Creating a deeper understanding of history is like having a compass guiding us through uncharted waters of the present into the future. Just as a compass helps us navigate unknown terrain, knowledge of history can enable us to travel in the right direction and make adequate choices. The forces that have shaped our world and the decisions that have led us to the present are essential to understand. Researching the past and the different societies that constructed it is a vital tool that helps us make sense of the world. Archaeologists and historians are able to discover more about the Ancient African people by finding artifacts, ancient treasures, and even the ruins of the cities. A large portion of African history was remembered through the practice of oral tradition which is a form of communication where knowledge, stories, and ideas are shared and received orally between people. Before history was written down, “oral history was remembered and passed along” throughout different generations (Quigley 9). This could have taken place at various gathering events for gaining wisdom while also being entertained. The ancient people would gather and listen to storytellers called griots who “knew and retold the important stories of the West African people” (Quigley 9). They forged advanced technology and ideas. The different empires in Ancient West Africa shared a common area and trade route but all had their own customs, traditions, and way of life. These different groups of people should be studied in order to understand the bigger picture of Africa’s history. After the muslims conquered West Africa is when we first heard about the empires from the Arabic language sourcers (Doc F). This is important to the prosperity in kingdoms of West Africa because the spread of the West African culture created an increase in their status leading to a beneficial expansion in their culture. This, thanks to the help of the West African kingdom spread from the muslims and arabic language sources. Also, The continents of Africa, Asia, India, and the Mediterranean brought in more of an exchange interest, which helped expand the geography in West African kingdoms (Doc D). This supports the geographical aspects of the prosperity increase because with the help of other resources around the world, the kingdoms of West Africa became more known for their goods which affected their surroundings leading to geographical enhancements.
Many of those who were ripped from their homelands, dreamt of returning home to their families. After emancipation, the young Africans regrouped and found their own settlement once their dreams of returning home could not become a reality. In “Africa Town” the Clotilda Africans made a living through agriculture and trade techniques that they brought from Africa. This clearly shows, that Africans held on to their traditions unfailingly. “Africa Town,” was founded upon indigenous African cultures and a form centralized state systems.
It was a comprehensive and original survey of the history and culture of Africa from ancient times to modern times. It covered various aspects of African civilization, such as geography, politics, economics, religion, art, literature, science, etc. It also highlighted the diversity and complexity of African societies and peoples, as well as their interactions and influences with other regions and cultures. Woodson said, "The African Background Outlined is to be a guide to African history." Woodson wrote The African Background Outlined with two main purposes in mind.
In History of Africa, Shillington focuses on many aspects of African culture and factors that made Africa to be the continent that it is today. Chapter 5 primarily focuses on the Northern region of Africa and how empires took over and spread their ideology technology, and culture all through out the region. Even today some remnants of the Roman and Greek empire live on to this day (Shillington, 69.) Despite many people getting the impression that Northern Africa is only influenced by Arabic and Islam, these empires and their conquests are best understood through topics like intricate trading routes, farming, and the spread of religion. Shillington provides an in depth analysis of how many of these conquests affected Northern Africa centuries ago and today.
In Africa during the Post-Classical era, 600-1450 CE, the Saharan was no longer a barren wasteland hardly suitable for travel, but, an essential part of both North African and Sub-Saharan West African societies. Camels and caravans allowed for quicker and more effective traveling. With trading becoming increasingly popular in this area, it provided the resources to build new and larger political structures. Africa before 1500 ce was a time where many events happened that changed the civilization of Africa forever. Africa invented trades, cultures, traditions, and so many other things that affected Africa in many ways. There is a huge timeline that explains all the events that happen in Africa, what year they happen, and why they happen in the first place. Many stereotypes of African culture have emerged due to western literature and media and first hand accounts of explorers. Things Fall Apart offers a view into the truth and reality of African cultures, which are often misconceptualized by these stereotypes. Acebe shows how African society functions well without assistance from foreign travelers. In Things Fall Apart, Achebe counters the imperialist stereotypes of Africa by keeping certain words in the Igbo language, as opposed to translating them into English, to fight back against the spreading western culture and to embrace their own way of life. The oral tradition refers to stories, old sayings, songs, proverbs, and other cultural products that have not been written down or recorded. The forms of oral tradition cultures are kept alive by being passed on by word of mouth from one generation to the next. These diverse forms reveal the values and beliefs of African Americans, the things they hold to be true, and lessons about life and how to live it. In African American culture, the oral tradition has served as a fundamental vehicle for cultural expression and survival. This oral tradition also preserved the cultural heritage and reflected the collective spirit of the race.
