After being robbed, Santiago finds himself of needing money so he finds a job and works for a man by selling glass. After he gets enough money he goes back on his journey. He joins a group called the caravan and learns a lot from being there. His setback from his journey made him realize how he has to pay more attention to things and makes sure not to repeat the same things he has done. This setback is called the “ approach” and it is pretty much used as a preparation for the big upcoming events in the journey. When Santiago meets the Alchemist, he transforms into a new and improved person. The main character in ‘The Alchemist,” Santiago is a boy who was set off to follow his “personal legend” as said in the novel. A personal legend is a person 's goal to attain a dream also known as a destiny. Throughout the novel Santiago, the boy was in search of his destiny through a long journey to make his dreams of seeing the world come true. The sole purpose to navigate through his journey from dreams to reality was to achieve his destiny, in order for it to occur he had to change his routine and began to follow a course that changed throughout his journey to something greater than expected. In many novels characters change their course in order to attain a dream.
The Importance of Perseverance At many times in people’s lives, they consider giving up. This is also true for Santiago, the protagonist in Paulo Coelho's fantasy novel The Alchemist. Santiago is on a journey to find a hidden treasure he saw in a dream. Along this journey he continues to contemplate whether he should just give up, or continue his adventure.
Santiago's temptation is when he has the choice whether or not to stay with Fatima and abandon his Personal Legend. After leaving Fatima he has a difficult time coping with the separation, even if Fatima is a woman of the desert, who knows he will return. The Alchemist offers him a sole piece of advice, “love never keeps a man from pursuing his Personal Legend.” (120) Santiago’s heart is aching for the loving arms of Fatima. He realizes that he needs to focus on what he needs, pursuing his Personal Legend and not what he desires to be with Fatima.
Santiago then tells the alchemist: “My heart is a traitor. It doesn’t want me to go on.” The alchemist replied with a smart answer and said “That makes sense. Naturally, it’s afraid that, in pursuing your dream, you might lose everything you’ve won.” A fear of uncertainty is what Santiago is feeling and he worries he’ll lose everything he’s accomplished so far.

When the alchemist presented Santiago with the choice to stay at the oasis, or leave and achieve his personal legend, Santiago struggled to find the correct answer. The alchemist let Santiago know that if he stayed in the oasis, for the first year his marriage would be great and so would his marriage. Over time Santiago and Fatima would drift apart, and he would loose his job. But on the other hand, if he decided to voyage into the desert in seek of finding his personal legend he worried that he might loose Fatima. He thought, "...
The alchemist travels with Santiago until an Optic monastery where he changes lead into gold by using the Philosopher’s stone. He gives Santiago some gold and sends him off alone. Finally he reaches the pyramids but is met by two men who mock him in his belief of a dream. Before leaving one of the men tell Santiago of his own dream.

During the whole story Santiago is trying to find his personal legend, he is trying to find his purpose in life. Therefore in the Alchemist, the most important thing is personal legend. Paul Coelho uses the characters Melchizedek, Santiago’s father, the baker, the candy merchant, the crystal merchant, Fatima, and the Englishman to explore the theme to really live and experience life, the characters need to realize their Personal Legend through their own personal experiences or through others and their experiences.
In the beginning of the story, Santiago describes a merchant’s daughter he met the year before, and her name is Fatima. He explains how pretty she is, and how infatuated he is with her. Flash-forwarding to present day, Santiago visits the town again, and goes to a Gypsy to have a dream interpreted. He is told to go to Egypt for a certain treasure, but gets distracted along the way because of Fatima. At one moment in the book, Santiago almost decides to stay with her rather than looking for the treasure.
