Rainsford In 'The Most Dangerous Game'

Hunting is a game where you can have fun killing a certain type of animal, but could be very dangerous at the same time. In “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford is a character that is a very good hunter. So one day him and his buddy's went out on a yacht and went out on the sea to go to the caribbean to look for this island to hunt Jaguars. But while on a yacht he feel of the boat and fell into the sea. Moving on he was on this Island and met this General.

In “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell. Rainsford was a hunter that fell off a yacht in the Caribbean sea, and swam to an island named Ship-trap, Sanger Rainsford had to figure out how to outsmart Zaroff. The Author states three topics from the hunt starting by climbing up a tree, then seating a trap and hurting Zaroff, Lastly jumping off the cliff and swimming to General Zaroff’s home. Rainsford demonstrated how he is a quick thinker written several times throughout the story.

The main character in the Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford, endured numerous troublesome trials. The last trial he endured, in my opinion, was the hardest; giving him the chance to attack and kill Zaroff right then and there, instead choosing not to take advantage of the situation. Ultimately, he confronted and challenged him to a fair and even sword fight, the winner getting to keep Zaroff 's home while the loser was fed to the dogs. This act shows a great deal of Rainsford 's character and personality, proving to be a man of honor and fairness, with respect in this scenario. Rainsford allowed an even fight to take place, and as a result, for his actions, he won while Zaroff received what he truly deserved.

In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford fits the category of Zaroff’s ideal animal to hunt, because Rainsford displays the attribute to reason by being able to make many life saving decisions throughout the story. Rainsford has the ability to reason from the very beginning of the story, because he was able to remain calm to make a life saving decision in an unnerving situation, which proves that he fits the quarry for Zaroff to hunt. As he was in the water, he recalls the gunshots he heard while he was still on the yacht, “they had come from the right, and doggedly he swam in that direction, swimming with slow, deliberate strokes, conserving his strength” (Connell 14). Rainsford did not like Zaroff, the war general, one bit as a human being.(appositive) Rainsford thought what Zaroff was doing is cold-blooded murder. Rainsford is not wrong the general really is killing humans for the enjoyment. Rainsford explains that he is a hunter and does not use his skills to hunt down people and kill them. Rainsford doesn’t understand why any human would do such a thing. Zaroff finds fun in chasing people in the wild.(gerund).

At first he didn’t want to play the game, “Thank you, i’m a hunter, not a murder”, but in the end he did try. An example was that he tried to set the traps for the general. Rainsford dug a hole with sharpened stakes in the bottom that was intended for the general to fall in, “ He knew his pursuer was coming;.... Then he felt an impulse to cry aloud with joy, for he heard the sharp crackle of the breaking branches as the cover of the pit gave way; he heard the sharp scream of pain as the pointed stakes found their mark.”

Most people when they hear “The Most Dangerous Game” they think of bull riding or other dangerous games that don’t involve death. “The Most Dangerous Game” is a suspenseful cliff hanging story that follows the days of a castaway on the island of a crazed hunter. Rainsford is a big game hunter who falls off a boat near the island of General Zaroff, a big Cossack general who is looking for an alternative to hunting dangerous animals but with a twist. Throughout “The Dangerous Game” Rainsford and General Zaroff both show examples of IRony and exert arrogance.

I picked clever because Katniss is just very clever with things like getting around and hiding in trees. “And just as the knife cuts through, I shove the end of the branch as far away from me as I can. It crashes down through the lower branches, snagging temporarily on a few but then twisting free until it smashes with a thud on the ground. The nest bursts open like an egg, and a furious swarm of tracker jackers takes to the air.” (p. 190)

Katniss is very poor which makes training for the Hunger Games very difficult for her. Unlike her opponents in other districts who train their whole lives for the Games. However, overall she proves to the city and district that she is a tragic hero through her self-sacrifice that led to victory. The Hunger games as you all are in common with was created by a bias capitol.

She has become the victor of the Seventy-fourth Hunger Games. If Katniss would not have persisted throughout the entirety of the Games, then she would have been killed off. This helps support the book's theme of survival because without perseverance, Katniss would not have made it that far in the Games. She would have not at all been able to go home to Prim. One needs perseverance to survive, which is why the character trait conveys the theme of the story.

In the beginning of the movie many of the choices Katniss makes are in order to ensure her families survival. The major decision that Katniss makes for her family is volunteering as a tribute in place of her younger sister, Prim. She made that decision so her younger sister, who was 12 at the time, would not have to fight for her life in the Hunger Games. Characterization is a big part of the overall meaning of the story which is that survival is of those who are smart, cunning, and can adapt to their environment. The protagonist Rainsford is at a constant battle with the antagonist General Zaroff. Throughout the entire short story they both have similar minds sets and then farther along the main character 's mind set develops into something more. The reader can almost sense a self centeredness, and that he believes that there are only two type of people in this world, “the hunters and the huntees”, and he believes that he is the hunter.

An unknown person once said, “When we read books, we don’t fall in love with the character’s appearances. We fall in love with their thoughts, their words, and their actions. We fall in love with their souls.” In the dystopian novel, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, this is exactly what happens, Katniss moves the readers by having such characteristic and skills to be able to survive. Katniss’s characteristics, of being caring, having a determined personality, and her intelligence in survival skills, all help support the theme of Katniss being able to survive.

Katniss learns how to be more selfless and not let coming from district 12 define who she is and what she can do. Katniss is a strong, force,and selfless charter who the readers can see a little bit of themselves in her as she develops through the story. The readers also strive to be a little bit more like Katniss everyday because she has the strength and willpower to complete any task that she puts her mind too.
