Rainsford's 'Guilty In The Most Dangerous Game'

The short story “The Most Dangerous Game’’, Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff . Rainsford is a hunter who fell off a yacht at Ship Trap Island where he meets General Zaroff. General Zaroff is a hunter too. He stays on the island and hunts. Rainsford and General Zaroff are fighting to their death because General Zaroff wants to hunt Rainsford.

On the island, Rainsford is forced to play General Zaroff’s game.

Hunting is a game where you can have fun killing a certain type of animal, but could be very dangerous at the same time. In “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford is a character that is a very good hunter. So one day him and his buddy's went out on a yacht and went out on the sea to go to the caribbean to look for this island to hunt Jaguars. But while on a yacht he feel of the boat and fell into the sea. Moving on he was on this Island and met this General.

Sanger Rainsford was a very smart, successful man. In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Rainsford had outsmarted General Zaroff many times but only three are: making different paths to confuse Zaroff, hiding in the tree from Zaroff when he was hunting him, and hiding in Zaroff’s bedroom curtains to kill him when he came into his room. Rainsford said to himself “I’ll give him a trail to follow” (Richard Connell) page 24, so he made many different loops and paths for him to follow. He made it confusing for Zaroff and he seemed to fall for it.

The main character in the Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford, endured numerous troublesome trials. The last trial he endured, in my opinion, was the hardest; giving him the chance to attack and kill Zaroff right then and there, instead choosing not to take advantage of the situation. Ultimately, he confronted and challenged him to a fair and even sword fight, the winner getting to keep Zaroff 's home while the loser was fed to the dogs. This act shows a great deal of Rainsford 's character and personality, proving to be a man of honor and fairness, with respect in this scenario. Rainsford allowed an even fight to take place, and as a result, for his actions, he won while Zaroff received what he truly deserved.

“I live for danger” General Zaroff says to Rainsford. When Zaroff says this, it sparks the main conflict. Most games are fun, but this game is not like most games. Rainsford is forced to play this game against Zaroff. In the Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, the central man vs. man conflict changes Rainsford from the hunter, to the huntee, and back to the hunter.

In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford fits the category of Zaroff’s ideal animal to hunt, because Rainsford displays the attribute to reason by being able to make many life saving decisions throughout the story. Rainsford has the ability to reason from the very beginning of the story, because he was able to remain calm to make a life saving decision in an unnerving situation, which proves that he fits the quarry for Zaroff to hunt. As he was in the water, he recalls the gunshots he heard while he was still on the yacht, “they had come from the right, and doggedly he swam in that direction, swimming with slow, deliberate strokes, conserving his strength” (Connell 14). Rainsford is a big game hunter who falls off a boat near the island of General Zaroff, a big Cossack general who is looking for an alternative to hunting dangerous animals but with a twist. Throughout “The Dangerous Game” Rainsford and General Zaroff both show examples of IRony and exert arrogance.

In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford was justified for killing General Zaroff. Rainsford was a hunter who had fallen off his boat and found a desserted island. On the island he meets a mad named General Zaroff. General Zaroff knew Rainsford was a hunter and Zaroff asked Rainsford to hunt with him but Rainsford didn’t want to. The reason Rainsford didn’t want to hunt was because General Zaroff hunted humans and Rainsford didn’t believe it was right.

Lastly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because killing Zaroff is going to be the only way Rainsford will escape the island from a psychopath.

There are several conflicts in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell; while person versus person is the most obvious, person versus self and person versus nature are also present. For example, the “jagged crags” upon which Rainsford lands scratch his hands until they are raw, and when Rainsford is trying to survive the hunt, nature once again acts as an obstacle. The muck is like “ a giant leech” and the insects “[bite] him savagely” through the dense vegetation. On the other hand, Rainsford faces an internal dilemma when he is talking to Zaroff about hunting humans for sport: while Rainsford is shocked by the proposition, he feels no revulsion, no disgust. Therefore, because Rainsford does not seem to have an internal aversion to Zaroff’s proposal, that causes a quandary - his lack of moral dilemma in this situation is a dilemma in itself.

What is external conflict? External conflict is a struggle outside of a character. A commonly used example of external conflict is exhibited in the story of Cinderella. She was stuck in the household of her evil stepmother, and was not allowed to leave her home. Cinderella wanted to attend a ball; however, her stepmother would not let her go.

The Most Dangerous Game is about a man named Zaroff who lives on an island by himself. The people that come to the island get trained to get ready for the game. The game involves people going through the jungle, hiding from Zaroff as he hunts them. Both the hunters and the huntees have a different view on the conflict.
