we are not conscious, i.e. the unintentional
Identity can be a powerful tool by which we see and judge our environment. In many cases, we often remain unaware of how our identity, chosen by us or not, influence how we intersect with our environment, as well as how deeply we analyze it. It is important not only to assess our own identity and how it may change the way we see things, but also to extend our knowledge and perception to work and groups that share our identity and perspective, as well as oppose it, or simply look through a variety of different lenses to examine their environment. Only in this way can we truly decipher who we are, how we identify with the world around us, and how this identity is affecting the way we view things. Both of the chosen works addresses significant
