“Foundation of Family” Family is the fundamental building block of all societies. It is all inclusive across generations and cultures. Based on the epic poem The Odyssey and current families today, we see that family is where we learn to love ourselves and each other, to bear one another’s burdens, to find meaning in our life and to give purpose to other’s lives, and to feel the value of being part of something greater than ourselves. Family is where we experience our biggest triumphs, deepest vulnerabilities, and where we have the greatest potential to do good. The love of a family is life’s greatest blessing. In life, there is a universal desire for oneness among people—we want to belong. It is why we collaborate, support common causes, cheer for sports teams, feel nationalism; it’s why we build villages, towns, and cities. Families are where we connect ourselves in relationships to past, current, and future generations. For many, family is not only a blessing, but our greatest accomplishment. We are proud of the love we give and receive, for our children and the habits, emotional responses, obligations and values that we teach them. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is no different and the importance of his family is demonstrated as he weeps tears of sadness in their absence and rejects Calypso’s offer of immortality in exchange for his companionship. “‘My lady goddess, here is no cause for anger. My quiet Penelope—how well I know—would seem a shade before your majesty, death
Notably, the song in the chorus describes how at home his love remains waiting silently for him. Likewise in The Odyssey, Penelope remains loyal to Odysseus through all the pandemonium from the suitors and nearly a 20 year absence from Odysseus. In one such instance with Penelope talking with Eurymachus, she describes the pride she has for herself and her marriage with Odysseus by saying ”'Eurymachus, all my excellence, my beauty and figure, were ruined by the immortals at that time when the Argives took ship for Ilion, and with them went my husband, Odysseus. If he were to come back to me and take care of my life, then my reputation would be more great and splendid(18.251-255).” Furthermore, the lyrics of the song constantly deal with the desire to return home; similarly, this is a common story development for Odysseus in The Odyssey.
Importance of Family In Homer’s “The Odyssey,” a valiant soldier-Ulysses-took twenty years to return home from war (Sentence 7a). He had left behind his wife and unborn child. Ulysses overcame a plethora of obstacles throughout his journey.
In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus, a famous Trojan War hero, is lead away from home for twenty years. As such, the only reason he can move forward is the thought of seeing his wife and child. This shows a deeper emotional path for Odysseus. In “The Cruelest Journey- 600 Miles
In Homer’s The Odyssey, the bond between father and son is strongly emphasized throughout the novel. For example, Poseidon defends his son, Polyphemus the cyclops, by punishing Odysseus for blinding him. Odysseus and his crew are put in life threatening situations, such as deadly storms and monsters, because they harmed a god’s son. Poseidon seems very protective of his son, like any father would be, so the punishment he sends upon Odysseus is done out of respect and value for his family.
Introduction Imagine you are living in the world where everyone had a father except you, that you don't have a father and you don't even know who is your father's or where is he, What would you do or how would you feel? For many of us that doesn’t have a father are really affected in lives because some people can’t just live without a father because the father is the king of the house. The father is also the person who leads or rule the house. Whether you have a father or not, just imagine living in a world without your father how would your life be affected.
From Odysseus’ time with Calypso in Ogygia up until the moment he takes back his home and wife from the suitors in Ithaca, the struggles he faces help answer what makes for a good life. Homer uses Odysseus’ journey throughout “The Odyssey” to identify four aspects of a good life: mortality, honor, hospitality, and experiences. Homer reveals that mortality is necessary for a good life when Odysseus denies the opportunity for immortality that Calypso offers, he shows the significance of honor in his description of Odysseus’ bravery in the Trojan war and the consequent respect that Odysseus’ crew has for him, Homer reinforces the importance of hospitality in each city Odysseus travels to, and he conveys that experiences, good or bad, define a good life. The Greeks held their gods in high esteem and therefore when Homer or other characters in the epic refer to Odysseus as being “godlike,” this is one of the highest compliments he could receive.
When someone hears the word “family” most reminisce of holidays spent with siblings and parents, of opening presents and delicious meals, of blue-haired, cheek squeezing grandparents, and celebrations of life’s monuments. In Brenda Almond’s book The Fragmenting Family, “For many people, the most plausible starting point for any [family] analysis is biological…Biology makes a reasonable starting point for understanding the concept of a family simply because the family is a ubiquitous social institution” (9). In the traditional sense, “family” has meant a blood-related relative or a group of individuals brought together through marriage. Today this word carries several different meanings and carries various sociolinguistic insinuations. I consider
Desire for fame is another reason for Odysseus to return his homeland. If he had married with Calypso, he could be immortal at once and he would not die, but in that island he had no fame for his personality. Odyssey’s journey after he left his home to troy, and from troy to Calypso’s island means much more for him; though the situation in his home and the journey was unpleasant, he will get the fame for his deeds once he will reach Ithaca. Even the journey was incredibly painful, Odysseus shared every things to people on the way because his journey was meaningful for him as he went to Trojan’s war, killed Troy’s companion, blinded Cyclops, cursed by Poseidon, reached the kingdom of the Dead, save his troops from Circe, all his commanders died
Parent-child relationships are very prevalent in works of literature especially in the pieces written in Ancient Greece and Rome. Some examples of these are the works we have read in class such as the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Electra plays, and Aristophanes’ the Clouds. Although mother-daughter relationships are important throughout each of these works; father-son relationships are even more so. The father-son relationship is one of the most important aspects of these societies especially in the Odyssey written by Homer. The significance of all of the father-son relationships depicted in the Odyssey itself is for the purpose of exploiting its themes of family, xenia and tradition.
Family is the cornerstone of our lives and our society, so most of us consider family is the most important in our lives. Each family has different beliefs, moral standards, and values. The traditional American family, which comprises of a breadwinner father, a homemaker mother, and their biological children, reinforces the belief in the father as the head of the household and the mother as the home-based role. However, the family values in America today consist mainly of acceptance of non-traditional families, such as same-sex marriage, single-parent families, and blended families.
