This journal, “Of Plymouth Plantation”, which was from Norton Anthology of American Literature, Vol. 1, written by William Bradford between 1630 and 1651, and edited by Samuel Eliot Morison in 1953, describes the story of the pilgrims who sailed from Southampton, England, on the Mayflower and settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620. Those pilgrims were English Christians in the 16th and 17th centuries and religious separatists who saw no hope of reforming the Church of England from within; therefore, they hoped to separate from the Church of England and form independent local churches in another place. Since William Bradford was the leader of those English religious separatists, he experienced the same thing with his separatist members. In order to achieve their dream of building ideal churches, those separatists escaped from the place where they had lived with their friends and family for their whole life to an entire new world where they could possibly accomplish their dream. He must profoundly understand the emotion of those pilgrims. “But that which was most sad and lamentable was, that in two or three months’ time half of their company died, especially in January and February, being the depth of the winter, and wanting houses and other comforts; being infected with the scurvy and other diseases which this long voyage and their inaccommodate condition had brought upon them. So as there died some times two or three of a day in the foresaid time, that of 100 and odd persons, scarce fifty remained.” By this extract in the Of Plymouth Plantation, readers could know the pilgrims’ awful condition taken place and the dangerous environment in Plymouth. Part one consists of chapters one through seven describing the Pilgrim’s voyage to America and the building of their community as well as the formation of a long relationship with the local Pokanokets and their leader, Massasoit. Part two details of new faces coming to the colony from England meaning more mouths to feed, adding to their problems was the threat of the Narragansetts, enemies of the Pokanokets. As a result the men of Plymouth colony constructed an eight foot wall around the settlement. Following the death of Squanto, Standish killed two sachems, Wituwamat and Pecksuot, disrupting the balance of power in the area in favor of the Pokanokets, and after Massasoit recovered from his sickness with the help of Winslow. The Plymouth-Pokanoket alliance was stronger than ever.

As the Spanish empire spread over the southern portion of the present-day United States, the mission was developed to colonial development and to convert the Indians. More importantly the Spanish were there to get gold and other riches. On the other hand French wanted to increase trade. They traded textiles, weapons, and metal goods.
As the Pilgrims arrived, the Pilgrims did not own the land. So Bradford and the Pilgrims signed the Mayflower compact, “a document that claimed ownership of the area... the agreement also set out to guarantee security against dissension (discord or quarreling) with the rest of the passengers... The agreement also provided for a government as well as a new religious society” (Saari and Carnagie 15-16). The Mayflower Compact set the rules for the oncoming people going onto Plymouth.

Being the first two well-known places in which the English would set out to colonize in 1607 and 1620, Jamestown, Virginia and Plymouth, Massachusetts hold very separate set of beliefs, standards, and outlooks on life then and the future to come. While paving the way for things such as slavery, taxes, ownership of land, inclusion of women, tobacco and government assemblies, John Smith and the people of Jamestown became a classical foundation for new life and economic growth for the new world that is, the United States. On the other hand, William Bradford and his people began to realize the intentions of the Church of England were unholy and had strayed away from God’s teachings from the Bible. With this in mind, the Pilgrims set on a voyage to the new world to seek religious freedom. After the Glorious Revolution, in my essay I had informed you about how the colonists were ruled by one person, the English monarch. This English monarch’s power had been reduced by 1689 by an act called the English Bill of Rights, after the monarch’s power had been reduced is when their government had changed into a representative government, like ours today. Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims book report Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims is a book about a time traveling history teacher going on an adventure during the time of the pilgrim’s journey to America and settlement. With the help of his time traveling horse Liberty, Rush Revere experiences firsthand what it was like to travel with the pilgrim’s to the new world, along with two of his students, Tommy and Freedom. They see how much faith the pilgrim’s had in God, and how they were willing to travel to a new land not knowing if they would make it or not just because they wanted religious freedom. They experienced the making and signing of the Mayflower Compact and The building of Plymouth Colony. They got to meet and befriend famous historical figures such as William Bradford, Myles Standish, Samoset, and Squanto, and were invited to the pilgrim’s first Thanksgiving.

Although all the colonists all came from England, the community development, purpose, and societal make-up caused a distinct difference between two distinct societies in New England and the Chesapeake region. The distinctions were obvious, whether it be the volume of religious drive, the need or lack of community, families versus single settlers, the decision on minimal wage, whether or not articles of agreements were drawn for and titles as well as other social matters were drawn, as well as where loyalties lay in leaders. During the colonial period many settlers came to the New World to escape persecution for their Puritan beliefs. Writers such as William Bradford, John Winthrop, Anne Bradstreet, and Mary Rowlandson all shared their experiences and religious devotion throughout their literature that ultimately inspired and influenced settlers to follow. This essay will discuss the similarities in Anne Bradstreet and Mary Rowlandson’s work as they both describe their experiences as signs from God. Anne Bradstreet came to the New World as a devoted Puritan as she repeatedly talked about it in her poetry. In her poems she discusses many tragedies that happened in her life such as; the burning of her house and the death of her two grandchildren all of which she thinks were signs from God.
Frederick Douglass, born a slave and later the most influential African American leader of the 1800s, addresses the hypocrisy of the US of maintaining slavery with its upheld ideals being freedom and independence on July 4th, 1852. Douglass builds his argument by using surprising contrasts, plain facts, and provocative antithesis. Introducing his subject, Douglass reminds his audience about the dark side of America for slaves, in sharp, surprising contrasts with the apparent progressivity within the nation. He first notices “the disparity,” that “the sunlight that brought life and healing to you, has brought stripes and deaths to me,” as an African-American former slave. It is surprising for the audience to hear that the Sun does not bring him any prosperity, that the Sun, the source of life on earth, brings him destruction.
The arrival of the first Europeans in the Americas is dramatically captured through the many writers who attempted to communicate what they saw, experienced and felt. What is more, the very purposes of their treacherous travel and colonization are clearly seen in their writings; whether it is poetry, history or sermons. Of the many literary pieces available today, William Bradford and John Winthrop’s writings, even though vary because the first is a historical account and the second is a sermon, stand out as presenting a clear trust in God, the rules that would govern them and the reason they have arrived in the Americas. First of all, William Bradford provides an in-depth look into the first moment when the Puritans arrived in the Americas. In fact, he chronicles the hardships they face on their way to Plymouth, yet he includes God’s provision every step of the way.
In beginning, this study will compare the captivity narrative of Mary Rowlandson and Mary Jemison. These narratives of Indian captivity in the mid-17th century provide a way to understand the methods that both women employed to survive. The first similarity between these two women is related to their Protestant background, which was a normative part of colonial life in New England during this historical period. In this manner, Rowlandson utilizes the religious tenets of practical religious belief to define her captivity with the Indians: “Life-mercies are heart-affecting-mercies: of great impression and force, and to enlarge pious hearts in praises of God” (Rowlandson 10).
