Self Control In Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club

Has anyone else ever wondered how many sane people have been misdiagnosed or even committed to an institution unnecessarily? In chapter three; On Being Sane in Insane Places, in the novel Opening Skinners Box, Lauren Slater has written about experiments conducted by psychologist David Rosenhan in 1972 and again by herself sometime in the 2000’s.

‘Sometimes Gladness’, a collection of poems by Bruce Dawe mention a variety of references to Australian culture; although often looked over by the reader. Without the use of stereotypical behaviours or even language known universally, the naming of certain places known to Australia in ‘Drifters’ and ‘Revire of a swimmer’ gets muddled with the overall message of the poems. Moreover, even when Australian slang is incorporated into the poem, a larger audience can relate to what is being said; as Dawe relies on universally issues to form the backbone of his poetry, especially in ‘Homecoming’ and ‘Life-Cycle’. Lastly, a distinct Australian poem would only be expected to explore issues relating to the countries individual culture or issues, though

As we get older, we are taught information that will prepare us for our future adult life. We go to school to learn about what we want to do career wise later on in life. Then, we use that information and apply it when we are actually working as adults. Many aspects of life can be game-like, depending on which way you look at it. We have to follow the rules, like in a game, to get to the end.

Amy Tan’s Joy Luck Club is an amazing representation of what Chinese immigrants and their families face. The broad spectrum of the mothers’ and daughters’ stories all connect back to a couple of constantly recurring patterns. These patterns are used to show that how the mothers and daughters were so differently raised affected their relationships with each other, for better and for worse. To begin with, the ever-present pattern of disconnect between the two groups of women is used to show how drastically differently they were raised.

Writer Alexandra Robbins writes a non-fiction expose following the lives of various overachievers at Walt Whitman High School. The purpose Robbins conveys in the book is that college admission expectations have made high school a very cut-throat environment, leading students who try to meet these expectations to have deteriorating emotional and mental health. Throughout the book Robbins uses strong forms of imagery to get across the idea that stress is negatively impacting many students health and uses shocking statistics to show that students are turning to self –harm and suicide to deal with stress. Robbins uses imagery in a scene of a Whitman student named AP Frank who acquired seventeen AP credits in the course of his high school career.

The two lovers die in the end because of Romeo's loss of self-control.

As seen by the mothers’ and daughters’ behavior towards each other in The Joy Luck Club, it is difficult to preserve one’s culture when one is exposed to a new environment or country. With a difference of two distinct generations between them, the four main pairs often come across cultural collisions. Other than facing the age gap, these mothers and daughters also have to deal with a language and communication barrier. Already, at the beginning of the story, Jing-Mei Woo is able to understand how the mothers of the “Joy Luck Club” are displeased with their daughter’s rejection of their Chinese culture. She speaks to herself, admitting that “they are frightened.

The characterization of Waverly Jong in Amy Tan’s “Rules of the Game” delineates the importance of foresight and the ability to anticipate the outcome of situations, especially in the case of her mother. In analyzing Waverly’s acknowledgement, “I learned why it is essential in the endgame to have foresight...all weaknesses and advantages become evident to a strong adversary and are obscured to a tiring opponent..for the whole game one must gather invisible strengths and see the endgame before the game begins.” (3), the reader is able to decipher how Waverly’s thoughts work to elicit a greater meaning

I do think we are in control of our own happiness because I think the human controls how we feel on a day to day bases because of the actions we do so really I do think we control our own happiness just how we control our actions. So One example is our decisions that we do during the day make our happiness because if you start thinking about all this negative stuff you won't be happy therefore like say if your in school and all this negative stuff starts to happen you just got to deal with it because if you don't then that shows that your not a strong person inside and that any little thing will bother and will ruin your day and so if you just know how to deal with it and put it aside and not let it break your happiness then that shows that

Introduction Organizational Behavior is the field of study which investigates the impact that individuals, group and structures have on behavior within the organization. We are born in an organization, we live, we work and most probably we will die in an organization. Yet most of us do not understand how people function, behave and interact between each other within these organizations. We also do not understand if people shape an organization or an organization shapes people. Different people work differently in different situations.

In the movie titled “The Pursuit of Happyness”, there was a problematic family living in San Francisco in 1981. The main character, Chris Gardner worked as a salesman invested his entire life savings in portable bone density scanner to support his family including his wife Linda and a five years old son Christopher. However, Chris’ business is not doing well and his wife was forced to work. Day after day, Linda was suffering and she always quarrelled with Chris and blamed him didn’t play the role as a responsible father and a good husband. Luckily, this was not the end for Chris.
