Emily Wellington Chris Sommar ENG2D1-05 Is a story featuring the main character Macbeth hence the title, his story comprises murder and ambition — starting with the murder of Duncan committed by Macbeth with Lady Macbeth's guiding hand, which escalated to the murder of his best friend Banquo and the killings of Macduff's family to keep his declaration to the throne leading to his ultimate demise at the battle of Dunsinane slain by Macduff's and the English militaries, this discussion is on the points where ambition in Macbeth lead to the downfall of Macbeth. The first point that ambition is clear within the story is Macbeth when Macbeth, specifically when Lady Macbeth learns of what the weird sisters had informed Macbeth even accurately foreseeing his new name Thane of Cawdor not meant as a prophecy maybe but more like a hook to snare him, which they prevail, and they declare 'all hail Macbeth, that shalt be king' hearing of this Lady Macbeth provokes Macbeth to kill Duncan (the king within first few acts) to get closer to the throne not knowing that Malcolm and Donalbain (the king's sons) would flee, leaving Macbeth the only one able to fill the role as king. This is the first instance of what ambition does to lead to disaster. The murder of a king was a personal crime against God.
Macbeth had become everything that he had ever wanted to be which was the king of Scotland and when the witches told him that someone else was going to take his crown he went to extremes to try to keep them from doing that which was eventually what lead to him dying. The witches had told Macbeth that the sons of Banquo would take his crown so he decided to have Banquo and his son killed Macbeth said, “Our fears in Banquo stick deep/ And in his royalty of nature reigns that which would be feared”(3.1.49-51). Macbeth did everything he could to protect his crown, but that is eventually what lead to his downfall and his death. He killed his best friend Banquo which was when his ambition had gone to far and was the beginning of his decline.
At the end of the play Macbeth ambition was too big and it made him went to the wrong path which led to his death. First reason, Macbeth was thinking about murdering the king and it’s not a good choice. Then he finally did his unforgivable move which is kill the king when the king was visiting his castle. He couldn’t control himself because his ambition was getting too big and it swallow him. A quote in the play said ”
Lady Macbeth plans to invite king Duncan over for dinner, but really she is convincing Macbeth to murder him. She influences him to kill Duncan because he is the only one standing in the way of Macbeth becoming king. Lady Macbeth plans the killing but convinces Macbeth to do the dirty deed. Lastly, Lady Macbeth is one of the causes of Macbeth’s failure because she repeatedly questions Macbeth’s manhood until she persuades him to make a bad choice. “When you durst do it then you were a man” (1.7.53-58).
However, Macbeth was affected by the mysterious force, which reached his deepest mind and manipulated him to commit crimes. In the end, the darkness took over him by manipulating him to become an ambitious, fearless, and inhumane person to commit crimes. Therefore, due to the prophecy of mysterious force caused Macbeth to change by losing his humanity throughout each successive murder he committed. In the beginning of the story, Macbeth
This led to him going insane. Macbeth didn 't have to do this, he had already been promoted and had a better job than he had had beforehand. he was very well off and did not need the responsibilities of a king. he could have moved on and lived his life but, he killed the king. This event in the movie was portrayed with much more emotion than expected.

Throughout the tragedy, Macbeth 's character takes a big, yet gradual change for the worst as ambition starts to completely take over him. Once the three witches give Macbeth his prophecies he transitions from a brave, loyal man to a cold blooded murderer. His power hungry personality leads to a character change from who he was before he knew about the witches prophecies, after he learned of them, and right before he was murdered. In Macbeth, Shakespeare dramatises the damaging physical and mental effects of ambition on those who seek power for their own sake.
Macbeth started off as a valiant and courageous soldier, who would do anything for the king. By the end of the play, Macbeth was a tyrant and a horrible leader who killed those who trusted him to maintain the throne. It takes many factors to take a strong man and transform him into an evil monster. Macbeth’s downfall was caused by the deception and temptation of the witches and their prophecies, Lady Macbeth’s greed and aspirations for her husband to be king, and Macbeth’s own greed, jealousy and ambition.
She insults him and calls him a coward while also questioning his manhood which makes Macbeth come to a realization that not killing the king is the way of a coward and he is motivated to carry out the plan and murder the king because of Lady Macbeth’s insults and speech that she gives him. By successfully persuading Macbeth into murdering the king this shows that Lady Macbeth is controlling towards people and she can be a very manipulative person. It shows that she is the type of person that gets things done by manipulating other people to do her dirty work for her. Lady Macbeth can simply achieve her own goals by getting into anyone’s head and turning their own conscience against them in, which is essentially what she did to her husband. Macbeth would have never went through with killing King Duncan if Lady Macbeth had never persuaded him because he really does have a soft heart and is good and honorable.
He did not hesitate to do whatever it takes to get what he wanted. This was the downfall in his life. Macbeth’s status went from a respected man to be known as a dead butcher. People may argue that his downfall was because of the three witches and Lady Macbeth.
