In the year of 1630, a group of people known as the Puritans arrived to America and settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in Boston. The Puritans were similar to the Pilgrims in which they were Protestants from England who thought that their reforms of their church were “too Catholic” and needed to be changed further. The Puritans being unhappy with their reforms was the primary reason for leaving England and settling in America, while the Pilgrims stayed behind and were determined to change their reforms. The New England colonies grew in the 1600’s with many of their ways derived from the Puritans. Socially, the importance of education which continues to this day was from the Puritans. The Puritans was a huge deal in the 1600s. It consisted of colonists who were seeking religious tolerance. Puritans were so strict that it was so far fetched from tolerant. One would be punished to not attend church, it was against the law. Men and women were separated through the day long services.

In 1606 British settlers came to the Chesapeake region in search of wealth and a better life; in 1620 Puritan settlers came to the New England region in search of religious freedom and a better life. Both groups had their woes, be them indians, disease, or famine, but eventually began to spread out and colonized. The settlers of the Chesapeake region colonized in the south as a chance to work the land and gain wealth. Both the settlers of New England and Chesapeake settled to search for a better life, beyond what could be offered to them in the old world.

The children in Puritan England must learn how to write and read so that they can be informed about the principles of religion and the capital laws of the country.

The 17th America was a farmland. People were poor and some migrated to this country in the hope of quick wealth. Individuals from England and Europe began to migrate to America. The book gives a detailed account of the first houses, or rather huts which have been built in America.

The First Nations, the Virginians, and the New England Puritans all had a different respect or attitude towards the physical environment in North America. While the First Nations had inhabited the land for already some time, it was a new land for the European colonist. There are many different factors that contributed the three groups’ differing attitudes towards the environment, but it comes down to their purposes or goals in the “New World.” In the long run, these differing attitudes had multiple consequences.

During this period, the colonizers from England felt dissatisfied with the Anglican church being too close to catholicism seeking to purify. They became known as Puritans. The place the most significant within the puritan colony is its prison, where the book begins. The prison doors are rusty, dark, and old, "Like all that pertains to crime" (47). However, next to the decrepit prison door is a rosebush that grew despite the poor conditions that serve as; "hope, to symbolize some sweet moral blossom, that may be found along the track, or relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow" (48).
