Saint Basil Cathedral

Upon beginning this assignment, my main issue was finding a historical site worth writing about. I did not want to be stuck with something typical or predictable. I wanted to try and find a site that was of significance to American Politics and to the community that it resided in. I have always held a strong interest in civil rights and the difficulties of the minorities to gain equality in America. I also knew from previous studies that the churches often held a great amount of influence in the progress of the African American people when fighting for that equality.

St. Patrick 's Cathedral in New York, built between 1853 and 1878 and is located in Midtown skyscraper district of New York, in the heart of the borough of Manhattan. It is located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 50th Street , just steps from the Rockefeller Center and nine blocks away from Central Park. It is the main church of the Archdiocese of New York and was built in the nineteenth century in Gothic style on the plans of the architect James Renwick Jr. The height under the arch is 110 feet. The altars Saint Michel and Saint Patrick was made by Tiffany & Co; that of St. Elizabeth was designed by Paolo Medici of Rome.

Ivan the great bell tower was also located in the Kremlin. Napoleon heard that the top of the cathedral of annunciation was covered in gold but he mistaken the cathedral with the Ivan the great bell tower but it was only made out of iron. Due to the significance of Saint Peter, the Necropolis found underneath Vatican City becomes critical to the Christian faith. Saint Peter was crucified in Nero’s Circus (“Circuses of Rome”). On this location, Constantine built the original Saint Peter’s Basilica with the purpose of providing both an extravagant monument to the first of Christ’s disciples and protection of the location of Saint Peter’s supposed burial (“History”). During construction, massive quantities of earth had to be moved to level the side of the hill upon which the Basilica would be erected; the Necropolis was actually filled in entirely with earth.

The first side includes the California Building and Tower , and on the other side, The Museum of Man, and the Sr. Francis Chapel. The building has a richly ornamented front piece, and a big dome fully decorated in yellow, blue, green and white handmade tiles, the domes had geometric shapes such as squares and diamonds shapes, including an octagram (eight sided star) . The dome was divided equally by six stone arches, and on top of it there is a small mini tower with pointed finials and six vertical arched windows, and a cross on the very top. next to it the California Tower and the Museum of Man which is the main building in Balboa Park. During the exposition the Museum of Man, was recognized and noted by most architects as the finest example of Spanish Colonial Revival throughout the United States.

The abundance of works of art that depict the labors of Herakles certainly makes it a difficult task to select which work of art to study. Not only is the range of labors vast but also the depictions are numerous. Thus, it is quite daunting to have to pick one work of art out of the seemingly infinite collection on the Classical Art Research Centre.
