The Odyssey “Pay no attention to appearing.” -André Gide The magical Disney classic Beauty and the Beast begins with an old woman pleading with a cold-hearted prince for shelter one frigid night. The prince is repulsed by her ragged appearance and turns her away. The woman warns him, “Do not be deceived by appearances, for beauty is found within.” The prince, however, remains unconvinced and orders her away a second time. It is then that the woman transforms herself into a lovely enchantress and as punishment turns the prince into a monstrous beast. Beauty and the Beast is a story in which the central theme is appearance: it opens with the prince’s failure to look past an exterior and ends with Belle’s success at looking through the exterior. Similarly, in The Odyssey, appearance plays a large role. Athena alters Odysseus and Telemachus’ physical appearances several times. For example, in the beginning of the book, Athena “lavished a marvelous splendor on [Telemachus].” Presumably, this change is so that he might gain respect from the elders in the council. Athena’s altering of appearances often fools the vast crowd. However, there are a few situations where characters resist making a judgment based on appearances. Odysseus’s nurse, Eurycleia, …show more content…
As people going out into a world obsessed with appearance, we need to remember to look beyond the exterior. The lessons of Eurycleia and Penelope are lessons that are sorely needed in our culture. We must immerse ourselves in the truth, so that we can recognize it anywhere. We also need to be critical of our eyes. In the words of Paul, we must learn to “test all things, hold fast what is good,” and let the rest fade away. If we can learn to look deeper–to see past appearances, to surround ourselves with truth, then perhaps we can begin to see people for what they truly
Never judge a person by how they look, but by their personality. To begin, in the realistic fiction novel, Freak the Mighty, by Rodman Philbrick, they are two friends, Max and Freak, with disabilities. Max is a very tall person who has a learning disability and Freak is not that tall and has morquio syndrome. They end up going on adventures and facing trouble. There are two themes that could be found throughout the book.
In the epic poem, The Odyssey, the hero Odysseus shows many heroic traits, but the most important trait is restraint. The first episode when Odysseus shows restraint is when they land of the land of the lotus eaters. Odysseus could have stayed there and got super high and addicted and been happy on lotus for the rest of forever, but instead he got his men and he went back to his ship because he knew that he had a job to do. He had to have a lot of restraint to stop from trying out the lotus.

The Odyssey, one of the world’s most famous stories, has been under debate on whether on whether or not it conforms to be a hero’s journey, a type of pattern theorized to be at the core of many myths. To understand its potential monomyth-hood, the story has be understood, as well as the different phases of a hero’s journey. A hero’s journey, by definition, must include a few characteristics: a phase where the hero leaves their home and decides on a quest, a period marked by a discovered conflict, an all-out struggle, the development of the hero, and the hero bettering the lives of those back at home. In The Odyssey, Odysseus, the protagonist, journeys to his home, in Ithaca, from Troy, where he waged and won a war. Along the way, Odysseus
Odysseus, in The Odyssey by Homer, and I both demonstrate self-restraint. One time Odysseus shows self-discipline is when he’s in the cyclops’ cave and stabbed his eye. The cyclops “squatted in the breach with arms thrown wide for any silly man or beast that bolted” (907). Odysseus restrains himself from running the first time he sees a way out. Instead he stays back and plans for a better way out.
Natural phenomenons is a science, but centuries ago the Greeks believed a deity was responsible for the natural causes that were created. In Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, Odysseus was separated from his wife and son to fight in the Trojan war for 10 years. In addition, spends 11 more years struggling to get back to his family due to these supernaturals caused by the gods. The Greeks portray the gods to be powerful and merciful. They played a huge role in Odysseus’s heroic journey as a savior and tormentor.
However, there are some characteristics that do not seem to match up. Odysseus is shown to be loyal, generous, and trustworthy but we cannot see much of these personalities on
To manipulate is to control or influence a person or situation cleverly or unfairly. Greek literature demonstrates the captivating theme of manipulation at best through the manipulation of mortals by gods and goddesses. Specifically, The Odyssey by Homer illustrates the various ways this theme is portrayed through the main character Odysseus by gods and goddesses who detest him on his journey home to his home, Ithaca. Further, these influences in his life change his fate, mainly as determinants. Evidently, one can see an instance where Odysseus’s fate is influenced for the worse where Poseidon, god of the sea, swears to make Odysseus’s trip home a living nightmare.
This simile increases the way the Cyclops is seen as powerful figure. The example of figurative language here makes the audience imagine the scene in their minds therefore enriching the description of the scene. These descriptions help the text as a whole feel more immediate to the reader. This has enabled The Odyssey to transcend the test of
In the essay What Meets the Eye, Daniel Akst argues that look or beauty does matter in the daily life, that is, people’s life can be largely influenced or even controlled by look. Through reading Akst’s essay, I completely understand how people have different perspectives of others, as many people pay attention to and worry about how they look in the daily life. And people tend to judge others by their beauty or looks to a large extent. Akst’s ideas quite conform to and reinforce Paglia’s points that pursuing and maximizing one’s attractiveness and beauty is a justifiable aim in any society, and that good surgery discovers reveals personality. Both of them hold the idea that beauty plays an important role in people’s life and it is significant to enhance one’s beauty and attractiveness.
Women are weak, helpless, and have no real purpose other than to serve men and take care of children. . . or so they were perceived in history. In the Odyssey, one can see that Homer’s portrayal of women challenges the depiction of women during that time period. Throughout the book, many women intervened in Odysseus’ journey home to Ithaca, for better or for worse. One will see Penelope, Athena, Circe, and other women impact Odysseus’ expedition home.
In Homer's epic poem,The Odyssey, women are a major part of the story. In ancient times, women were very limited to their rights. They were expected to stay at home all day every day. When men would cheat on their wives it was fine, but when woman cheated they were shamed. When their husbands would leave, they would have to feel lonely while the Husband could go off and cheat.
Odysseus should be considered unheroic because he refused to listen to anyone's suggestions and kept putting his men in dangerous situations. For example, Odysseus’ men told him to take the cheese and lambs and leave but Odysseus told them,”Ah, how sound was that! Yet I refuse, I wished to see the caveman, what he had offer- no pretty sight, it turned out, for my friends” (Homer 5). This demonstrates unheroic behavior because they didn't know whether or not the cyclops would be nice but instead of putting safety first, Odysseus insisted on meeting the cyclops. He let his curiosity take over and stopped caring about what would happen to them.
The series of short stories that compile as “The Odyssey”, tells a tale of the journey Odysseus takes. Throughout his journey, many characters play some form of influential roles. One important character is Polyphemus. Better known as the Cyclopes. This is the POV of the Cyclopes from book nine of The Odyssey.
“Foundation of Family” Family is the fundamental building block of all societies. It is all inclusive across generations and cultures. Based on the epic poem The Odyssey and current families today, we see that family is where we learn to love ourselves and each other, to bear one another’s burdens, to find meaning in our life and to give purpose to other’s lives, and to feel the value of being part of something greater than ourselves. Family is where we experience our biggest triumphs, deepest vulnerabilities, and where we have the greatest potential to do good.
