Joseph Newell Essay 1-31-23 Mrs. Gray Keep Memory Alive and The American Idea In order to persuade a reader, many authors write essays in a particular way that appeal to the reader’s emotions or to create emphasis on a certain topic. They may use different rhetorical strategies such as parallelism, repetition, slogans, and/or rhetorical questions to make their point. In order to explain this further, Elie Wiesel and Theodore H. White’s stories will be compared and contrasted based on their use of rhetorical devices. The speech “Keep Memory Alive” was delivered by Elie Wiesel to a group of people whom he wanted not to remain silent in the face of injustice. First of all, Wiesel used repetition to get a very important point across to the audience. For example, he repeated the words “I remember”. He wanted people as well as himself to remember the victims of the holocaust. Another rhetorical strategy used by Wiesel was parallelism. One example in his speech of parallelism is “And I tell him that I have tried. That I have tried to keep memory alive, that I have tried to fight those who would forget.”. “The American Idea” which was written by Theodore H. White is a story that emphasizes freedom. In the same way as Wiesel, this author used repetition as a rhetorical strategy. For instance, White used repetition in which certain words were repeated. The phrase “the call” was used multiple times throughout “The American Idea.” The call represents freedom. However, one rhetorical technique that is different from Wiesel is the use of a slogan. White used “that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. In the “Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech,” Elie implied that his memory and many other victims’ memories of the Holocaust should never be forgotten because he believes the victims should be remembered and honored. He believes that others should continue to stand up against antisemitism and keep these memories forever, that way, nothing like the Holocaust ever occurs again. The literature of Language arts we can remember all of the people that their lives were taken in the Holocaust. Because it was one of the worst things that has happened to world history. Elie Wiesel was a survivor and later talked about his struggles in the camps in his memoir Night and his two speeches accepting his Nobel peace prize. The book Night helps us remember that the lifes were taking in the Holocaust.
During Elie Wiesel’s time in the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps, he was met with the sentiment, “Forget where you came from; forget who you were. Only the present matters.” German forces at concentration camps echoed this sentiment to many persecuted ethnic Jews, attempting to shed their last shred of individuality. Elie Wiesel did not follow the words of his oppressors. Instead, Elie learned the importance of memory, despite the repeated attempts at stripping away his identity.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Hhave a Ddream” speech and Elie Wiesel’s acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize both use imagery and repetition in various ways to get their message of freedom and equality to their audience. In both speeches, they use these literary elements to help create a point of what they want the world to know to make it a better place for everyone. In Elie Wiesel’s speech, he uses imagery to better describe “the ghetto” and “the deportation” of the holocaust that he saw and experienced. Wiesel uses his own history of “a young Jewish boy” who “discovered the kingdom of night” to create imagery to make the audience imagine a child during the holocaust, creating a sorrowful and hopeless tone.

Elie Wiesel is a Holocaust survivor who strongly believes that people need to share their stories about the Holocaust with others. Elie Wiesel was in concentration camps for about half of his teen years along with his father. After being the only member of his family to survive the Holocaust he resolved to make what really happened more well-known. Elie Wiesel wrote dozens of books and submitted an essay titled “A God Who Remembers” to the book This I Believe. The essay focused on Elie Wiesel’s belief that those who have survived the Holocaust should not suppress their experiences but must share them so history will not repeat itself.

The speech he gave was an eye-opener to the world in his perspective. Elie Wiesel voiced his emotions and thoughts of the horrors done to Jewish people during World War II whilst developing his claim. Wiesel “remember[s] his bewilderment,” “his astonishment,” and “his anguish” when he saw they were dropped into the ghetto to become slaves and to be slaughtered. He repeats the words “I remember” because he and the world, especially those who suffered in the ghettos and camps, would never be able to forget how innocent suffered. Consequently, he emphasized that “no one” has the right to advocate for the dead. Like many other people in the world, he lost his family during the war.
In his 1986 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, Elie Wiesel strives to inform his audience of the unbelievable atrocities of the Holocaust in order to prevent them from ever again responding to inhumanity and injustice with silence and neutrality. The structure or organization of Wiesel’s speech, his skillful use of the rhetorical appeals of pathos and ethos, combined with powerful rhetorical devices leads his audience to understand that they must never choose silence when they witness injustice. To do so supports the oppressors. Wiesel’s speech is tightly organized and moves the ideas forward effectively. Wiesel begins with humility, stating that he does not have the right to speak for the dead, introducing the framework of his words.
Elie Wiesel, an American Jewish holocaust survivor, that was also a political activist, writer, and professional speaks a heartfelt speech to get across his message about the people who died in the Holocaust by using rhetorical techniques By using logos, Wiesel reiterates what it looked like to be a child and live through the holocaust that affected everyone around him. As a child, he was not able to thoroughly understand what it was like being a child when the Nazis made all Jewish citizens go to ghettos, using sealed cattle cars, which paints a logical picture. “A young Jewish boy discovers the kingdom of night. I remember his bewilderment, I remember his anguish.”
This excerpt is relevant to Wiesel’s biggest fear which is that the world has not learned or has simply forgotten about the Holocaust. The line “Never shall I forget…” (Wiesel, 34) is reiterated to show how important remembering is to Wiesel. This also pertains to Wiesel 's “big idea” which is that his purpose for writing Night was to never let anyone forget about the Holocaust. He hopes that this memoir helps prevent another genocide like this, and helps motivate people to stand up to injustices.
He uses memory as a method of protecting the future from the past. Wiesel explains that memory is “mystical” and that memory “will save humanity” (Wiesel 3) because the “memory of evil will serve as a shield against evil” and the “memory of death will serve as a shield against death” He says this because to prevent another event similar to the Holocaust; we must remember the evil to protect us from evil and remember those that died so that way we may protect ourselves from death. The logos he uses by telling us the uses of memory allows the reader to understand how to protect the future and how to prevent another Holocaust by remembering. Logically, there is a connection between memory and protection that was used allowed the reader to understand the importance of
