The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot DÍaz is about the life Oscar Cabral and his family. The story takes place in the Dominican Republic and in Paterson, New Jersey during the reign of Rafael Trujillo. Trujillo was the Dominican republic's Dictator who was nicknamed El Jefe for good reason. The main story follows Oscar as he grows up but also ventures into the stories of his sister Lola, his mother Beli, his grandfather Abelard, and the narrator, Yunior.

Alvarez unfolds how Trujillo impacted her mother in a chronological order in a revealing way. Alvarez explains at first that her mother adores Trujillo. It was the way of life for the Dominican Republic people. She was raised to be this way in a life of her eyes revolving around this dictator who showed to be really good, but was not good at all. In In The Time of the Butterflies, Julia Alvarez utilizes the power struggle between Trujillo, dictator of the Dominican Republic in 1994 and the Mirabal sisters, who try to overthrow the government, as a means to demonstrate the power struggle the people faced during this time period of Trujillo’s reign. Trujillo is a man who thrives on power and put spies in place to make sure that none of the people were even hinting towards a revolt. When Papa makes a snide comment about Trujillo being a female ruler, in that moment, “the dark fills with spies who are paid to hear things and report them down at Security” (Alvarez 10). This was the beginning of the end of three out of the four Mirabal sisters. Trujillo posts his face on every newspaper, book cover, and anything that people commonly use in order to promote how great he is.

It provides a role in character development shown predominantly in Patrias character. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina, nicknamed El Jefe, ruled the Dominican Republic for 31 years. He organized secret police mento torture, and murder people who stood against him. Trujillo directed all crucial industries, and financial organizations. He murdered roughly 10,000 Haitian people.

Trujillo gets worried when he learns about the 14th of June Movement because he knows that the goal of the movement is to overthrow or kill him. One by one, he starts jailing members of the movement, as well as ransacking or destroying their homes. At Patria’s house, Trujillo has the SIM tear “...the house apart, hauling away the doors, windows, the priceless mahogany beams of Pedrito’s old family rancho” (Alvarez 192). The way that he messes with those involved in the movement is cruel. After having their homes ransacked, Trujillo jails only the Mirabal husbands, which makes the sisters think they are safe.

On its premiere in Madrid in 1967, El tragaluz was very well received, particularly due to its ‘experimental’ structure and subtle criticism of the Franco regime, which were considered avant-garde for the time. The play calls for the audience to be propelled into the distant future and become observers of an experiment that is temporally based in the 1960s. Therefore, the audience members of the time were watching their contemporaries in the form of the main characters. The play is centered around three significant periods including the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939, the mid-1960s, and the twenty-fifth century or thirtieth century. The main story line follows the turbulent relationship between two brothers who lead very different lives as a consequence of the civil war.

In paragraph 27 it states ,”there were still old cronies of the dictator around who would love an excuse to go after my family after my father ,after her ,” the cronies were loyal servants to the dictator even when he was dead so alvarez's mother thought they were still in danger of being captured or killed ,because of the cronies the mother would live in fear unlike alvarez who didn't fully believe they would come after them . Alvarez wrote her novels knowing they may wreak havoc on her family members who were still in the dominican republic and maybe her parents and sisters. In paragraph 29 and 30 it talks about the last novel she wrote about the island and how her mother thought about it ,”I don't care what happens to us i'm so proud of you ,” her mother says ,alvarez wrote the novel at the risk of her family but her mother and her new the story had to be told and the things the people had to go through

For them, the cost of leaving everything behind is less important than not having freedom. Under Trujillo's rule, no one in the Dominican Republic was free. In the period quickly following the death of General Rafael Trujillo, known as "El Jefe," the Dominican Republic was in shambles. The country was under the control of a three-man junta which, with the assistance of the United States, was getting ready for presidential races. In 1963, Juan Emilio Bosch Gaviño was chosen President of the Dominican Republic; that same year, just a couple of months after his initiation, he was removed from the administration by the Dominican military that later settled another three-mean junta in Bosch's place. In 1965, Francisco Alberto Caamaño Deñó drove what was known as the Caamaño Revolt, the opening salvo in the Dominican Civil War.

From the moment that the Dominican republic was free from Trujillo’s dictatorship, contrasting viewpoints have come up regarding the sacrifices of the Mirabal sisters. While some argue that the Mirabal sisters sacrifices were not beneficial and worthwhile to the revolution because it resulted in the orphaning of their children and three young lives were lost. Others argue that the Mirabal sisters sacrifices were effective for the revolution since it changed the future of their country. I deem the sisters sacrifices are justifiable because their sacrifices had an important purpose. Isn’t it true that Trujillo's was absolutely in power for 31 years however, because of the three young sisters his cruel regime ended.

When analyzing a person that took a stand in history, we first have to look at the environment that they were in, and analyze the conditions that created the historical figure and their role in history. One of these figures of historical importance was Fidel Castro with his role in the Cuban Revolution. The Cuban Revolution was an event in history that affected the Cuban people politically, economically, and socially (Perez, 2002). The Cuban Revolution had many key people and nations that were involved in bringing forth the revolution into reality. On one side you had the United States, which was the group responsible for backing Batista and his dictatorship, and the other end of the coin you had the majority of the Cuban people helping the revolutionaries to overthrow Batista’s corrupt government and bring into being, the first communist government in the Western Hemisphere.

In August of 1933 a group of sergeants from the Cuban Military initiated a rebellion against Machado. Surprisingly many workers, students, etc. supported this coup which helped fuel the eventual resignation of Machado in the same year. Batista's rise marked a new era in Cuba, the “Revolutionary period” which would eventually lead to the Cuban revolution.
