I am writing in support of Stephanie McGuire-Wise for the ACES Supervision Award. Mrs. McGuire-Wise is my clinical supervisor at The University of Toledo’s Counseling Center. She is an excellent clinical supervisor and a kind, generous person who is devoted to her clients and supervisees. In supervision, Mrs. McGuire-Wise always provides useful feedback regarding my counseling skills, challenges me to accurately perceive the thoughts, feelings, and goals of my clients and myself; and is open to my input and feedback about the counseling sessions. She is very collaborative during the supervision process and this helps me to identify themes and patterns for my clients, create and implement appropriate goals for my clients, and apply interventions and techniques to help my client achieve their goals.

I chose mental health counseling as a profession due to personal experiences in my life. Choosing to become a professional counselor is not only a personal commitment to me, but to others, and to society as a whole. As a survivor of domestic violence, I felt a strong desire and need to make a difference in lives of many suffering from: personal issues like anger management, depression, suicidal thoughts, aging, parenting, self-image, relational problems, stress, addiction, and women involved with domestic violence. My goal would be to provide the proper assessment and diagnosis to provide necessary treatment such as: psychotherapy, substance abuse treatment, and crisis management.
Like other professions in the mental health field and helping professions, counseling typically attracts those who are imbued with a need to help others, to make a difference in others’ lives, the community around them and sometimes even the world. There are many facets to a counselor and to counseling, some of which take on personal attributes such as personality, the values and beliefs held by counselors, and what they perceive their role in the counseling profession to be. Other facets involve ethical considerations in therapy, the importance of the profession, the value and process of change, important counseling practices and the value of necessary self-care a counselor ought to engage in. The role of a counselor is to act as a conduit to change and wellbeing in a client.
As I did more research I found that “Clinical counselors are concerned with the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders. They predominantly help people deal with personal issues, such as divorce or the death of a loved one.” ( Dr. Barbara LoFrisco 2009). Once I learned that they handle more than just clients with mental
Additionally, as a counselor, it is important to be genuine with whatever feedbacks one presents to the patient and what one believes regarding the situation of the client. Mrs. Perez believes the more authentic and genuine he is with her patients, the more help he will be able to offer the clients. As a counselor, it is important to have a fine and professional interaction with one 's client but boundaries must be maintained. Through this, a counselor is able to demonstrate their focus on helping the patients by showing the client that they understand their problems. It also through such engagements that counselor is able to use the non-judgmental attention that does not require words for illustration in helping the patient.
Counseling has evolved into a broader scope since 2000. It now encompasses a systematic helping process based on the principle of psychology used by the professional counselor to help clients in handling their development and challenges in modern living. Counseling includes crisis intervention, marriage and family counseling, relationship counseling, career counseling, rehabilitation counseling, mental health counseling, sexual trauma counseling, AIDS counseling, philosophical counseling, grief and bereavement counseling, substance abuse counseling, transgender counseling and others. All counselor approaches have something to offer when used by a trained counselor some theoretical approaches work better than others depending on individual needs.
Over the past one and half month, the class of PDE 502 (Counselling and Career Education) has taught me some major lessons for life in dealing with the clients in response to their emotional needs. The role of a counsellor is not unlike that of a friend where by it is nurtured by being in each other’s company, talking over everyday issues and sharing feelings. However, what sets a counsellor apart is their experience and the ability to apply counselling theories and techniques to assist people in gaining awareness, insight and explore ways of solving their own issues.
Counselling skills are initiated in order to help the person to talk, making sense of their situation, developing these ideas about what the counsellor can do, and out these ideas into action. Individuals think, feel and react in different ways. By integrating different ways of helping people bring change in their lives, a counsellor can work with each client to produce a unique therapy adapted to suit what that client wants, and
