The Articles of Confederation that was adopted in 1781 provided information about the numerous injustices and events that had led the American colonists to create the document as well as their desire to become independent from Britain. The contract had declared their new self-ruling and centralized government form, however, problems began to arise soon after its initiation. Under the Articles, each state only had one vote in regardless of their size, the government lacked a national army for protection nor could the national government enforce laws and there was no chief executive in charge of the country at the time due to the fear of monarchy. The Articles also resulted in no power to control interstate trade, which allowed states to put …show more content…
During the Constitutional Congress in 1787, 55 nationalist delegates discussed all aspects of the Constitution for months in order to mold it to modern American life and satisfy all or most parties. Among all other compromises that were made during the Convention, the Great Compromise was by far the most essential. The Great Compromise was brought about by the country’s need to determine how representation would be determined. Both the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan proposed promising methods of representation, such as a bi or unicameral legislation and population-based or equal representation respectively. To solve this issue of representation, the Great Compromise utilized ideas from both plans and created a bicameral legislature which included a House of Representatives based on state population and a Senate where two members of each state would represent the state's interests. Although the delegates of the Convention agreed upon scraping the Articles and applying a republican form of government with a chief executive in charge, Northern and Southern politicians disagreed on various points. An issue that caused tension between the North and the South was the issue of slaves counting in the population or not, as the number of representatives in the House of Representatives for each state was based on their overall individual population. The North wanted slaves to only count toward taxes, whereas the South wanted slaves to count only toward their population due to their large prominence in Southern states during this time. To solve this issue, the ⅗ Compromise was enacted, which called for slaves to count as ⅗ of a person for both population and taxes. The North didn’t get much out of
1a. Under the Articles of Confederation, Congress didn’t have the power to tax the colonies so their only option was to request the states for money, which often ended in rejection. Because Congress had so little money to regulate the army/navy and resolve crises, they sold off western lands and printed worthless print money in desperate attempts to do without money. The constitution solves this dilemma by giving Congress the power to make revenue through taxing and borrowing and also the power to appropriate funds.
The Articles of Confederation had many weaknesses as well as positives. From the pros side we have Josh DiGiorgio and Jacob Chrispim. From the cons side we have Grayson Jons and Lexi Rosmarin. We will start with the cons.
Articles of Confederation was the written document that established the functions of the national government of the United States after it declared independence from Great Britain.” The Articles were needed after the United States won war. There was no unity among the country. They used the Articles as their set of rules. There were many important people that had to do with the constitution.
The United States should adopt the Constitution to replace the Articles of Confederation. The new Constitution provides many advantages and new opportunities. First, the Constitution gives more power to the national government in many ways. For example, under the Articles the national government had to ask the states for money, but under the Constitution the government is provided with money and the power to tax. In addition, the Articles allowed states to regulate trade causing each state to tax one another's products.
The constitution of the United States was a document created to fix the major problems the Confederation government had following its creation. The meetings in which the document was created founded the style of government that has lasted to this day. It created the Executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government, it created our bill of rights, and it separated powers between the states and the newly formed federal government. Negotiations started as very difficult between the representatives of the separate states.
The three-fifths compromise reached between delegates from northern and southern states during the Constitutional Convention of 1787. It consisted on that slaves should be counted when determining the state population, for legislative representation and taxing purposes. The compromise was proposed by James Wilson and Roger Sherman.
The two plans allowed congress to have new powers to regulate the national defense and the economy. The only problem was that the Virginia plan wanted the bigger more populous states to have more of a say in the voting while the New Jersey Plan called for each state to have a equal number of votes. The delegates form each state finally agreed to send one person from each state to a grand committee which then they would vote and decide the issue at hand. On July, 1787 the grand committee approved what is called the Connecticut Compromise. This Compromise gave each state the same number of votes in the upper house but made the votes in the lower house matter on the population of a states.
The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution since the United States of America was formed. This constitution wasn’t helping the states and was causing many arguments between them. After Shay’s Rebellion, when the farmers got mad about having high taxes and heavy debts, even though Shay’s Rebellion didn’t succeed it proved that something has to be done to the Articles of Confederation. What do you think the conclusion will be after the states do something about the Articles of Confederation? The Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan helped create the constitution.
I am Jonathan Dayton, hailing from New Jersey, and I am a Federalist. I am here today at the Constitutional Convention to discuss the pros and cons of the our nation’s governing documents. I will be speaking in favor of a constitution rather than articles of confederation. Speaking as a Federalist, I see some flaws in the Articles of the Confederation. One feature of the Articles of Confederation is that the power of voting would be in the hands of the people.
In return, the free states argued that if slaves are considered property, then they should not be counted for in a state’s population and if they are accounted for then they are considered individuals, not property. Upon hearing this, slave states said they would not approve the ratification of the Constitution unless their slaves were counted for in the House of Representatives. A compromise was then made, and it was called the 3/5 Compromise. As a result, only 3/5 of the slave population in these slaves' states were counted for in
The main reason for these compromises was due to all the different theories and opinions pertaining to forming the nation. Disputes between the southern states and the northern states were the most fierce because of their opposing views on slavery. Also, conflict arose over the difference in power between larger states, such as Virginia, New York, and North Carolina, and smaller states, such as Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. “The Great Compromise” was an agreement that both large and small states reached which introduced a bicameral legislature into the federal government. The House of Representatives and the Senate would both share power inside the legislative branch which in turn gave every state a set number of two senators and a varying number of representatives based on population.
After the countless debates, the Great Compromise was what the convention would come into agreement with representation by population in the House of Representatives “The number of Representatives shall not exceed one for every thirty thousand, but each state shall have at least one Representative. ”(add footnote) The smaller states were pleased with equal representation in the Senate “The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senates from each state and each Senator shall have one vote.”(add
This was because they new the benefit to having votes on their side. The compromise that resolved this conflict was the Three-Fifths Compromise. it was known as this because the result was that every slave vote would count as three-fifths the value of any normal citizens vote. This pleased both the southern and northern states as it would be less likely for slave votes to swing an election.
The Articles of Confederation was an agreement among the thirteen original states of the United States that served as the first constitution. The Articles had first been introduced by Richard Henry Lee in the Second Continental Congress. Although the Articles of Confederation has made its contributions throughout history, the Articles, however, did not last very long and had been proven inadequate from the very start. I agree with this statement based on the examples and analysis of the Constitution I will soon provide. The Articles of Confederation were written during a time when the American people feared a strong national government.
The Articles of the Confederation was the first government constitution that the United States used, and, although there were strength like the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, there were major weaknesses of the Articles of the Confederation like the following: requiring 9 out of the 13 colonial votes from the representatives from different states to pass a law; having no executive and judicial branch; and the federal government being unable to impose tax revenue onto the states. Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.
