All people inherently have impulses. Learning to control them however, is something not everyone is born with, but is something that we all need. This can be seen in both The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, and A Delicate Balance: Risks, Rewards, and the Adolescent Brain, by Carl Sherman. In A Delicate Balance, information is revealed about the adolescent brain, and how inadequate parenting can lead to a variety of ‘misadventures’, many of which can be dangerous. The protagonists in the play, Romeo and Juliet, made many rash decisions which led to setbacks and deaths throughout the course of their journey. Both of these works show consequences in not controlling human behaviors, supporting a theme of learning to control impulses, a skill …show more content…
Romeo and Juliet recently met each other, declaring eternal love. However miscommunication and Romeo’s impatience led him to follow through with a rash decision, eventually leading to them never seeing each other again. Romeo learned that Juliet was ‘dead’, and upon hearing this, decided to commit suicide. “Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die” (227 ll. 120). In fact, Juliet was not dead, and Romeo had actually noticed this “Is crimson in thy lips and in thy cheeks,” (227 ll. 95). Had he taken more time to think out his actions, piecing together his observations, he perhaps would have been able to spend more time with Juliet. Romeo clearly loved Juliet a lot, which goes to show that impulsive actions can overpower the strongest of dreams or peoples’ wills. Before this happened, Romeo had made similar decisions resulting in loss of life. In the heat of the moment, after witnessing the death of his best
In the Ted Talk, “The Mysterious Workings of the Adolescent Brain” Sarah-Jayne Blakemore even said, “The limbic system, have been found to be hypersensitive to the feeling of risk taking in adolescents compared with adults,” (Doc A). This quote really explained how Romeo and Juliet's adolescent brains are the ones to blame. Their brains caused them to do all the unsafe things due to their hypersensitivity to risk. Another example of how their brains caused their deaths was when Helen Fisher stated that, “The brain system-the reward system for wanting, for motivation, for craving for focus-becomes more active when you can’t get what you want,” (Doc C). This quote does a good job explaining how Romeo and Juliet not being able to be together prompted their brains to crave it even more.
In Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare suggests that the Prince is responsible for the lovers’ death because of his lack of control over his people, but young lovers are not responsible because love is uncontrollable. Losing family in war because of an unintelligent mistake, leaves a very big mark in life that is hard to forget. When the Prince is talking about the families’ feud and their disagreements, he said, “And I, for winking at your discords too, Have lost a brace of kinsmen” (5.3.304,305). This quote demonstrates that the Prince admits that he is causing this feud between the families. He says that he lost two family members during this feud.
(HOOK) Novelist Sean Covey once wrote, “We are free to choose our paths, but we can't choose the consequences that come with them.” His statement compels the reader to realize the effect that results from their actions. (CI) In the same way, William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is an exceptional example of how misguided decisions lead to dire consequences. (GS1)
She swears she 's over him, but there will always be a part of her that trusts you will come back. Maybe in five months, a decade later, or in another universe from now; when the both of you are wiser, suffered different heartbreaks, and dream different dreams. We will come together again. We 'll end up meeting at a local downtown coffee shop; maybe you 'll notice that my hair is shorter, my laugh is a bit lower pitched, and my clothes have lost colour. Your eyes may be dimmer, your face may be wrinkled, but your hands, the touch I 've been trying to mask with other people all this time, will feel the same, and it will hit me in the same way my dark black coffee hits me.
I have chosen one of the key people in this book that led to the deaths of Romeo and Juliette is Friar Laurence. I am choosing to punish the Friar because in act 2 Romeo went to his church and told him they would like to get married. Even after the Friar said that this was not true love, the only reason was that she was a pretty girl and that “man's heart lives in man's eye.” He still agreed to marry them. This shows that he didn’t care if they loved each other and was more concerned about the ongoing fight between the families.

“Wisely and slow. They stumble that run fast”(2.3.102). In the drama Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, there are many characters who could be accused of provoking Romeo and Juliet to their suicide. Even though the ultimately took their own lives, Friar has led them to this path by marrying Romeo and Juliet to end their families feud, making a perilous plan for Juliet, and leaving Juliet unassisted in the Capulet tomb. There are those who believe that the Nurse is at fault of their suicide.
“I’ll look to like, if looking liking move” (21). The conversation was about the arranged marriage in which Juliet don’t even know whom she is going to marry. Shakespeare demonstrates Juliet’s innocence through dialogue, metaphor and imagery. Juliet’s innocence is proven through the use of dialogue that showcasing her immaturity and obedience.
This quote by Unknown states “When we make selfish decisions we destroy those left in the wake of our disaster.” In the tragic play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet’s selfish decision leave them and members in the play dead and others devastated. Romeo and Juliet caused their death by selfish decisions, rushing into serious situations, and their immaturity. The way they acted shows how they are most to blame for their own deaths. Romeo and Juliet caused their own death by their selfish decisions.
Parents. Everyone has them, and everyone either loves them or hates them. They give their children a house to live in, provide food and water, raise and teach them valuable lessons. But do they know what's best for them? Parents don't know the answer to everything whether they have been in the situation before or not.
As professor Sarah-Jayne Blakemore states “... brain research has shown that the adolescent brain undergoes really quite profound, developmental, and this has implications for education, for rehabilitation, and intervention” This quote explains that adolescents are easily influenced and that everything that they are exposed to has an impact on their behavior. This is significant in Romeo and Juliet as Juliet’s dad is strict causing Juliet to run after Romeo’s love. Similarly, teenagers tend to take risks due to the development of their brains. “.. the limbic system … involved in things like emotion processing and reward processing. It gives you the rewarding feeling of doing fun things, including taking risks”(Doc A).
Lord Capulet should be punished because his insistence on Juliet's marriage to Paris contributes to her tragic end. When Lord Capulet threatens Juliet, he puts immense pressure on her to take drastic measures. " Thursday is near; lay hand on heart, advise. An you be mine, I'll give you to my friend; An you be not, hang, beg, starve, die in the streets" (III. 5. 191-194).
We are human. Humans have emotions. The matter of fact is that our emotions are one of the few things that control us even without our consent. They can control what we do or say, and sometimes can even make us make impulsive decisions. Emotions have more control over us then we have control over ourselves.
V1: I knew the day we met That we were meant to be I knew that our fate was set That you were the one for me
In the distance, I spot someone with a mask on that looks pretty familiar. I scooted closer and realized who it was. It was Romeo. I thought to myself what is he doing here, I told him lots of times that he can not come to this because he is a Montague and this is a Capulet feast. I decide to not make a big deal out of it and just try to enjoy the night and eat.
