Scout Coming Of Age

Kyla Beil Mrs. Musgrove English Period 4 Jean Lousie, Scout, Finch Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, was told from the first person perspective of ScoutJean Louise, better known as Scout Finch and was a unique blend of Scout’s younger and older self. The setting of the story is a small town Maycomb, Alabama, in 1935. This was during the Great Depression, which adds further depth to the novel. Many are too poor to pay for things with money and resort to the product of their labors to pay for things such as a bag of hickory nuts to help pay for legal fees. The air was hot and wet in the first chunk of the book during the end of summer.

To kill a Mockingbird- Scout To Kill A Mockingbird is a movie about The Finches, a family that is very different in a time where discrimination was a main part of their world. In Maycomb, Alabama in the early 1930s it was very rare for a southern family to not be racist, or discriminate towards anyone. The main character Scout, shows many important character traits including courage, adventurousness, and respectfulness.

In this essay i will be going over the concept of maturing and how the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” dives into the concept. Throughout the story there are many pieces of evidence that supports how characters in the story have matured. A piece of evidence that backs this up is “When we were small, Jem and I confined our activities to the southern neighborhood, but when I was well into the second grade at school and tormenting Boo Radley became passé, the business section of Maycomb drew us frequently up the street past the real property of Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose.” (Lee 114) This quote shows that once upon a time “tormenting” Boo Radley was something fun to do and fill Scout and Jem’s time.

Maturation, is a process which displays how a person has evolved in to something more as they grow up in life. To kill a Mocking bird, written by Harper Lee, is a novel about two siblings that live in a cynical town that have an unforgettable childhood full of adventure and life lessons set in the late 1930s. Precocious at the beginning of the novel, but by the end of the book scout has matured and has gained a more clear understanding of thing that occur around her, even though she may still be a young girl she has the mature understanding of a young adult. Her interaction with neighbors and friends and family, her experience with the Tom Robinson trial and her unforeseen meeting with Boo Radley all abetted her maturation.

Some people isn’t as bad as they seem “You shouldn't judge people by what chapter you walk in on.” In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee shows or tells the story of scout and Jem Finch growing up in a small southern town called Maycomb. In this book the protagonist Scout goes through many of coming of ages experiences. Some of the important scenes where Scout matures up is on her first day of school, walking from a fight, and encountering Boo Radley or Aurther Radley.

In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem and Scouts changing perspective of Arthur ‘Boo’ Radley represents a coming of age moment because it demonstrates a breaking away from the childlike imagination that had previously explained all of their questions and superstitions about the Radley’s. A coming-of-age moment is the transition of thinking that occurs when someone learns empathy. At the start of the novel, in many situations, Scout and Jem demonstrate childish behavior and thinking when Jem is taunted into touching the side of the Radley home by Scout and Dill. The book reads, “Jem threw open the gate and sped to the side of the house, slapped it with his palm and ran back past us” (18). From this portion of the novel we can tell that Jem and Scout clearly regarded the Radley home and its occupants with novelty and even fear.

Coming of age signifies a change from childhood to adulthood. Two stories that are centered around “coming of age” are A&P and Araby. A&P is about a boy named Sammy who stands up for three girls who were being affronted about what they were wearing inside the grocery store. The conflict of the story and the coming of age moment revolves around what Sammy focused on when he saw them; until, he resolves to stand up for them. Araby on the other hand focuses on an unnamed narrator who is enamored with Magellan's sister and decides to go to Araby, a Dublin Bazaar, in order to get something for her.

Children are very impressionable people. Almost everything around them changes them in some way. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the main characters, Scout and Jem, start out as little kids who spend their days making up stories and playing sill games. Then their dad, who is a lawyer, takes on a case defending a black man who has been charged with rape. Since they live in Alabama, The whole family has to absorb some pretty ugly things, which forces Scout and Jem to grow up quickly, and it gives them a different and more mature view of the world.

(Need a hook). The author uses of view of a child, Scout Finch, along with two other children, Jem Finch and Dill, to show the innocence of children is taken away from the coming of age. She uses a trial against a black man raping a white girl to show how children are innocent. Harper Lee uses life lessons to show that Scouts coming of age. Scout says, “Atticus had said it was the polite thing to talk to people about what they were interested in, not about what you were interested in” (Lee 129).

Scout changed a lot over the course of this story. She was exposed to many events that led to her gradually changing her way of life. She doesn’t change as much as Jem does or as fast as him, but she still changes. She learns to mature, understand things better, and treat people with respect.

However, we don’t always only the just induce the positive values, but also adapt to the disadvantageous values, as well. To Kill a Mockingbird is a unique novel written by Harper Lee, which tells about a sophisticated family living in a small town. The focus of the book is Scout, the main character and an innocent child, and the story is presented from her perspective.

The name of the novel being explored is 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee. To Kill a Mockingbird is set in the 1950's in Alabama Maycomb during the racist times towards the blacks. Throughout this topic the focus is on the main character/narrator Scout (Jan Louise Finch). This essay will explore Scout's character and the negative and or positive influence she has on other characters at the start, throughout and at the end of the text. At the beginning of the novel 'To kill a Mockingbird' Scout is a naïve, has a very tomboy like personality, is a judgmental five year-old girl who was oblivious to the cruelty's of the outside world.

Jean Louise Finch ‘Scout’ is a headstrong young girl who narrates the novel ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’, set in the fictitious County Maycomb over the span of three years. She is often found sporting dirty overalls or breeches and possesses a rather tomboyish personality, much to her aunt’s dismay. It says, “Aunt Alexandra was fanatical on the subject of my attire... When I said I could do nothing in a dress, she said I wasn’t supposed to be doing things that required pants. ”(Page 90)

“The hardest part of growing up is letting go of what we are used to and moving on to something you are not”-Paul Walker Growing up is one of the hardest, as well as one of the most important parts in life. Growing up should be fun, but in Scouts case learning about the cruelty and the reality she is living in is no fun. As the novel advances Scout experiences various emotional changes because of different events that take place. She starts to realize the unfairness that exists between different races and the discrimination that is rounding at the time.

Scout’s relationship with Jem is comparable to the relationship with Atticus. First, Scout’s relationship with Jem is comparable to the relationship with Atticus because scout looks up to them. Scout looks up to Atticus when she needs help with questions she doesn’t know. An example of Scout looking up to Atticus is when she asked Atticus about what was happening in Germany with Adolf Hitler and the Jews. This is comparable with Scouts relationship with Jem because Scout also looks to Jem for guidance like Atticus.
